View Full Version : Red Leather Second Thoughts?

Hi,

I've been waiting so long for my car (since March) that now i'm starting to doubt my choices. I know i liked it when i saw it, but i wonder what effect the passage of time will have.

Do any of you wish that you had not chosen the red/black leather and gone with something more subtle instead?

Thanks for your views.

I'm hoping santa will bring my car for Christmas, but there now seems a good chance that little jonny won't be getting a present this year.

Hell no! :)

The red and black *sold* me on this car. Even my non-believing friends had to admit that the 2tone interior looks really good.

Hope that you can get your car for the holidays! :)

Thanks Psylence!

I have not told my friends what colour car/interior i'm getting (for surprise factor) but when some have seen the red/black in my brochures they have said 'i hope you are not getting that!'

I get what i like, i'm not really bothered what anyone else likes, just don't want to regret it down the line.

I was tempted by the red / balck combo when I was pre-ordering Goose but was told by others that it would make me look like a pimp!:D

Goose
10-15-2003, 05:42 AM
Pimp!

I reasonably confident that i shall feel like a Superstar! At least for a while, maybe down the line i'll feel like a pimp, that's what i'm wondering about.

At least with 4 seats i can get all my bitches in there!

I think the red and black combo is a little "in your face". Glad a ordered just black. But then again I didn't have a choice with Titianium did i?

I also had some second thoughts between the time I preordered and picked up my car...but once I got my 8 and saw the red/black in person I didn't regret it at all! It's gorgeous combination. They got the mix just right -- not too much red.

I saw a Mercedes SLK230 the other day that was silver with a red & black interior, the red was WAY overdone...in addition to red on the seats & steering wheel, the entire center console and shift boot were also red leather. It was horrible!

Goose, it's a great combination. One of the first colors at my dealer was your exact color combination, and I almost bought it right then instead of waiting for my green/tan. I also saw jtimbck2's titanium with the red recently, and it looked just as nice. The red leather is REALLY amazing looking.

I love it. Plus, living in GA the UGA fans go nuts over it.

I love the red and black, seen at the dealers lot and wished I could have it. I think the car is so distinctive, why not make it stand out more. However the 2 tone interior was not available with winning blue and as my wife hates leather interiors, I pretty much have to like cloth.

I love it! Shock & awe factor is still off the charts. I think the red is deep/rich in hue & blended with the black enough to not insult the eyes. It only adds to the looks.

That, & it matches the lipstick & mini's of my ho's perfectly! :o

I loved the red and black. If they had offered it on the Winning Blue, I'd have gotten it. My Corvette has a very similar red/black interior and it looks GREAT! Chevrolet has offered it as an option on all of the Z06's.

Thanks for the response, i feel much better!

I know it looks tasty, and am very pleased to see that nobody (yet) has had second thoughts!

It's a double edged sword anyway with the leather, i test drove a car with black leather and thought the interior was a little dour and gloomy. It's all or nothing, no middle ground, i can see what you mean Andy with 'in your face', but i think the car pulls it off well.

I just hope that i feel the same way a few months (years?) down the line.

I absolutely love mine, and so do my car's fans. However, I will warn you of this. You have to clean the driver's seat OFTEN. I say this, because I only have passengers a couple of times a week, whereas I drive it all the time. So, my seat gets more use and gets dirty quick. You can see a darkness in the leather grain that the other seats don't have. A quick cleaning fixes it right up, though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the textured side bolsters vinyl instead of leather? Either way does it get hot in hot weather and do you get arm or leg patterns on your skin after sitting for a while? Thanks.

I love the black/red interior. I was a bit skeptical before I saw it, but once I saw it I absolutely loved it. The red is a nice tone and thoughtfully placed so it really doesn't look all that flashy, rather just adds a bit of character IMO.

I was not sure either if I'd think it was too much.....but the more I look at it the more I like it. Two tone stands out and really makes the car look cool and unique. Hmmmmmm...if they had red and blue leather........Go Cubs!!! Just kidding on the red/blue.

The side bolsters ARE indeed something other than leather, but they look and feel nice in my opinion -- they are functional. I did not find the seats to be hot at all this summer, even when opening the doors to 130+ in-cabin air temps. As for leg patterns: I don't think this would be an issue unless you drive naked. Most of the contact area is leather surface. In order to make lines, you'd have to drive naked, with your legs spread open. Now who really drives like that? Maybe I shouldn't ask...

Absolutely not. I, too, was afraid of the "pimp effect" with red and black, but when you see it person it totally does not give that impression. it is just hot, and looks way cool. As far as I'm concerned, the Red '8 with red/black leather is the flagship of the fleet. It is that to which all others aspire! (jk, I know each of you love your respective colors, strictly one man's opinion.) It looks awesome and does need quick cleaning every weekend.

Red/ black combination has been described in the British press as 'tacky' but I have not seen it. Some pictures suggest the worst.

All I know is that I have the red/blk in a red 8. Makes me feel like I am in a show car every time I get in it.

Of course, I like to dress in pink and red silk, with tiger print accents toped with a large velvet fedora!

I've already posted here that I love this interior. It's what I have too. I passed-up a first allotment car (V. Red with just black interior) & waited for the red/black. I insisted.

Yeah, I was told that the exact car that I wanted was already ordered & coming in the first allotment. I was doing the paper signing thing when my salesguy came in the office & said he was mis-informed, that it had black leather, not red/black. I was so pissed, I know one thing that was red - my face! I was about to walk cuz I was so pissed, then he found out that one with red/black was coming around the end of August, so I signed for that one & that's the one I have. (It came real early - Aug. 6th.)

I understand the concern that the red/black interior might wear thin after a while. I really liked mine, as did about half of those who saw it. Half also didn't care for it at all. I found the artistic (right brained) people really loved it while lawyers/accountants (left brained) people didn't care for it.

I must admit that after the 2nd month of ownership I was a little less pleased with the red/black as it seemed gimmicky and a tad in your face. I think a good black/grey two-tone might have looked better to me.............Notice I said to ME.

I would really like to see Mazda make available a blue/black leather interior for the winning blue cars. I saw such a combination on a BMW Z3 and it really looked great! Currently I'm trying to decide if I should get a V.Red with Red/Black interior or a Winning Blue with Black interior. If Mazda made a blue/black for the Winnig Blue then it would be no contest...I'd get the blue in a heartbeat.

I have no objections to the red & black interior. I also think the tan & black is cool. However, to save a little money and a lot of weight, and generally because I prefer a simpler car with less gadgets, I opted for the Sport Package, and I must say the cloth is very nice. It's gray on black and I don't slide around, and it looks durable and easy to clean. However, I have had the car for only a week so i can't say for sure.

the reason i choose all black is more on the particla side, as the red beinga lighter color it get dirty over time.

I was a little hesitant to get the velocity red with red/black interior, but I am extremely happy that I did. It just works well with the red exterior. Plus, I didn't want black because I was afraid the seats would get too hot, and so far, I've had no problems with the red becoming too hot.

And a lot of my friends didn't like the idea of a red/black interior, but when they saw it, they were converted.

Along those lines, I am also disappointed that the yellow does not have a black/yellow interior option. I've seen pics of it which may have been pre-production (or JP market?). This is exactly what the yellow car needs, imo. I suppose if someone doesn't care for red 2-tone, the yellow 2-tone would make 'em scream :)

If the yellow was available I'd probably go for that. As it is I'm leaning towards the titanium with black/chaparral interior. After 13 years in my Miata I am tiring of the all-black interior.

If I had the means I'd seriously consider a repaint in cream-white and an all-red interior.

Another color I'm in love with was one I had on my first new car, 1984 Renault, which came in "Jade Mist". Never saw another one, so I guess I got odd taste. But that color, with white leather interior would be insane.

Jade Mist - as close as I could get with Photoshop and from memory:

In Canada you have 3 interior options: black and taupe, black and black and black and red.

Unfortunately the color of the exterior determines your interior insert color.

I've seen them all, and I like them all about the same. From the brochure I thought the red on black was a bit much, but in person it's fine.

I had to go red + black when I decided on the Velocity Red exterior. No complaints from anyone yet ;)

I have the red/black leather with silver. I went out of my way to get this exact combination. The reason is nostolgic: my first RX-7 was silver with black cloth with red highlight. But even more important is that when I met my wife, she was splitting with her Ex and she still owned a 1978 silver Ferrari 308GTS with red/black leather interior. What a fine car that was.

And what a fine car the RX-8 is! :D

dude , i hope you get your present regardless of colour ! but the red/black sold me. it was a deal-breaker if i couldn't get the red/black...

my only regret is not getting more red accents!!!

I have owned 12 cars - 6 black interiors, 1 red, 1 gray, and 4 tan. I never got tired of the tan/sand/beige. The last 4 cars were this color and I would have gone with a tan interior of sorts if available. The one interior I will never choose again is gray. I got sick of it in less than 6 months and it starts to look dirty. The all red interior wore on me too. I never even considered the 2 tone interior in the 8 until AFTER I bought mine and saw a Titanium with brown/black - nice combination. The red is nice too on a black car and I guess the red too. Still, I wish the blue had a tan option. That would look good.

Kevin,
The red & black interior looks great with your black RX-8. It is much more subdued than the same interior on my Velocity Red. With my car it screams at you a little more. I wanted my car to look a little outrageous and it fits the bill perfectly. :D

I thought about the red and black but only for a second. It really depends on your personality and tastes. I myself wanted something mroe conservative looking and less flashy, so I went with sunlight silver and all black interior.
But if you want to be a little more loud and get a little more attention (as if this car needs more attention) the red/black combined with a louder color is the way to go.
