View Full Version : Broken Visor
Rx8Manuel 06-19-2007, 10:16 AM WOW! well it sounds like this is a common break fix issue and mine just broke yesterday and my 8 only have 8K mikes. I will be checking this up with my dealership this weekend and get it fix. Hopefully they have some in stock!
eHart 06-20-2007, 02:24 PM brother borrowed mine, visor's broke... warranty here i come
dizzysyd 06-21-2007, 11:10 PM Mine broke before I even got the car off the lot. :)
Dealer was installing the license plate on the back of the car while I was sitting in the driver's seat, getting ready to drive away in my new car (06...purchased 2/14/07)... I noticed that the sunvisor wasn't going all the way up. I asked the salesman about it and he took it off to try to fix it...Causing the wires to touch and blow the fuse in the stereo.
All before I drove off the lot.
My "first night" with my new car was actually with a loaner.
They fixed it the next morning. That was February. A couple of weeks ago, I was waiting in line at a drive through...Checked the mirror, gently put the visor up, then heard a loud POP, and the thing flopped down and almost smacked me in the face.
I had to drive to work "looking cool" while holding the damn visor out of my face.
The next day, I called the dealer. The girl in service said that there were a ton of cars ahead of me, but bring it up there. They worked me in same day (giving me shuttle service back to work, then back to the dealer after work). She said that they keep a lot of them in stock, since they break so much.:icon_no2:
Boomer01 07-09-2007, 09:41 PM wow! i didnt know this visor issue was so common! this morning mine broke on the way to work. :banghead: i only have 19k on my car and its an 04. i hope the dealer will cover mine as they have many others on here!
redcivic 07-10-2007, 11:24 AM First dealer I went to wouldn't replace it and I have had many replaced by another dealer since back then.
maskedferret 07-10-2007, 11:56 AM Just had my passenger side sun visor replaced a few days ago. My car is a Feb06 build that I purchased new in November, and a month after purchase I had the driver side one replaced. To those of you that only had one replaced so far, I am willing to bet that the other hasn't failed yet because it simply hasn't been used much (as was my case). My new driver side one seems much sturdier now than the passenger side one was before it broke. I would recommend trying to wear the other one in more to see if it breaks (open/close it often) -- especially if you're near warranty expiration.
Racer516 07-10-2007, 12:20 PM I just joined the broken visor club and have since found out how common it is. Here comes the first warranty work.
coolstorm92 07-15-2007, 09:48 PM another one bites the dust. let wife use car. visor is now broken.
Atilla 07-15-2007, 09:54 PM guess i wasn't alone - within my first week of having my 8 the visor broke - evidently it's a common issue - just take it back to the dealership - it's covered under warranty
sleeperx8 07-15-2007, 11:26 PM i've already replaced 3... i think it's almost time to replace the passenger side again... while i'm still in my 50k warranty
GatorShinka 07-17-2007, 09:02 PM Mine broke when I'd had the car about two months (but I bought a leftover '06). As others have stated, be careful with the wires or you'll blow the fuse--which means no radio, no smart key or power locks, no interior/trunk lights and the CEL will come on.
RX-8Newb 07-26-2007, 12:07 PM Just went to mazda of roswell today in ATL, GA. They told me my car was under warranty i would not have to worry about it. The same thing that happened to the prerson who started this post back in 03 happened to me but i never used it and it stayed in the up position so i never worried about it. Did not know if it was covered so i just said to hell with it. Then it started falling down and i had to damn near punch it in place to keep it up. So i figured it was time to go to the dealer. Glad i did it should be replaced along with hopefully a grinding tranny next week.
Eddie13 07-30-2007, 09:29 AM Spent this past weekend at the Ritz Carlton in Naples and when the Valet brought my car around after I checked out it was covered in bird shit and also found my driver's side visor broken too!:banghead:
When I pointed out the 4 pounds of bird feces all over my car he offered to clean it for me - at that point I just wanted my keys and my car in order to avoid any more accidents.:nono:
I feel sorry for the other guests who had Mercedes 550's, Porsche Carrera GT's, Aston Martin's etc...
Needless to say the dealership is replacing the visor this saturday along with a recall concerning the fuel cap and a reprogramming of the computer.
pdxhak 07-30-2007, 10:30 AM Going in again for another broken visor. Not sure if this is the 2nd or 3rd driver side. The passenger side has been replaced once. This time it will be replaced under the TSB so hopefully this resolves the issue.
Has anyone here had a broken visor since the TSB came out?
legendkurado 07-30-2007, 11:55 AM cracked down the middle and got it replaced on warranty
New Yorker 07-30-2007, 03:21 PM Going in again for another broken visor. Not sure if this is the 2nd or 3rd driver side. The passenger side has been replaced once. This time it will be replaced under the TSB so hopefully this resolves the issue.
Has anyone here had a broken visor since the TSB came out?Pretty sure your new visor will be fine. TSB says it was re-designed just to address this problem.
MazdaJeff 07-30-2007, 04:07 PM I just joined the club. First time lowering it.
Car has about 700 miles on it.
CostasX8 08-05-2007, 08:37 AM Just broke mine today:( I believe that it broke because i left the windows closed for the first time.Too much heat!!!
Hotsauce 08-06-2007, 02:49 PM My driver's side visor cracked two weeks ago. I used Gorilla glue and a clamp to repair it. I'm waiting for the passenger side to crack before taking it to the dealer. I'll probably won't have to wait to long, the temps here will be in the 100s for the remaining week.

Mine is going in tomorrow to have both replaced even though only the driver side is broke.
B-Ron 08-07-2007, 02:01 AM Well mine broke a few months ago, thought it was one of my friends who broke it on one of our snowboard trips and was just being an ass and not telling me. Good to hear though that its just Mazda being shitty again. Sucks to be me however cause my warrantys up(im at 58k miles) and just took the car in today cause im hearing grinding in the transmission! YAY!!!!...... :(
I had both sides replaced at two different times. The service manager at Toms River Mazda (NJ) is great. They were replaced with no questions. He also replaced the console cover. And I think I may have used the visors twice before breaking. Great design!
Foz'sRX8 08-13-2007, 01:44 PM Joined the club yesterday!
I've got 57k on my '04 GT..........well, you ain't gonna believe this s___t!
I called my local dealer (Mazda of Wesley Chapel) that just opened about 6 months ago...and they said they would take care of it!
Unbelievable!!! Out of warranty and didn't buy it from them, yet they still said they would fix it no charge.
Now That's what I'm talkin' about!
SE3PSynergy 08-13-2007, 02:02 PM omg... I seriously thought I was the only one who had a broken visor since I never come into this section... WOW. Definitely bringing it in to the dealer soon hahahaha.
Mazurfer 08-13-2007, 02:05 PM :lol2: Yeah..............welcome to the club! Actually there is a TSB on this and while I didn't read this whole thread this time, I don't thinnk I've read a case where they didn't replace it...even out of warranty. Caution..............I could be wrong.
Rems31 08-14-2007, 08:27 PM glad I could join you folks today. I was taking off the sun shade for the front windshield. pushed the visor back up and SNAP! Waiting for the dealership to get a replacement
Mazurfer 08-15-2007, 03:52 PM glad I could join you folks today. I was taking off the sun shade for the front windshield. pushed the visor back up and SNAP! Waiting for the dealership to get a replacement
Bingo! Mine happened a year ago doing that same thing. I'll bet you feel any resistance what-so-ever now................you will STOP immediately. I'm so paranoid everytime I get in the car now. :lol2:
MyShinka 08-15-2007, 04:24 PM Mine cracked two weeks ago & I got in covered under warranty. Took 2 days for the dealer to get it in stock.
New Yorker 08-15-2007, 04:52 PM Another broken visor post? Sheesh, I can save newcomers a lot of time: the original visors weren't designed well. Some broke, some didn't. The broken ones were replaced. Some broke again, some didn't. The visors were recently re-designed so they don't break anymore.
(Doesn't that beat reading 278 posts?)
Rems31 08-16-2007, 11:04 AM Oh yeah I knew it was gonna break...I was just waiting...
Rhino8487 08-23-2007, 01:20 PM I live in Las Vegas, and I have had both visors swapped every 7 to 8 months until the warranty was up. The visors are $145 a piece here. The dealer said there is nothing that can be done, but replace them as they break. He also said there is no Mazda cloth visor to replace the plastic ones with. Right now I'm looking into stereo shops that replace factory visors with ones with TV screens. I'm hoping I can find a suitable replacement without a tv screen. If I find a replacement, I will be sure to post.
Huhwha 08-23-2007, 03:02 PM Mine are getting replaced tomorrow. They took almost 3 years to break, so we'll see how it goes.
adambl03 08-23-2007, 03:52 PM Have had it happen twice on my '06...fixed both times under warranty...but still a pain in the butt...
Keyten 08-24-2007, 02:19 AM I guess I'll throw in my story as well.
I bought my 06 used with 4k miles on it. The only thing wrong with the car was that the driver's side visor was broken where the rod actually clipped into the visor. Anyways, I sort of brushed it off and eventually after a couple weeks, when I hit a bump, it would fall down and get in my way.
That night I decided to take it off and try and get it replaced the next day at the dealer. I tried to just simply take it off but come to find out, it has two power wires running to the light in it, makes sense. So I decided to continue with taking it off just unclip the power wires from the light. Everything went fine and I got the visor off. After that though, the wires were hanging down so I went to wrap them around the rod that was holding the visor on and I crossed the ground and power. Not too good. I didn't know it at the time but I blew a fuse and the radio wouldn't work, the locks had to be done manually, and a few of the interior lights wouldn't work.
I was rather upset by that time so I called up the dealer bright and early and headed on in. Of course I just played the "It just stopped working" angle. Turns out they fixed it in under an hour and I was on my way.
He||hammer 08-24-2007, 08:16 AM Got both of mine replaced yesterday, went to the car after work on wed went to put them up and they just fell back down, they were both split right down the middle
cnaude 08-24-2007, 01:44 PM I have officially joined the broken visor club. :(
My driver side visor broke this afternoon when I was out for lunch. I looked at the passenger side and it's also starting to split. Getting it fixed tomorrow under warranty.
Rems31 08-30-2007, 02:25 PM Man seems like if I don't call the dealer, they won't call me. I called today to ask if the visor was there. They said their system didn't show it came. But then the guy put me on hold and checked their stock and it 'came in today'. Same thing happened when I went in for the brake squeal. I just happen to check up on the status of it the same day the shipment arrived...hmmmm....
anyways getting my driver's side visor replaced this saturday...
nis270r 08-30-2007, 02:54 PM [QUOTE=New Yorker;2016025]Another broken visor post? Sheesh, I can save newcomers a lot of time: the original visors weren't designed well. Some broke, some didn't. Yah mine broke twice, one last year, and one recently, both happened during summer time, i think it's the cheap glue that they used which can't withstand the heat, especially if you parked your car outdoor for long period of time, i put my hand around the visor, and feel like there's glue melted around the opening, and i'm kinda pissed that dealer doesn't stock these if they know this is a common problem, i have to make appointment and wait for the parts to come in and get installed, waste of time !! what can you do, i luv my car but these stupid problem pissed me off.....
thelafleurs 09-06-2007, 07:19 PM I believe the visors have a design flaw. Ours came apart exposing the made in China look or post WWII Japan products. Haven't had an engine replaced yet ( 05 with MT and ~17Kmi). Take special pains to warm it up and invoke shut down procedure ( hold at 3krpms and kill engine). Just love that car. We rented a Chrysler Crossfire in Fort Lauderdale for the drive to Key West. Can't touch the RX-8, with the exception of the visors,
Buzz'n 09-10-2007, 08:52 PM Well I joined the visor club today as well. It seems like there are many of us in here! Does anyone know if there was an official recall on these? I have 54K :( I am pretty sure my dealership won't cover. I had to pull teeth just to get my 50k service done!
SAMSONN 09-11-2007, 12:59 PM Hey all, i have an 04 model rx8 and my visor broke, drivers side, so i tried taking it off because it was annoying me. I accidentally touched the red and black wires together and I lost my audio and my gages started freaking out and also the power locks stopped working, it was an easy fix, if you guys happen to make this same mistake you will blow whats called the "room" fuse. In the o4 model it's in the inside fuse box not the one under the hood last fuse at the bottom, this fuse is also listed in the manual if your unsure how to locate it.
peace
Spinning Sushi 09-13-2007, 12:46 AM I finally got my passenger sun visor replaced today. I'm so happy... it still even have the part number sticker on it!
crewshell 09-16-2007, 07:46 AM My Visor Broke... I have a late 04... wonder if its still covered... I'll call tomorrow. Rear passanger tail light fogs up too. Ug. problems ;)
SAMSONN 09-16-2007, 08:35 AM I fixed my tail lights with some silicon around the gasket, just take the tail light off and seal the gasket, i read somwhere in this thread someone was saying to put a hole in the bottom corner of the tail light, this is unecessary the condensation will dissappear in a couple days on its own.
solo8 09-27-2007, 08:11 PM Both my visors need to be replaced ('06, 18,000 mi.). It sure doesn't sound like they've revised the part from what I'm reading. So many recent replacements breaking again. Or is Mazda just unloading all the old stock?
I hope I get an improved version.
BigRed 09-27-2007, 10:10 PM the first day I had my car I broke the visors :). I got them fixed, and havent used them since! lol
Charles Cope 09-28-2007, 05:54 AM Both my visors need to be replaced ('06, 18,000 mi.). It sure doesn't sound like they've revised the part from what I'm reading. So many recent replacements breaking again. Or is Mazda just unloading all the old stock?
I hope I get an improved version.
I just got a replacement for the replacement of May 2006 (04' 38,000 mi.). This visor has much less detent than the original and replacement #1. Looking at the way they blow apart, it makes sense that the reduced detent should help.
My warrenty (48 months) ran out exactly 30 days before the second visor popped. I asked my service director if they were planning on replacing it for free and he said he would check on it. The official response was that the Mazda representative said that they would not replace the visor a second time. I asked for the Mazda rep's contact information so I could pursue it further and told the service director that I did not hold him responsible, but that this is a safety issue and Mazda should recall ALL of them!
When I visited the dealer to have a previously ordered part installed, I was informed that the dealer would cover the second replacement. If any of you are getting resistance, I suggest you play the safety card. Its surprising that having the visor flapping in your face or going without, during a clear sunny afternoon hasn't caused any accidents!
New Yorker 09-28-2007, 09:21 AM It sure doesn't sound like they've revised the part from what I'm reading. So many recent replacements breaking again. Or is Mazda just unloading all the old stock?
I hope I get an improved version. According to the Mazda TSB, the part WAS "modified" after July 7, 2006:
Old part numbers:
Passenger side = FE01-69-270E-77
Drivers side = FE 01-69-320E-77
New part numbers:
Passenger side = FE 88-69-270-77
Drivers side = FE 88-69-320-77
GameGuy369 10-02-2007, 06:27 PM Add me in as a victim. I feel like I'm part of the RX-8 community for sure now :)
loco4rx8 10-11-2007, 08:44 AM My driver side visor just broke yesterday. It took 88,000 miles and three years to break. I hope the replacement lasts as long since I'll have to pay for this.
I had to just take it off and throw it in the trunk because it kept falling down in my face. I guess I better give the dealer a call so they can get the part in. I'll just wait until my next oil change to get it fixed. I'm afraid to look at the passenger one! It's hardly ever used, so hopefully it'll hang in there.
Rems31 10-11-2007, 08:54 AM I used duct tape to close the split. It held up pretty nicely.
Revvittupp 10-11-2007, 12:15 PM I read page 1 then 10 and 11, so I'm not sure this was answered... but... Are peopel still curious why there are holes in it? Have you seen how low our windshield is? The salesman was not being a smartass when saying "so you can see through them". That IS why they have holes in them. They were pointed out that way by the product guy during the rotary Roadshow. If I'm not mistaken, we're going back 4 years here, it was mandated that they be made that way due to the height of the windshield. I remember hearing "To get the lines and curviness that we were looking for, some sacrifices had to be made..."
Rems31 10-11-2007, 01:15 PM This thread started in 2003 so I'm pretty sure that question has been answered...in fact i believe I read about it in the "little things" thread.
solo8 10-12-2007, 08:17 AM Dealer replaced my driver's side. They apparently keep those in stock, but they aren't used to the passenger side breaking (probably because they get less use), so they had to order that.
The previous owner probably flipped them both down when parking in the sun. That's what I usually do.
beachdog 12-17-2007, 09:01 PM My driver's side broke last week. Exactly 3 days after the 4th anniversary of taking new delivery. I have to call the dealer and see if they will take care of it under warranty. In four years, that might have been the 10th time that I ever used the visor and it's the first interior piece I've ever had a problem with.
Charles Cope 12-18-2007, 05:41 AM If the dealer doesn't want to replace it for free, ask them to check with Mazda. Mention that its a safety hazard and that it should have been a full-fledged recall. When I did this, last spring, my dealer told me that Mazda would not pay for it. I asked for the name of the Mazda rep that told them this so I could contact him directly. The dealer caved and I got my visor for free.
If your visor is as floppy as mine was, you either take it off or hold it up while you're driving. That's a safety hazard! Also, they rarely have them in stock, so you have to wait a week or more before it will be replaced! Good luck!
Both of mine broke and were replaced by the dealer. The passenger side broke the second time it was used. I jokingly yelled at my wife for using it to block the sun. How dare we actually need to use our visors. Actually I've never owned a new car with so many problems. 2 visors. 2 tail lights (condensation) 1 headlight (condensation). Why can't they just make stuff that works? Yeah, I'm getting a little pissed off. Sorry
beachdog 12-18-2007, 08:04 PM Took it to the dealer today and they replaced the driver side visor.
They wanted to be stupid about it and charge me for being 1 week out of warranty. I pushed back at that and then they wanted me to pay for the 15k service ($110 dollars for a long list of services that consist of nothing more than looking at stuff I know is perfectly fine. I pushed back on that they sent out the service manager. He said that he needed Mazda's permission to perform the work one week out of warranty and would have to call them. I said fine and proceeded to pull out my cell phone and ask for the phone number. I said that I'd love to talk to Mazda and remind them that they have had a TSB out on this defective part for 4 years and that when it fell down in front of my face after hitting a dip in the road I almost hit a pedestrian and that I'd follow up this call with a call to the NTSB and DOT... He told me to put the phone away and proceeded to write it up as a warranty repair.
I always wonder if the service writers actually believe that all the customers are total idiots or they are just bored and want to entertain themselves by pissing off people who are already annoyed that they have to get their car fixed.
dgriff1 12-24-2007, 11:46 AM My visor broke recently and I have been putting off replacing it until I have to get an oil change. It was generally staying upright.
Unfortunately the visor finished breaking the other night, I got in my car and started it and was trying to get the visor to stay up when all of a sudden I blew something and then the radio and stuff was off and I got a CEL. I have an appointment to drop the car off wed. and they will fix it all under warranty.
zerobio 02-07-2008, 10:10 AM Old thread but ...
I have an 07 BB with the sand leather and was thinking about ordering black visors as a small (but expensive!) interior mod if they were available. But after reading all this about broken visors, I don't know if they would be worth it. I still think it would look good, though.
pcorsaro 05-05-2008, 08:14 PM Both broke under warentee.
After warrenty one broke (was extreemly careful and still broke).
Placed a screw & nut to hold together (seems to work)
The dealer said that they break easy (bad design)
I am looking for a non-mazda after market replacement, no luck so far.
Paul
MX6_2_RX8 06-02-2008, 07:43 AM Joined the broken visor club. Great to have this site to find out that it is covered by warranty.
To be named later 06-02-2008, 06:32 PM Broken at 81,000 miles a couple days ago, and damn that %$#@ was SHREDDED inside.
YeahYeahYouWere 06-09-2008, 03:50 PM Well, it's eleventeen gajillion million degrees here (it was about 55 a week ago), so add me to the list of people who have broken this thing. Agree with above poster, it looks pretty nasty in there.
I'm not particularly upsat that it broke, I mean, crap happens. What bothers me is that my SOB Mazda dealer has NO time for me for 3 days yet. Normally this isn't a big deal but I have to drive out there (thank goodness it's close and won't cost me $20 in gas to get there), have them look inside and say "Gee, that IS broke" and decide they have to order me a new one, which I will then have to WAIT for and GO BACK to the dealership for.
In the meantime I guess I would just take it off...
Socket7 06-09-2008, 04:22 PM Mine is beginning to split as well. I'm pondering just slathering some epoxy on it right now before it gets bad.
YeahYeahYouWere 06-12-2008, 02:29 PM They actually had a visor in stock at my dealer, so I was there for all of like 10 minutes and I don't have to go back now.
It was repaired under warranty as well, so that was a bonus.
Socket7 - as for slapping some epoxy on there, could you do it and make sure that you didn't wind up gluing it stiff? Seems to me like epoxying might cause it to stick. Just a thought.
rovic 06-12-2008, 02:54 PM Mine just broke, but I'm past my warranty. kinda sux.
chiketkd 07-18-2008, 12:38 PM My driver's side visor broke yesterday on my drive home and I'm noticing a crack on the passenger side visor as well (right along the same seam where the driver's side broke). My car is still well within the factory warranty.
Took her to my local dealership today - the Service Manager looked over the issue, wrote up the order and I'll get two new visors put in around the middle of next week. I was in and out in less than 10 minutes -- no hassles whatsoever.
Evofusion 07-18-2008, 01:06 PM Holy crap good to know that this is covered under warranty. My Passengers side broke about 2 weeks ago but I was putting it off. Thanks guys and this sucks!
both of mine have broken but my warranty was expired

There's a TSB on faulty sun visors for model years '04, '05 & '06 (up to July '06). My car was manufactured in January '06, so it seems my car came with the faulty visor. I'm looking forward to getting the new ones installed!
both of mine have broken but my warranty was expiredOuch. New ones run about $120 a each iirc. Be weary about buying a used one unless it is coming off of a '07 or '08 model.
bruce_van 07-24-2008, 01:23 AM My passenger side visor is busted too. Dealer finally sent me a note they received the new one. Hopefully it has been re-engineered.

My car is at the dealer as I type this. New front visors should be in within the next 1/2 hour. According to the TSB, the replacement visors are not the same as the old ones, and should correct this problem. :)

It corrected the problem for me :) I replaced the 2nd set back in Feb/Mar timeframe. So far the new and improved version have stood up to 100F+ conditions (I don't have covered parking where I work) with no hint of splitting. I think they just changed the type of adhesive since the look the same as the previous versions.

I got my car back and the new visors look similar to the old ones. Hopefully, these will be trouble free like your replacements.
I love this car! :)
HaiDoGGRX-8 07-25-2008, 12:45 PM Yeah a lot of the time they just take it down and apply adhesive. They did that twice to me, i knew because i made a little mark on the visors before i got them changed. It seems to be holding. If it happens again ill ask for brand new visors.

Well I know mine were replaced because both were cracked beyond repair. The driver's side was the worse and the tensioner mechanism was actually sticking out.
Two brand new sun visors and I'm a happy boy. This is what a warranty is for - and I had a pleasant experience at the dealership. I plan on buying another rotary vehicle in the future as long as Mazda brings that 16X to our shores. :)
rotorhead335 09-18-2008, 09:33 PM Just now joining the club. Have approximately four and one-half years, 68k miles and...flop, the visor cracked along the top seam and is like a wounded duck in front of my face. Dealer says $157+ for the part, plus labor.
I think that Mazda produced a brilliant car but had to cut corners where they could to offer it at the low list price. A fair trade, says I.
Glockperfection 09-20-2008, 02:05 PM buy it here for 100 and install it yourself.

yea they probably just loosen that lil black piece and grease it up and then reglue it...at least that what i did to mine but the glue i chose wasnt that best...ehh hem elmers school glue..lol jk naw expoxy but wrong kind and it worked for a while til the florida heat got to it
Tbolt 06-14-2009, 03:57 PM Sweet, I'm not the only one. Just broke my driver's side today, and the passenger side is not far from breaking too. Regretfully I tried my best fix, I didn't even think about it being covered under warrenty, hopefully my dealer still replaces it.
Have any of you taken one of the visors apart and looked at how it was designed? I'm no engineer nor do I play one on TV, but that seems like a dumb and over-complicated design. The part that is supposed to swing doesn't cleanly swing even with all the grease and small engine oil I could put on it. Frustrating.

Welcome to the club. It's amazing how such a minor part of the car has the most common problem. Mine broke last year and I used it probably 5 times TOTAL at that point.
Chamberlin 06-18-2009, 01:27 AM After reading 14 pages, I feel I at least deserve a spot on the broken visor list....
I always heard of the visor breaking, but I never really realized it was the actual visor mounting and the visor splitting... I live in Tucson (HI temps - ALL the time) and I use a Mazda windshield roll up foil shade, so I use my visors EVERY day, up and down 6 times a day to help hold up the shade. Now, after 65,000 miles on an early '05 model the passenger one blew up today. And like another poster who forgot to crack his windows, today I purposely shut my windows and sunroof because we are [ironically!] having covered parking installed at work, and for now, we all had to park in a dusty lot next to our building and I didn't want dust to blow into my sunroof etc. Looks like that extra little bit of temperature increase did the trick. Go F*$^#ing figure, the visor looks like somebody tried to steal it right off the hinge, all mangled inside. WTF. All of this is old hat to most of you, but I just wanted to chime in. I certainly hope the TSB'd visors are worth a crap. Time to talk to my old Mazda dealer buddy - he owes me one (or two).

trist 06-18-2009, 02:09 AM I guess I can join in on the list =) .. nothing to be happy about but glad to know I'm not the only one lol.
The extended 8yr / 100k miles warranty is for the engine and internals only, right? It wouldn't cover and fix something like this I'm guessin.. after all, mine is 04 w/ 68k+ miles =(
Nopstnz8 06-21-2009, 02:49 AM I fixed mine by drilling a hole on the edge of each side and then putting a screw and bolt on to hold it in place. I did it on the top of the visor so no one could see. It doesn't look to bad, and is a lot better than spending the money on a new one for the time being.
dezau 06-21-2009, 09:53 PM me2!
exarkun 07-20-2009, 12:45 PM Just happened to me. I have an '04 with 47500 miles. I'm assuming no more warranty coverage?
SayNoToPistons 07-20-2009, 10:03 PM What are some tips for keeping my visors from breaking? Maybe some reinforcement? I am always gentle with things but I cant say the same about my passengers... E.G. "omg i forgot to put my eye shadow on!! *bangs down visors*". -_-
Rhino8487 07-21-2009, 08:46 AM If you live in a place where it gets extremely hot in the summer, it's going to happen. I don't see anyway around it, ohter than putting nut/bolts in them like the other member. I don't want to drill holes in mine, and will grudginly shell out the $145 for a new one. Mine happened around 45K the drivers side was first and then the passenger side. The dealer replaced them for free. He probably felt sorry for me as I have had this car in the shop for an engine, clutch, and transmission replace all before 60K.

Keep you windows, and sunroof, if you have one, cracked open on very hot days. The one day I decided to not do this and it was over 100 degrees mine broke. I went outside on my break from work, and once I pulled down the visor, it snapped. The plastic can't handle the heat I believe, which makes it really cheap quality, but the visor design is nice.
fobjr101 07-22-2009, 07:09 AM Yeah it just happens. I have an extended warranty and surprisingly it is covered.
SayNoToPistons 07-30-2009, 09:18 PM Dammit, piece of crap driver side visor split today. I was gentle with it too. The 92 degree weather may have had something to do with it.
kanundra 08-15-2009, 11:21 AM Ugh, add me to the list... 04 w/ 47k.
rodjonathan 08-15-2009, 11:42 AM man i hate em someone on here should make a new design one or something
Rhino8487 08-16-2009, 03:52 AM I keep windows cracked and a sun shade in the windshield, but the out side temp is 115* here in the summers. Your car stays around 96 to 100* easily in the summer months. It's hard on everything inside the car.
voodooray 08-18-2009, 05:32 PM It's happened to me for the second time since buying the car new in 06, first time was after a couple of thousand miles. It was replaced no questions asked last time and I waited a couple of days for the part to come into stock.
This time I'm at 46k and the stealership apparently ordered the part 3 weeks ago and they are saying they still don't know when it will arrive (they initially said 1 week), I wonder if they're waiting for me to hit 48k and then say I need to buy the part myself as my warranty has expired. Anyway I'm going to take it in this Friday, this way regardless of when the part arrives the problem is reported while still under warranty.
I wouldn't mind but it's caused my entire head unit to shut down, no music, no central locking and keyless entry, no alarm and the trip odometer resets to zero after every shut off. At every start up it revs really high before idle...check engine light is on but I can't get a reading from an ODBII scanner....all for a crappy sunvisor!
Add me to the list of those who have fixed the damn thing themselves. Mine broke a couple months ago ('04, 55K miles, out of warranty). I was NOT going to pay $120 for a freaking visor without at least giving it a go myself, so I took the thing apart, and started looking at it.
First of all, to even get the stupid thing apart you are breaking all the clips that hold it together. Oh well, that's what super glue was made for right?
I tried the suggestion of popping the metal clip off that holds it so tight, but A) I was worried about it holding it's position up with it off, and B) I couldn't get it off anyway :)
Since the whole reason it breaks is because the two metal pieces begin to hold tighter together than the force of the plastic shell holding them in, and then pulling down on your visor becomes like a lever pulling the two apart, I just decided to try to reinforce it so that the squarish metal clip would hold in place. I wedged the metal bar and clip back into place, then put a nail running through several pieces of plastic, then through the clip, then through several more pieces of plastic. This won't hold very well itself, but it will at least give it some extra strength to keep from pulling out of place and plying the visor apart from the inside again. This nail is ONLY on the inside and just acts as a peg, it runs the same direction the metal bar does.
After that, I simply ran super glue around each visor clip and any other contact point I could see, and then used about 80 feet of masking tape to tape it together as tight as I could in several directions. I let it sit for 24 hours, and when I took the tape off, the hold was extremely tight, I couldn't tell any weak points without stressing it on purpose. I've put it back in my car, and so far so good, for a couple months.
Hope this can help someone. I wish I'd taken pictures, but I was only about 50% confident it would actually work :)
2tone 09-06-2009, 03:41 PM ....finally had this happen after 5+ years. it happened while i was driving, and i made the decision that i didn't give a damn about the vanity mirror light, so i yanked the shit down...the wires are still intact, but because i "ripped" it off, the connectors in the visor were bent.
soooo...it is pure coincidence that my CEL came on AND my entire stereo/time display doesn't work???? No fucking way the vanity mirror light is tied to all that other wiring......WTF? any knowledge or advice??? i hate driving without music or a frickin' clock!!
2tone 09-06-2009, 06:24 PM well i'll be!! blew a fuse...i'm sure this action blew it...but i couldn't tell you why! :dunno: i think it's fuse 14, the bottom most 15a fuse, but don't quote me, i put my book away. anyway, it's just listed as 'interior lights'...but that same fuse also power the clock/radio display!! replaced that fuse and wha-la, working again. fixing my visor will haven't to wait for a different post :)

Mazurfer 09-06-2009, 06:29 PM Ripping shit down is never really a good idea!
Must have caused a momentary short when you did so.
I assume you know there is a TSB for this and some dealers will even take care of it even if you are out of warranty.

Tayninh 06-25-2010, 07:52 AM Another victim added to this thread. I could not believe it until I read this thread. Must be the training ground for BP executives to have first worked for Mazda. Cheap is all I can say. Cheap plastic but its expensive to replace. I ripped my down and blew a fuse in the process. nice. So its a call to the dealer.
N5TEV 06-26-2010, 10:34 AM They are pretty easy to fix, if you have a little patience and care to spend $15-$20 at Lowes or Home Depot. I fixed mine 3+ years ago after a warranty replacement, and warranty ran out. If I can, I'll post a pic here in the next day or so.
Averren 06-30-2010, 12:19 PM Welcome to the RX-8 Club. Your not a "real" RX-8 owner until you break your visor :fingersx:
I just broke mine last night on my way home from work. I was so P/O'd I tried to rip it off and blew the radio and console fuse (this seems very common if you pull on the visor). Replaced the fuse and will deal w/out a visor until the sun bothers me in the fall.
65, 000 so out of warrantee...:crying:
After looking up broken visor I'm surprised I made it this long before breaking one.
mZimm 06-30-2010, 01:47 PM I recently purchased an RX-8 and couldn't believe that the sun visor was missing...its obviously a pretty common problem, and I can't find any at salvage yards around me.
shinka~mami 06-30-2010, 01:51 PM :( i discovered my passenger side visor has the crack in it yesterday annnnnnnd just a couple months ago i replaced the drivers side visor (under warranty but over 50K miles so i had to pay deductible)....
grrrrrrrrrrrr. and also :(
C.Man182ay.com 07-11-2010, 11:42 PM hey my rx8 is a 04 and only has 41,000 miles. i didnt buy the car from a mazda dealership, but if i took it to a mazda dealership, you think i can get me a new passenger side sun visor under the mazda warranty?
laythor 07-12-2010, 12:07 AM nope
I had to replace my driver's side last year, and my passenger side last week. Last year was free, this year it was almost free (it's nice being friendly with the parts department guy) :)
mZimm 07-12-2010, 05:56 PM Mazda charges $130 for the 04-05 sun visor...the 06-08 has a slightly different color and different airbag sticker, FWIW.
laythor 07-12-2010, 07:22 PM i paid 60
Cylestyne 09-26-2010, 10:48 AM Thread revival. The passenger visor on my 04 broke today. No way am I paying $100+ for this crap. I'm gonna take the visor to my factory and see if my craftsmen can industrial-glue this thing together to keep it from falling apart. And here I thought being a JDM model, it would have better build quality. What crap.
N5TEV 09-26-2010, 01:06 PM Here is the solution I came up with and posted.

Grace_Excel 09-26-2010, 02:36 PM I only went to Home Depot and bought two washers, two bolts, and two self-securing washers for less than $8. I use the visor a lot driving under the California sun and I've made the assumption that the glue would not last long. I didn't care much for aesthetic looks, as long as it serves it's purpose I'm okay with using the mentioned hardware.

rotary magic 07-06-2011, 09:39 PM Opened it up to lube the pivot shaft. Then super glued it shut. Clamped for 24 hrs and good to go. I will use the visors rarely and gently from now on.
gabrod72 07-07-2011, 03:19 PM Cyanoacrylate is a wonderful thing. If these come apart on you, just clean off the area as best you can or even take a knife to the plastic to remove the old layer of glue... then lightly apply glue and clamp... should be good as stated in the above post. Mine broke 4 times or so under warranty.
Grace_Excel 07-08-2011, 02:37 AM Fix it with my method and you won't have to keep using a messy glue :yelrotflm
Bullitt 08-10-2011, 10:12 PM I went the way of the mating bolt. So far, so good.

Bullitt 08-11-2011, 12:18 AM Thanks. Let's see how strong they stay. BTW, 3/4˝ by the arm, 5/8˝ on the other (narrower) side. $1.07 and $.80 at Lowe's.
Grace_Excel 08-21-2011, 03:54 AM Let's see how yours turned out!
pdxhak 08-21-2011, 10:38 AM I thought there was a TSB for the visors? A couple years ago mine were replaced with the updated version and they have not broke since. I went through 2 sets before and was very annoyed each time they broke.
Grace_Excel 11-01-2011, 06:15 PM Anyone need a driver side sun visor?
Bullitt 11-01-2011, 11:49 PM Mine are holding great. Sex bolts is the way to go. :)
