View Full Version : how many people are running a cat with their turbo'ed 8?
c41250n 07-21-2007, 03:53 PM I'm just trying to see how many people are running a cat with their turbo'ed 8!
I'm currently now running catless, but it really stinks! sometimes I just can't stand it! I'm hoping to get my car tune again with a cat! but I'm also hearing a lot of people saying that itz gonna burn through the cat in a very short period of time!
so I just want to see if anybody are having a cat with their turbo'ed 8!

c41250n 07-21-2007, 09:56 PM cool....thanks a lot!
mysql101 07-21-2007, 09:58 PM you're in CA, time to move...
stickmantijuana 07-21-2007, 10:34 PM with the cat, it makes very smooth yet also very constipated sound imho. oddly, i liked it much better than the sound i got after switching to a straight mid pipe which seemed to pronunciate the individual engine cycle sounds much clearly (it's also much more quieter with the cat). friends have told me i look like i'm taking a huge dump when i go into boost when i had my cat on. :)
you also get lot of smell coming into the cabin when dropping off your friends without the cat (ie. idling with doors open).
c41250n 07-22-2007, 03:10 AM you're in CA, time to move...
i know.....CA sucks!
c41250n 07-22-2007, 03:12 AM you also get lot of smell coming into the cabin when dropping off your friends without the cat (ie. idling with doors open).
thatz the most reason why i want a cat, casue during the summer time, i like to have my window rolled down as i am driving in the city, but most of the time i just cant stand the smell.
so i'll probably gonna get a high flow cat and have my car retune again!
MazdaManiac 07-22-2007, 03:22 AM Or, you could just get it tuned right and not be all that stinky at idle.
MazdaManiac 07-22-2007, 03:51 AM No CAT at all. BB CAT-less midpipe.
WoodsOfGreenRx8 07-22-2007, 04:23 AM i know.....CA sucks!
Cant hate on Cali. Is got In & Out!
MazdaManiac 07-22-2007, 04:43 AM Cant hate on Cali. Is got In & Out!
So does Arizona, but we don't have the pollution, crime, taxes or bureaucratic nonsense.
WoodsOfGreenRx8 07-22-2007, 04:54 AM Yea, but AZ doesnt have In & Out next to the beach..( Im clearly biased. =))
Now to say a state doesnt have bureaucratic nonsense, is well, nonsense!
MazdaManiac 07-22-2007, 05:08 AM Beaches are disgusting in this country.
Better than Kuwait, Qatar and Iraq, worse than Okinawa, way worse than The Marshall Islands.
I would say fair to middling...
PS. I have a cat with Greddy Turbo Kit.
09Factor 07-22-2007, 12:14 PM Turbo with Hi-flow.

We don't need beaches. We have dunes.
mdw1000 07-22-2007, 12:54 PM Check out some of the beaches in the FL panhandle - especially near pensacola and Appilachicola (sp?) - beautiful white sand, and it is pretty easy to find places where you hardly have to see another soul.
t-run/8 07-22-2007, 01:34 PM Man, and I think my supercat really stinks. I can't imagine a midpipe..
WoodsOfGreenRx8 07-22-2007, 04:09 PM I'd have to say the best beaches I have been to:
1. Diego Garcia..
2. La Maddalena, Italy.
3. Okinawa
mysql101 07-22-2007, 04:18 PM I lived in Thailand for about 2 years. I liked their beaches a lot more than the stuff in the united states.
But limited to just here, I much prefer east coast over west coast. The water is much more inviting.
MazdaManiac 07-22-2007, 04:27 PM You haven't lived until you've been to Super Paradise (yes, that is actually its name) on the island of Mykonos.

WoodsOfGreenRx8 07-22-2007, 04:29 PM Well, back on Topic.. Do all High Flow cats, or running with out cats cause such a smell, or is it as simple as MM said, & getting the car tuned?
I have a mid pipe to replace the cat, but just havent installed it, really dont need a smelly car..
mysql101 07-22-2007, 04:44 PM doesn't matter. drive hard and you'll never be downwind. also put your AC to recirculate.
c41250n 07-22-2007, 05:31 PM Or, you could just get it tuned right and not be all that stinky at idle.
so basically what you said is now my car stinks because of my car hasn't gotten tuned right?
so what shoulf I tell the tuner, should I tell him not to tune it as rich? cause now sometime it backfires a lot when idle!
also, how much hp do you think I will approximately loss if I run a high flow cat?
c41250n 07-22-2007, 05:35 PM you gotta go to hawaii for the nice beaches!

what cat are you using? the stock cat or the high flow cat? and how long have you had it for?
c41250n 07-22-2007, 05:42 PM Turbo with Hi-flow.

your cat probably has already failed on you!
c41250n 07-22-2007, 05:59 PM doesn't matter. drive hard and you'll never be downwind. also put your AC to recirculate.
but most of the time I have to wait at the stopsign or the stoplight! and also, my car is having some idling problem with the AC on!
tdiddy 07-22-2007, 06:01 PM I'd have to say the best beaches I have been to:

Diego has plenty of beach. Just not enough toilet paper.
you gotta go to hawaii for the nice beaches!
Waking up on North Shore, Oahu at sunrise with the whales singing and not another sole within sight or sound. That is beautiful!!!
faboo 08-17-2007, 11:37 PM you gotta go to hawaii for the nice beaches!
I just got back from a week in Maui......very dissappointed with the beachs around the northern bulge.....i wont pass judgement on any other islands...but Maui doesnt have jack on Huntington, Malibu or Santa Monica
NO WAVES FOR A WHOLE WEEK:puke:

What do you expect. Winter is the surf season for the North Shore. Come back in Dec - Feb if you want to see some real surf.
edit: back on topic...I don't have a turbo RX-8 (yet) but my previous turbocharged cars were all run cat-less (no emissions testing in Hawaii). Never had a problem with the smell.
Rocketman1976 08-19-2007, 02:12 PM Cats are for girls(that don't drive Rotaries) and emissions control experts( no emissions in FL! ). Run it with no cats if you are running a turbo. Cats are a turbo's enemy, free flowing intake and exhaust is what they love. I have the AP Titanium tipped 3" with no cats, right now with no turbo, but I bought the exhaust in anticipation of my turbo. At this time my car is insanely obnoxious sounding and I drive with my windows closed most the time, but from what I understand the turbo should quiet it down a little and if it does at all, I will be happy. I wouldn't have it any other way, gotta let your Turbo breath!

I guess we will all have to move to Florida, then.
Most of us in the real world have to deal with local laws or we can't drive on the street (at least, not for very long).
That said, there are ways to get around the PCM's OCD with regards to emissions and the CAT.
It just seems that some of the more notable performance experts have not turned their attention to this detail.
Maybe they live in Florida...
mysql101 08-19-2007, 02:54 PM the borla + catless midpipe was so loud I had to remove one or the other because it was too loud NA. With the turbo on, it was quiet again.
That's not to say that you can't get it loud with a turbo - cause the hks hi-power and catless is quite loud. I can't imagine that combo on a NA car.

Can't you just keep the stock cat in your garage and put it back in when you have to do your emissions check? That's what we used to do when we had emissions.
I'm glad someone mentioned that their car was really loud then they put a turbo on and it sounded better, I was worried and I miss the fresh air and my sunroof.
