View Full Version : Possible replacement for Toyota AE86?

Now that the Kabura doesn't appear to be headed for production and the BMW 1-series is portly, we don't have many choices for lightweight RWD cars that can seat more than 2 (the RX8 is pretty much it).

This seems too good to be true, but http://www.7tune.com/?p=63#more-63 claims that Toyota is working on a replacement for the AE86 that weighs 2200 pounds and costs <$13k. It's doubtful, but it'd be very interesting even if it's a few hundred pounds or a few thousand dollars more (especially if they put in the 1.8l 180 hp engine from the Matrix/defunct-Celica GTS).

at first i was thinking they should leave it alone - like making a horribly made movie out of really good book, but that actually looks kinda modern and cool. but it's just a corolla that's gonna be fr. chassis code isn't gonna be ae86...

not to mention it looks a bit on the heavy side, but i'm sure it'll have technology to make up for it. it'll def. be our competition being fr and 50/50 weight distribution.

Making a Corolla that's RWD sounds OK to me. A lot of these FWD econoboxes are responsive and would be a blast if they were RWD.

Not sure what you mean by the weight... the article says ~2200 pounds. Even the AE86 from 20 years ago was in the 2200-2400 range. I expect if this actually makes it to production, it'll be 2500+ (even the lowly Yaris hatch is ~2300).

argg just too plain and big.
Remember how small the AE86's were? This thing is the same size as the RSX or Celica.
I want a smaller 2+2 RWD. For Cheap. With decent styling. Don't they still make the Trueno/Levin for Japan with the 4AGE engine in it?

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read the full article and made assumptions. They say it will be around the same weight of the AE86 while trying to keep costs down (And gas mileage up)! That is a + in my book and would even think about buying one. Right next to my 8 and a small 4WD SUV.

Where is this coming from? From all we have seen on this car, there's no way they are not manufacturing it.

When was the last time Mazda gave us any Kabura info? A week after the auto show it debuted at?

Obviously nobody knows for certain and there was another rumor back in April that an RX7 based on the Kabura concept is being developed, so I'm still keeping my fingers crossed. However, there are indicators that it's not gonna happen:

I am also thinking the same way. Actually, I even made a poll for this single query on the other forums. Thanks

I'm having to get rid of my 8 before the end of this year for financial reasons...I got a 91' accord as a replacement =(. I probably wont be back on the market for another nice car til I'm done with school. By then I hope there's a new rotary powered car I could buy....like a new model rx7. If not...This toyota would be my next car.
