View Full Version : Few questions (Long Read)
jrm07211987 07-10-2007, 01:14 PM Hey guys,
I am not an 8 owner. I actually bought a Mustang and that is my car of choice. But my friend bought an 05 RX-8 about 4 months ago. I am on here trying to learn about the car, engine and modifications. I like to do my research so that I know what I am talking about.
I am not into racing but my friend with the 8 is. From what I have read, the RX-8 handles well but it is not a race car. He claims to not care about straight lines (because the RX-8 is a track designed car) but all of his races are straight line races.
My friend is always claiming to beat cars such as 05+ Mustang GT's, Subaru WRX STI's, Porsche Boxsters and many others. I don't see this happening simply because they are faster cars. He says that he beats them on the highway. Personally, I think that if you are going to race straight line races, then you should race from stops and obvisouly from rolls on tracks because of multiple laps.
Will the RX-8 really take all of these cars on the highway?
How much rear wheel horsepower do the 6 speed MT's have stock? (He claims over 210-220 rwhp because of the carbon fiber driveshaft)
Thanks for any info. I want him to be informed about his car rather than making up random info. When he spent the $24,000 on the car, he didn't know the HP, tourque or any other specs about the car. I just don't want him to waste money on random things and talking to other drivers like he is going to win and making an ass of himself.
yiksing 07-11-2007, 07:37 AM Is your friend's car modded?
If its a stock, he needs some mouth wash

You seem more knowledgeable about his car than your friend is.
Baited question answers itself.
altiain 07-11-2007, 10:29 AM Your friend is an idiot.

and I think the op is just trolling...
WTF is this doing in the Racing section, anyways? :lol2:

His car will make in the neighborhood of 170-190 whp. And around 140 lb/ft torque.
Nothing besides going with FI will increase the power output by any significant amount. So if he wants power, tell him to save up about 6k - 10k. Then he'll make 100+ more whp, and double the torque.
Cody Red 07-11-2007, 12:39 PM Your friend is a liar. Although, if you do legal racing i.e. auto-xing, track days, he will own you unless of course you're a REALLY great driver and can somehow handle all the terrible weight distribution of a v8 stang.
But on highways our cars getting eaten alive unless the 8 has gone FI.

haha I referred him to this thread since he wanted to know about racing the 8 hahaha
thought you guys might have a better idea if what his friend with the 8 says is true.

roll ons on the highway are not racing haha
mysql101 07-11-2007, 12:53 PM flooring it on a roll still isn't the rx-8's strong suite since it lacks torque when NA...
Raptor2k 07-11-2007, 01:07 PM I've beaten a few Mustangs in the straights and highways, expecting to lose. It's been close though, I've been ahead by a car length or half a car length. Not sure why.
mysql101 07-11-2007, 01:09 PM most mustangs are v6

I thought it just lacked low end torque...

it lacks torque, period. we're talking 140 tq at peak!
I've got a lawn mower with more torque than that.
SouthFL 07-11-2007, 04:27 PM Figure our car traps in the mid 90ish range at the end of the 1/4mile. Those figures are within range of the anemic mid '90s mustangs, early Boxsters, stock WRX (non STi) etc. Trap speed gives you an idea of what your roll race outcome potential is like.
Throw in a vivid imagination and you're beating lsx powered vehicles and Mach 1's in your 8... hehehe ;)
jrm07211987 07-12-2007, 06:37 AM Alright. Thanks for all of the info guys. I figured that all of this was the case. I just needed some reassurance. I don't know why he thinks all of this, but to each his own. He said he go break into a 5 second 0-60 and into 14's in the quarter (I know the 8 is not a drag car). Maybe I'll just get him to go to the track and run it. I don't really race, but I just don't want to listen to false information for the next 4 years.
Thanks for answering all of my questions and respecting that I am not an RX-8 owner. Some forums will just bash you for going on to learn and ask questions.

14s are very realistic for the 8.

I know. But he has some bald tires and no clue what he is doing when it comes to running his car. You need a car and a driver. From what I have read it takes a decent driver to take an 8 into 14's.
yiksing 07-13-2007, 10:42 AM Hey, nice mustang
