I like it - looks aggressive!! :)
wow n rider , that exhaust sits low. Does it scrape anywhere? Do you still have the exhaust? Can i hear it? Video clip or something.
staticlag 06-23-2007, 01:57 AM How much does it weigh?
DrewMan 06-23-2007, 02:32 AM that would scrape over every speed hump known to man
XDEEDUBBX 06-23-2007, 02:34 AM too low 4 me but looks nice
peterisurhero 06-23-2007, 02:58 AM looks nice... but hella low. good luck with that. you'll have bunch of scrapes before you know it.
but still, looks nice. hahah
NgoRX8 06-23-2007, 03:16 AM it's low, but it's right between the wheels. the only way you'll scrape is by taking a huge angle on a huge speed bump or anywhere that will stick something 3 inches high under the car. otherwise parking block or going straight up/down steep driveways looks like it could own it up too.
man, i still want this exhaust. all it needs is better tips.
N rider89 06-23-2007, 07:12 AM How much does it weigh?
~30 lbs

yeah it does hang pretty low. i wonder if the shop could raise it up a little but oh well. i just wanted to try it out, but it is low. Im not all that hot on the tips either, i might get some new ones put on like the RB ones. i like the double wall look of those better
09Factor 06-23-2007, 08:36 AM Nice looking, but sits really low. It needs it's own skid plate.
hehehe

faboo 06-23-2007, 02:59 PM Are those General UHP's??
lepichichi 06-23-2007, 03:13 PM its just beautiful....nice job.........
moRotorMotor 06-23-2007, 03:31 PM I have a question for N rider89. Is your car lowered and does that play a role on the 3 or so inches from the lowest point of the Helix exhaust? Would there be any possible issues with it scraping. I am assuming it would take almost 3 inches of suspension travel for it to meet with the ground, unless you have a high bump in the road go under the middle of the car.
PerformRX-8 06-23-2007, 07:38 PM rider, how much did you pay for it?
N rider89 06-23-2007, 09:37 PM Are those General UHP's??
yes they sure are:)
N rider89 06-23-2007, 09:41 PM I have a question for N rider89. Is your car lowered and does that play a role on the 3 or so inches from the lowest point of the Helix exhaust? I am assuming it would take almost 3 inches of suspension travel for it to meet with the ground, unless you have a high bump in the road go under the middle of the car.
to tell you the truth im not lowered, but my car sits noticeably lower than a stock one.:uhh: at one of the meets i was comparing my car (with stock wheels & tires) to the one next to me, and it looked like my car was lowered. i had a lot less wheel gap in the rear. now my car is on 19's.
since my car seems to want to sit low that would really contribute to the exhaust hanging so low. also if you got an exhaust shop they could possibly make it higher also.
N rider89 06-23-2007, 09:41 PM rider, how much did you pay for it?
$650
that is a nice looking exhaust. and i agree it is freakin low ><
whoneedspistons 06-23-2007, 09:44 PM that is also a little low for me... it still looks nice though

imput1234 06-23-2007, 10:50 PM looks aggressive as hell, but must be a bitch on bumps
User24 07-03-2007, 08:49 AM Arrived safely back in San Diego around 9:30 PM. I'll pick up the exhaust from the front desk at 9 am in the morning when they open, snap a few pics, and I'll be off to get it put on. I feel like I've been gone for a year; I won that auction back on May 31st!
I wasn't able to view your pictures earlier due to the workplace's firewall, but now I'm back on my own connection I can see it clearly. I will take similar pictures for comparison, as my rx8 is not lowered at all, stock Dunlop 18 tires/suspension.
Wilson 07-03-2007, 07:01 PM Get a measurement from the bottom of it to the ground. Please.
User24 07-03-2007, 08:05 PM There is 4 inches of clearance on my particular model.

yiksing 07-03-2007, 08:18 PM Wow, thats ugly
NgoRX8 07-03-2007, 08:32 PM definitely not as low as Nrider's. it'd be safer for most people.
looks good
Moostafa29 07-03-2007, 11:04 PM IzzI had that exhaust for awhile, and didn't have any trouble with it scraping that I remember hearing about, and his car was dropped like crazy. Also, do NOT get a aftermarket cat. The combo is literally the loudest thing I've ever heard.
rotorocks 07-05-2007, 04:07 PM Wow, thats ugly
That was my exact first impression.
this thing look hideous.
I mean it is shiny... Can't argue there, but how can you not see it?
Whoever manufactured that thing, must have never even tried to fit it onto an 8. Just slapped together the pipes and pushed it out.
It would look good though if you raised that entire center assembly all the way up, but that would require some pipe bending and fabrication work, though.
I bet for another $100 at the exhaust shop you could get it fixed nicely.
NgoRX8 07-05-2007, 07:33 PM are you kidding?
the reason for this exhaust being so low is for exhaust flow. look at it, no 90 degree bends. it's got to be one of the best flowing exhausts for the 8 thus far. parts of it had to be lower fit the muffler.
and as noted many times, which people dont' seem to get is the low parts of the exhaust are right between the axles. if both rear wheels go up, the exhaust won't scrape. the only possible problems would be posed towards those who are lowered and have to angle a lot. and moostafa noted IzoomzoomI didn't have problems with it when he had it on.
RojoOcho 07-05-2007, 09:28 PM That's one pothole from being a mess... Good luck with that. And I'm not being sarcastic.
9krpmrx8 07-05-2007, 09:34 PM Wow $650.00 for next to zero horsepower and it will be toast the first time you forget and pull into the wrong place. To each his own.
User24 07-06-2007, 12:20 AM Wow $650.00 for next to zero horsepower and it will be toast the first time you forget and pull into the wrong place. To each his own.
$650 on anything rx8 gets next to zero horsepower, other than a $12 Ebay chip.
1. "Low factor". Looking at it, it is trivial to build another exhaust that doesn't hang so low. Theoretically if you were a machine, you could put your hand underneath the lowest part, and just push up, and there's room underneath the RX8 for it to just go up into an empty space. I don't see how that would affect the angling of the exhaust pipes much, if at all. I speculate it was made like that in order to make it visible, and to make it look different.
2. "Fixing". The shop told me it's not worth correcting the low overhead on the existing piece, just better to make a whole new one.
3. "Performance". Not as much "coast" travel after letting up on the exhaust--car slows down faster. Swifter acceleration in 2nd and 3rd gears--there's a brief moment or two on the way to redline where I am actually accelerating faster than the stock exhaust. More noticeable when already travelling at freeway speeds, and dropping to 3rd gear to pass. Not as noticeable in 2nd gear on the onramp.
4. "Weight". Approx 33 pounds. 6, 12, 15, was approximately the weight of the pieces individually.
5. "Sound". Possible bad news. I certainly haven't gotten it to sound quite like that Youtube video. My impression of that video, is the speed and angriness there, slightly like an angry V12 exhaust pulse. Mine, in the underground parking lot, doesn't sound like that. It's slower, more bass, and not as angry. I could record it, but I would need to purchase a few items: Two measurement-type microphones with 20Hz-20kHz response, microphone preamplifier with phantom power and digital output, short microphone stand with stereo microphone bar. If I recorded it, you could decide for yourself how similar the sound is, but it will depend on whether anyone asks for a sound clip. If anything, you can hear a similarity, or at worst I've just saved 10 people from spending money on a duplicate. Also, the drone zone is at exactly freeway speeds, 60 mph or 65 mph. At these speeds, your hear it somewhat, but feel it more as a pressure on your ear drums like the cabin is suddenly being pressurized.
6. "Smell". The exhaust has that new burn-in smell. I thought it would be well broken in as it was used in a test environment, but there's that distinct smell. Could it be that the sound has yet to settle in fully?
7. "Speed bump". I've tested this over speed bumps by driving as I usually do, no problems. I usually do not slow down for speed bumps unless there is a car right in front of me. 25 mph zone means 25 mph over the speed bump. Looking at the width of the speed bump in front of me and its height, and how gradual or sharp it slopes, will determine how fast I can go. Sharp, narrow, tall I will slow down because the jolt hits hard. Wide, gradual, short, fast as I want.
8. "Mufflers". The shop said they would take a look at the perforations, and they said it was "just a straight through" muffler. There's another helix exhaust thread that says they are Helix-designed.
NgoRX8 07-06-2007, 12:35 AM thanks for the update. what would you say it sounds like right now, in your opinion?
i agree the low factor is also to make it look different, and it looks great IMO.
User24 07-06-2007, 12:41 AM It's mostly very bassy compared to the other exhaust videos I've watched. A cold start, cold engine, quick 2000-3500 rev, in a mall parking garage, sounds most like that Youtube video, but again more bassy and not as angry. Potentially all those videos on the internet of the RB, Hymee, Greddy, and Corksport are poorly representative of the actual bass output of those exhausts, depending on the microhpone specifications of the video cameras they used. I can't just go pick up some vocal microphones at Best Buy with 60Hz lower limits and expect it to sound like it does in real life.
If you are around San Diego zip 91911 and want to hear it, shoot me a PM or email.
cleoent 07-06-2007, 01:12 AM I really dont like it.
rotorocks 07-06-2007, 11:07 AM Speed bumps are not a the issue here.
It is random stuff, that sometimes you have no choice but to let pass in between your wheels at a high speed, that you should think about.
I don't know maybe it is just the angle of the shot that makes it look so crappy.
and all that empty space in the muffler bay above it. just makes it look very "Unfinished" on the otherwise very well thought through and complete design of the car.
it just doesn't look like it belongs.

Really? $600.00 give or take got me 50HP or so.
rotorocks 07-07-2007, 11:58 AM Really? $600.00 give or take got me 50HP or so.
What?
50hp from an exhaust? You are so full of shit!!! :spank:
The only way to get 50HP out of $600 is to put Nitrous on.
User24 07-07-2007, 01:07 PM I think he's talking about paying a strong crew $600 to stand outside and help push behind the car. Really helpful on the dragstrip launches, I suppose. Kind of like bobsledding, except they don't jump into the cockpit afterwards.
User24 07-09-2007, 12:59 AM Should I be worried that they did not re-attach the electrical ground wire? It is just hanging there in photo #1. Anyway, for a better look here's 14 shots, 14 angles, all on a lift, behind-around-upside down.

Jedi54 07-25-2007, 12:08 PM reminds me of some of the 350 exhausts.
NgoRX8 07-25-2007, 12:20 PM Z guys scrape their exhausts all the time.

The left tip has always been too close, slowly eating away at the plastic exhaust shroud side and top.
I've been looking for an aluminum rear diffuser to replace the plastic but it doesn't look like they make them for this car.
NgoRX8 08-31-2007, 08:42 PM wow... you must've ran the car very hard. they do sell aluminum exhaust shrouds for the stock bumper.

that's going to hurt .. speedbumps > that exhaust.
