View Full Version : Dilema:Brand new or 2nd hand??
regret 05-26-2007, 02:59 AM Today went to see few rx8.
Brand new 6AT from Dealer - $97k. 3 yrs or 100,000km warranty.
But the dealer say OMV $26K oni...i think he under declare.
Saw a forumer's 4AT 8(not sure if it is ok to say who, so better dun), very well maintained. 1.5 yrs old, his looking at $90k. Higher paper of cos, but parf system still 55%, same as new car. Warranty of cos no more. Plus transfer fee & higher interest, not really worth it.
I bought a new car b4, sold after barely less den 2 yrs. lost alot. So dun wan to buy new cars anymore. But looking at the current situation, it seems tat 2nd auto rx8 not really worth buying(no offence).
Brand new 6MT-$116k
2nd hand 6MT-$80(2.5-3yr)-100K(1-1.5yr)
2nd hand 6MT still can consider but l find it tiring to drive a manual car.
Any solid advice? lm sure many who just bought a 8 face the same problem as l am now. But den again, if l can drive the 8 for at least 3 yrs, den i think brand new ok lo...but l dun think l can make it cos the longest l have drove a car is 1yr 8 mths, shortest 3 mths..sianzzz...
mkl22 05-26-2007, 03:14 AM i bought a 2nd hand due to not willing to lose $$$.want a more consistent depreciation. bought mine mainly cause high paper and low mileage. a new one would have been 9k+ a year in depre vs 8k for mine about a year back. and paper of the new one was low low low. i can get rid of mine at anytime and just lose slightly more than the yearly depreciation.
SE3P_HKG 05-26-2007, 04:09 AM If you drive an RX, always choose manual... the engine simply don't have enough low end torque. You will find the car slow with 4AT.

I'm waiting out for 6AT end of the year. The 4AT was first batch and any problems were fixed for the 6AT model. The 6AT should also be more fuel efficient. Warranty quite important as parts of the 8 are not cheap.

I don't quite agree,
Warranty is usually valid for 1 year only from new, and parts usually only start to fail from the 2nd year or even 3rd year onwards.,
fuel efficency..... marginal only lah.

Well what if there's a 3 year warranty? Recently there's 1 covered by CAS but servicing at Monster. That's prob the one our friend regret had been offered.

a 3 year warranty would be good! 1 year is as good as not having one.
but personal preference for me would be 2nd hand. not worth buying brand new cars as the only benefit is the 'shiokness' of being the first owner

yeah but having read about the problems of the 1st batch of 4ATs, I'm a bit wary on getting a second hand. Have also checked with my collegues who owned it, similar problems. In this case since they have a 6AT might as well go for it. Last feedback from my conversation with Monster about the 6AT is quite good, very little problems so far. Of course it is still early days since it was launched less than a year.
regret 05-26-2007, 09:54 AM is it true tat the new 6AT RX8 OMV is oni $26k??
SushiFan 05-26-2007, 10:07 AM is it true tat the new 6AT RX8 OMV is oni $26k??
it depends on which PI you get from. If the PI has good direct links with Japan side, it should be in the 30k region. If the PI goes through another supplier (the one that has direct links) then it'll be in the 26K region. But the suprising statistic is that MM's 6MT's recent OMV is about 29k. So I do not know what to make of it.
regret 05-26-2007, 10:21 AM So low?? but last time was ard 35-40k rite?? hw come such a drastic drop??
SushiFan 05-26-2007, 10:37 AM So low?? but last time was ard 35-40k rite?? hw come such a drastic drop??
Have no idea. Maybe they install a lot of things locally?
1st : The price different on a used unit can let you rebuilt the engine for many times.
2nd : Maybe can save some/a lot of $$$$ for modding if you can find a modded unit.
3rd : Not so pain if the car got stone chipped or scratched later on.
4th : No need to lose so much $$$$ if sell off later.
FYI, I drove a 6 speeds manual and it is really left-foot-friendly. It gave me so much fun. But don't follow what initial-d characters' way of driving.
CoMBo8 05-26-2007, 02:13 PM if you gonna used it every day and very often, getting a new car and warranty is a wise choice. however, if you gonna have it as a weekend car, then get a used one.
SushiFan 05-26-2007, 08:01 PM For 6MT, If buy for weekend usage only, your cost per day is = 80k / 104 days = $769. If Buy brand new for every day usage = 116k/365 = $317. Still more "expensive" to buy second hand?
BlackEight 05-26-2007, 08:51 PM bro,
what is your main criteria?
budget / monthly installment?
warranty / spare parts?
low end torque / modding?
if your concern is budget, work out the depreciaton and monthly installment
on each scenario. who doesn't want to drive a brand new car.
but can one hold the ride for 3 to 5 yrs to break even?
i strongly disagree with the fact that the 6AT has less problems or
is more fuel efficient, there is no proven basis to that statement.
4AT or 6MT, there are various production batches. maybe if it is said about
the very first production run in 03 being more problematic, it might be true
but then again can anione clarify this apart from the ECU being diff versions?
6AT uses the same 6 port engine as the 6MT and the fuel efficiency of the 6MT
is more or less the same as the 4AT. What will affect the fuel efficiency is if u decided to change to XXL rims n tyres and your driving style.
Then again is it fair to compare the fuel efficiency of a brand new 6AT against
a 2 year old 4AT for that matter? Let wait out the 6AT for the next 2 years and see what problems it will crop up and how a seasoned 6AT will fair in terms of fuel efficiency. Perhaps using a new 6 spd tranny has its setbacks?
like what many have said, 1 year warranty is as good as none.
what are the chances of a brand new ride having a major manufacturing problem or any problems at all? and then again if those problems that crop up are "wear and tear" it is also not covered. even if u have a 3 year warranty from PI, simple problems there can resolve, major problems i doubt they have the expertise.
if yr concerned is hassle free back up service, go for Mazda motor 6MT.
low end torque is lacking between the 1000 to 3000rpm spectrum.
the torque kicks in after that. do u need the power at the traffic lights most of the time or do u need the power when on the road for overtaking and highway drive?
If you want AT driving and power, go n SC or TC your ride. Have yr cake n eat it at the same, it should still be cheaper then getting a 6MT. minor mods do not give you the power you'll expect.
but if yr sole concern is 0-100 or HP,
don't buy the 8 or the BMW630, 325CI or the SLK200. they don't excel in that area.

6AT is the new in the mkt, its still too early to say whether there are problems or not. Like black8 says, its still to early to say anything abt the 6AT now...

Like I said, I had also mentioned its still early days, but generally things should getting better and not worse for the later releases. Since the new release is after 3-4 years from the first batch, I do believe enough time has passed for them to fix the problems of the 1st batch.

Ermmmmmmmmmmmmmm roll a dice?=)
regret 05-27-2007, 06:37 AM actually l thought of a solution!! if l can find a 1 yr old 6AT at ard 12-14k cheaper den a brand new one, that will prob solve the prob!! So when did the first 6AT come out? or rather any 6AT selling their 8??? hehe
sqflyer 05-27-2007, 09:39 AM 6ATs are out less than a year here... maybe only 6 months or so. You'll be hard pressed to find a second hand one for sale unless the owner desperate/bankrupt. If depreciation for new 6AT is really only $8.3K vs $8K for used 4AT. I would get the new 6AT without even giving it a single thought. $300 a year is next to nothing for a new car compared to a used one.

Just to throw up a question for value estimation, what do you think would be the selling price of these new batch of 6AT 3 years down the road? Current pricing leaves it at a depreciation of 8.++k, you think it'll be worth $65k (7.6k depreciation) 3 years down the road?

very well explain in simple math. infact, i didnt even think of counting like that. hehe... maybe i should count like that the next time i purchase. thanks for info.
my formula work this way. 80k+modding <= 116k.

The above math is just assuming 1 year usage. But it is the ratio that's important since number of years in both scenarios are a constant.

Sorry... my crystal ball looks very cloudy. Actually, if I knew such things, I would be driving a Ferrari or a Lambo instead of an RX-8.

The depre is based on driving the car to the end. But note that the difference here is u oni need to drive the second hand 8 for prob another 7-8 yrs more for 8k depre, whereas u need to drive 10 yrs for the new 8. In short, the shorter the lifespan of the car, the closer u are to the real depre of the car.
In other words, if you intend to drive your RX8 for long (3-5 years?), get a new one. Otherwise, can settle for a 2nd hand one?

Definitely. This rule applies to all cars, or even anything under the sun.
Prob is l think the longest l will drive the 8 is 2 yrs. So l guess lm better off settling for a second hand one. :)

back to the topic...i think the 1st batch of 6AT arrive our shores Dec. 06.

but the prob is 2nd hand 4AT not worth it cos of the price diff. so must buy 2nd 6AT......

Then I guess happy waiting for 2nd 6AT coz the first batch was in Dec 06 (I guess). In other words, the oldest 6AT should only be 6 months old. Haven't noticed any less than 6 month old AT Rx8 on sgcarmart so far.

Sorry... my crystal ball looks very cloudy. Actually, if I knew such things, I would be driving a Ferrari or a Lambo instead of an RX-8.
Actually nobody was asking for crystal ball answers. There must have some misunderstanding to my question. Was hoping for experienced people who can give guidelines on how to estimate. E.g. performance cars do not normally sell at below $XXXX.XX depreciation, or the % variation of the first purchase depreciation is normally not more than a certain amount. Or using existing examples where 2004 4AT currently selling at 75-77% of original purchase price, so perhaps 75% can be a useful guide?

honestly does it matter? I mean you are buying the car for yourself yah?=) If you are concern about what others think then perhaps better to do a poll with your future colleagues and buy the statistically most popular car if popularity and image is your concern?
Rumboo 05-28-2007, 01:53 PM rx8 beng?!! Eh, rx8 2nd favourite car of gay ppl (australia survey). Audi tt was first. I dun think ah beng will touch it after that.
CoMBo8 05-28-2007, 03:55 PM not really matter what is beng car and what is not. your money, your choice. :)
I agree totally. Your money, your choice. And actually, any car can become beng... just add beng stickers, beng-looking body kits, etc. But who cares? It's your car, enjoy it and love it! :)
regret 05-28-2007, 11:11 PM l think so too....where to find a sports car so chio and not tat ex??
