View Full Version : Infiniti G37 dyno results
RX8-79 05-21-2007, 02:44 PM The lastest weapon fired into the HP war....the G37; 287 hp @ 7300 rpm, 236 lb-ft @ 4400 rpm, versus 236 hp, 218 lb-ft, for the outgoing G35.

The G37's engine, however, blows that performance away. It's rated 37 horsepower higher, but the G37 we tested put 51 more horses [than the G35 coupe] to the rear wheels. Since this was measured on a chassis dyno, we can't know for sure how much of that increase is due to higher engine output versus lower driveline losses. However, since the drivelines are similar, we'd guess nearly all of this increase is brute force from the new motor. Think about it this way: If frictional losses are a constant percentage, you'd have to add 63 horsepower to the G35's engine to make it put 51 more to its wheels. This is a big, big jump in power.
The best news is that Infiniti wasn't exaggerating about its other claims: the new 3.7-liter is stronger than the 3.5 both at low revs and high revs. Its torque curve is flatter, too. Throttle response (if you can say that about a car without a throttle) is instantaneous, the 3.5's coarseness has been tamed, and I got an indicated 27 mpg - with the air conditioning switched on at 80 mph - on the way back from the dyno shop. So if there's any drawback to VVEL, we haven't seen it.

NgoRX8 05-21-2007, 02:52 PM damn...
Nemesis8 05-21-2007, 02:53 PM Nice torque shelf indeed
CarAndDriver 05-21-2007, 02:55 PM Wow....the HP wars continue.
More_Revs 05-21-2007, 03:12 PM yes, indeed....but I wonder how far would would this war go with the current gas price.
SlowLude 05-21-2007, 03:37 PM Don't worry, innovation will kick in and they'll find a way around it. The beauty of competition in a free market.

alfy28 05-21-2007, 03:40 PM wow
is a shame that the automatic rx8 has 130whp

hmm doesnt that suck so the g37 dynos @21 more hp at the wheels than we have at the crank and gets better gas mileage.... oh well.
r0tor 05-21-2007, 03:54 PM too bad the G37coupe became a fatass...

It's more like 55 hp more than the '8 has at the crank, but it's also a variant of an engine Nissan makes huge quantities of that they've had an additional 4 years to develop over the Renesis. This engine isn't even direct injected yet and it's putting out very good power and fuel economy numbers, Nissan's done a great job developing the VQ and pushing the limits of what they can do with engine while keeping it affordable. Hopefully Mazda continues to advance the rotary in the same way and put out an even better version of the engine at some point over the next few years.
350zFan 05-21-2007, 06:05 PM True, but atleast they're packing the balls/muscle to move that weight around though.
too bad the G37coupe became a fatass...
abbid 05-21-2007, 06:12 PM note to self: dont toy with new g37. Not even when[if] I get turbo.
dillsrotary 05-21-2007, 07:23 PM to bad it doesn't look like the concept.
r0tor 05-21-2007, 07:31 PM True, but atleast they're packing the balls/muscle to move that weight around though.
at only a few pounds short of 3,700lbs it hardly has any power to weight ratio advantage over the outgoing model and probably should have a V8 to haul its fatass around :puke:
therm8 05-21-2007, 07:41 PM at only a few pounds short of 3,700lbs it now needs a V8 to haul its fatass around
Yep. I'd expect only a slightly faster car than the previous version. That's damn near the weight of the GTO and upcoming G8(both of which sport some real power, and high quality interiors, exteriors, and amenities at a comparable price), not to mention several luxury models from various brands (almost all of which do it better). And the premium price on the G series is hardly worth it in my opinion. But then I've never been much of a fan of Nissan. The VQxx does sound good though. The only saving grace for Nissan is the rwd chassis.
XDEEDUBBX 05-21-2007, 07:55 PM i hope no one says

No shit.
I wonder what a Stillen blower will do to that bad boy.
Raptor2k 05-21-2007, 08:17 PM And the 2008 RX-8 gets new colors.

Everything is realtive. 330 hp will do a good job hauling around 3,700 lbs. Each horsey will be moving only 11.2 lbs. Our RX-8s would be moving 13 lbs per hp. Considering the Renisis is overrated (power wise) and the VQ underrated the difference is probably greater. Who's the fatass now?
FWIW: Lotus Elise 1984 lbs and 190 hp. Just over 10 lbs per hp!
Mikeluvs8 05-21-2007, 08:58 PM weak! :)
playdoh43 05-21-2007, 09:42 PM being a g35 owner i really like what they've done to the g37, its an improvement in almost every way. please remember that its not a pure sports car to begin with.
but to be honest, if im in the market to get a car next year or the year after, id probably go with the even more impressive 335i twin turbo coupe, unless the G37 is dramatically cheaper, like at least 5k cheaper. even though it has 30 less hp, the bmw is so much cheaper to tune.
Id be interesting to see how they fare stock vs stock, i imagine itd be close, they are around the same weight, bmw has more torque while infiniti has more power.

Automobile Review (http://www.automobilemag.com/auto_shows/2007_new_york/0703_2008_infiniti_g37_coupe/index1.html)
Neither provides very detailed numbers, but the comments made on how the cars stack up are pretty interesting.
playdoh43 05-21-2007, 10:07 PM cool, nice reads pck. what im really looking forward to is when BMI race them at tsukuba
lesper4 05-21-2007, 10:56 PM nice numbers but i still like what i got.

High quality interiors?! :uhh: Is there some special edition GTO I don't know about?

Automobile liked it better than the 335i coupe...
CarAndDriver 05-22-2007, 12:44 AM We'll see about the new MSRP....
Japan8 05-22-2007, 12:53 AM Just like the sedan... it'll be close to that of the outgoing model...
brillo 05-22-2007, 10:46 AM very impressed with the engine. Not impressed with the weight. I'm starting to sound like a broken record.......
PoorCollegeKid 05-22-2007, 12:06 PM very impressed with the engine. Not impressed with the weight. I'm starting to sound like a broken record.......
:yesnod: Hopefully the Z that gets this engine will be significantly lighter than the G37.
delhi 05-22-2007, 12:09 PM will it change it's name to 370Z then?
the new G cars are a good improvements over the first gen in the interior dept. Something that irked me as a so-called premium brand.
Steiner 05-24-2007, 02:20 AM I think the VQ37 is basically just a stroked VQ35. Gotta love that curve though. I need one of the bad boys for my wife's FX35.
