View Full Version : Question Rems31 04-20-2007, 09:46 AM How come some threads get a 'Search noob!' response while others actually get their similar question answered? Trekk 04-20-2007, 10:01 AM Some people never learnd. "If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything"? Also people like to do it for extra post counts. reaper1 04-20-2007, 10:09 AM How come some threads get a 'Search noob!' response while others actually get their similar question answered? GO SEARCH ! CTrx8 04-20-2007, 10:35 AM depends on mood, who's on to answer, how much the OP really seemed to look. but mainly just mood. Redpit10 04-20-2007, 11:38 AM Depends on who answers first I feel. You get the kind of person to say search, and then you get tons of others who jump on the bandwagon. Or you get the person who gives you a good answer and then others come and jump on that bandwagon. Its the whole group mentality thing. Plus there are always a few "forum leaders" who everybody praises and just follows blindly. Happens on all forums. dmc27 04-20-2007, 12:07 PM I concur. Herd mentality - if a search nazi posts first it runs that way, if not you get answers. For the most part the questions get answered either way, and it just becomes a matter of how much negative crap gets in the thread. Tho the atmosphere here seems a bit more relaxed over the last year. But you just never know - it def. depends on mood to some extent. oh, and BTW - DIAF n00b!! :beerchug: dillsrotary 04-20-2007, 12:13 PM I usually follow the phases of the moon. This closer we get to a full moon the more "search N00b!!!" answers you'll get. Seriously its a proving fact. dmc27 04-20-2007, 12:21 PM ^nah. That's just your monthly cycle. Krankor 04-20-2007, 04:14 PM Pathetic, really, that there's still such a herd mentality, even within a group which, pretty much by definition, is made up of individualists. One doesn't buy an RX-8 to go along with the crowd. shaunv74 04-20-2007, 04:25 PM I have a mental graph in my head with idiocy of the question on one axis and attitude of the person on the other axis. As the idiocy of the question increases I am more likely to get pissy and throw the ol' search card. If they have a fairly honest question that they could probably find searching then I'll give them my answer and tell them to search for more. As the attitude and sense of entitlement of the poster gets worse then I am more apt. to throw the search card. If I feel like someone shows up brand new and expects everyone to spoon feed them answers, refuses to search on their own with comments like "I ain't got time yo!" Then I'm more inclined to flame them and throw the search card. That and if they get really uppity then I move in and try and score a thread kill... :evil_laug Icemark 04-20-2007, 04:37 PM This thread should have been posted in the lounge or something... as it is not really RX-8 related. Krankor 04-20-2007, 04:43 PM This thread should have been posted in the lounge or something... as it is not really RX-8 related.I disagree. It is (presumeably) about the way questions are answered (or not) in *this* space. It is not an RX-8 discussion, but it is an "RX-8 Discussion" discussion. In any case, I would never suffer anyone to have to post in the lounge. Icemark 04-20-2007, 04:46 PM ah... see I always figured this section was just for discussing RX-8s... and not forum operations/manners (or Zcars, or VIN checks, or fake rotary engines, or...) Krankor 04-20-2007, 05:08 PM If you have a question about how things work in "RX-8 Discussion" and want to get an answer from the people who actually participate on "RX-8 Discussion", then where else are you supposed to post it? swoope 04-20-2007, 05:16 PM tone of the op, and if they even tried to read anything.. beers  limepro 04-20-2007, 05:23 PM How come some threads get a 'Search noob!' response while others actually get their similar question answered? search noob!!! jk i think its because most of the time theres 1 million+ threads on topics such as MPG. shazbot28 04-20-2007, 05:26 PM tone of the op, and if they even tried to read anything.. beers  +1... DarkBrew 04-20-2007, 06:29 PM Some noobs ask good questions. Some noobs know how to search. Some noobs research before they purchase. Some noobs just never learn. Mazurfer 04-20-2007, 06:39 PM Some noobs ask good questions. Some noobs know how to search. Some noobs research before they purchase. Some noobs just never learn. Came out of nowhere and like *Yo watz go for my car to make it fast to pwn 350z~?* Its your own god damn car so find the answers your own god damn self, do your own homework, search for god's sake, same question has been answered like 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 times. shazbot28 04-21-2007, 02:53 AM How come some threads get a 'Search noob!' response while others actually get their similar question answered? Use the search function for this question! omg jeeze... :hahano: j/k :yelrotflm Shinka-Dono 04-21-2007, 03:02 AM Pathetic, really, that there's still such a herd mentality, even within a group which, pretty much by definition, is made up of individualists. One doesn't buy an RX-8 to go along with the crowd. What if going against the herd is mentally handicapped? Individualism for its own sake is not a virtue. (Neither is blindly following the lead of others, which was your point I'm sure; I'm just being a pain in the ass.) :) Krankor 05-02-2007, 02:02 AM What if going against the herd is mentally handicapped? Individualism for its own sake is not a virtue.Nor is individualism for its own sake individualism. Individualism means making your own independent judgement, regardless of what the crowd says. It doesn't mean automatically bucking the crowd, that's just herdishness in the opposite direction. Learn what individualism is before you start criticizing it. (Neither is blindly following the lead of others, which was your point I'm sure; I'm just being a pain in the ass.) :)You sure are! Rems31 06-04-2007, 09:25 AM You can tell summer's here cuz all the new (potential) owners posting questions... Shinka-Dono 06-04-2007, 09:43 AM Nor is individualism for its own sake individualism. Individualism means making your own independent judgement, regardless of what the crowd says. It doesn't mean automatically bucking the crowd, that's just herdishness in the opposite direction. Learn what individualism is before you start criticizing it. I'm not criticizing individualism. Just entertaining the possibility that an individual can make a decision, regardless of what the crowd says, and be wrong. Automatically disagreeing with the crowd wasn't my point. Holy delayed response Batman. I blame the OP. If he hadn't searched and found this thread again, none of this would've happened. Too much searching going on at this site.:icon_no2: Rems31 06-04-2007, 10:04 AM I'm not criticizing individualism. Holy delayed response Batman. I blame the OP. If he hadn't searched and found this thread again, none of this would've happened. Too much searching going on at this site.:icon_no2: How dare you accuse me of searching?!?! Anyways, I just thought I'd bring this thread back to life since there's a lot of flaming going on with all these new posts. Trying to get people to think again about how they respond to new threads and why they do so in the manner they do. StewC625 06-04-2007, 10:13 AM It is all about how the quality of the question is asked and whether I think it's some idiot who knows nothing about the car trying to stir a hornets nest like "I hear these cars need new engines after 30k miles or a stupid question like "I have a Saturn Ion Redline right now and I think I want an RX-8 to drift with". If it's legitmately a new owner, and they are interested in learning and the question is well framed and formed, I'll answer them. Bottom line, if the OP sounds like a tool, I'll put on my "tool" hat and be a tool right back. dmc27 06-04-2007, 10:50 AM The site is not exactly 100% effective at placing FAQs and other "stuff every new member should read" in places that make it obvious for the new member to FIND. Kinda like this one (http://www.rx8club.com/showthread.php?t=114988) (and the others at the top of the lounge) Rems31 06-04-2007, 11:00 AM Make them take a quiz before their first post. Like this one. I have a question. I should a) Start a new thread with my question. b) Search for answers first. c) Buy a crossfire. If they get it wrong, their post will be denied. CarAndDriver 06-04-2007, 11:42 AM I agree with the post about the credibility of the poster and question. If it looks like some thought, care, and searching went into the noob post, I'm more likely to answer. Some people are just gullible. jskup1 06-04-2007, 12:04 PM My car doesn't get the mpg which was posted on the window sticker. Shinka-Dono 06-04-2007, 01:31 PM All the engines are failing. ...and the elves are receding into the west. StewC625 06-04-2007, 01:33 PM All the leaves are brown, and the sky is grey ... chickenwafer 06-04-2007, 01:35 PM you can tell if the newbie asking the question has done their homework or not. I'm sorry but if someone with 1 post and just joined comes and askes a question like, "I want an RX8, but I hear I will have to replace the engine after 30,000 miles. Is this true?" Or the other classic, "I just got an RX-8 and I'm only getting like 15 or 16 MPG is this normal? Will the dealership fix it for me under warranty or will I have to pay for it cuz yalls know I'm broke LOL LOL LOL" no one here is going to take tho that kindly. Not to mention it proves how purely stupid and young the OP is. And it seems that we have an invasion of sorts of the younger demographic who is much slower and not as informed as our previous younger dempgraphics (me included, I'm a youngen). Because our previous younger owners had to have the green to get the car, but now the RX8 is cheaper in the used car market, so a lot of 16-19 year olds are getting them either a) their own money they saved from mowing lawns, or b) mommy and daddy are paying for it. And most of the kids aren't doing their homework and just ask stupid, ridicilous, and over-asked questions and expect a nice warm welcome. It ain't gonna happen. I seriously think this forum should adapt a rule so a person who just joins can not post a new thread until they hit near 20 posts of something along those lines. Maybe it would cut down on stupid ass threads. Rems31 06-04-2007, 01:41 PM Yea I think when it's your own money and you're looking to buy a car, you're more inclined (at least the smart ones) to research it before you buy it. But then again they come here to do their research and they get flamed for not searching through the forum. rotarygod 06-04-2007, 01:52 PM How come some threads get a 'Search noob!' response while others actually get their similar question answered? Because the one's that get the search noob response are the ones that I haven't gotten around to banning people over and the ones that do get responded to are those that I've cleaned up and deleted many of the useless posts. We've got a HUGE problem with people being dicks to new members and warnings have been going out all day to various people who care more about their post count going up rather than giving a person a useful answer. Let's face it, our search feature is fairly limited. The next actions against people that are warned will be 3 day bannings. If people can't be nice, they need to leave until they can be. Be nice to the new people. If you can't answer the question, DON'T! eblvabch 06-04-2007, 03:39 PM Most the posts that come up when you search just end with someone saying do a search nycgps 06-04-2007, 03:56 PM Search noob! Huskyfan23 06-04-2007, 07:18 PM How come some threads get a 'Search noob!' response while others actually get their similar question answered? It all depends who hits it first. If Stew or Car and Driver hit it first, you can guarantee it's a "S-E-A-R-C-H" type of response. Car and Driver loves those types of threads, because he can add on to his post count with minimal effort. If people who aren't arrogant hit it first, the question normally gets answered. Imagine how dead this forum (or any forum relating to cars) would be if there weren't new people asking questions? It would be a bunch of regulars sitting around with nothing to talk about. StewC625 06-04-2007, 08:36 PM As stated before: 1) When someone asks a good question, I'll give a good answer. 2) When some knowitall new owner who doesn't know what they are talking about says something that isn't correct or true or proven in long term ownership, I will take a stand against what they said and introduce my own opinion and experience. I admit my tone has been testy of late, but there are also just too many folks out there, and you know who you are, who spout crap like its fact, and I like to correct those wrongs. I reserve that for posters like NoTears, DarkBrew and swoope. Like I said before, I have no problem with criticism as long as it's done in a respectable manner. And I am completely done flaming anyone (Car and Driver, you, etc) and am going to give advice which I am knowledgable about.....claims and insurance related issues. Huskyfan23 06-06-2007, 09:30 PM Okay, all settled. cool rotarygod 06-06-2007, 10:54 PM There have been a few instances in the past week where the first dozen responses to an innocent and uneducated question have been rude. I've deleted many of these posts and have waited for people like C@D or Stew to give a proper diplomatic response. Once that happens, most responses after that point usually stay equally diplomatic. Once even one person starts to criticize, everyone else afterwards do too. This needs to stop. I will continue to delete posts like this and hand out warnings or points if necessary and sometimes I'll just go in and edit your post. Depending on my mood you never know what I'll make it look like you said! Remember the system no longer shows that a mod has edited posts. Be nice to new people. If you can't respond in any way other than "search", DO NOT POST! Let it go and move on. If you want to tell someone to search you need to be nice about it. Typing search is WORTHLESS! Give these people a brief on topic response as a valid answer to their question. Just enough to tell them something. You don't need to go into detail. Then nicely suggest that they run a search for more information on the subject. This is the proper way to do it and it will ensure that they come back. You just never know, some of these people might really be able to contribute in big ways in the future. We don't just want the people with really thick skin in here. We don't have a hazing ritual of initiation. We are an information forum and that's what many people come here for. Please be nice or be quiet. |
