i looked around a little and i don't see anything there that says RX-8. got a more direct link?

they dont have anything for the RX8, just wondered will they come up with anything for the 8

WHo will come out with an ECU upgrade, Mazda or third party?

BTW: Pardon the silly ?? but what does CEL refer to? I have read this on several threads and do not know what it means.

CEL is Check Engine Light.

It's just a matter of time before the tuners sort out the ECU in the RX-8 and start creating new programs. I believe there's even one Subaru tuner that can re-program an ECU just by plugging a controller into the OBD-II port, and I believe the same will be possible with the '8.

It will take time, but there's gonna be a HUGE aftermarket for the '8.

Pardon this other newbie question:

When ECU modifications become available, are these mods only for those who want to go beyond what Mazda had intended for the car and therefore one would forfeit any warranty in the process of such a modification?

Should other people, like me, who are interested in maximizing performance of the car for on road use, without killing gas milage and the warranty in the proccess, also be looking intor such a modificaton?

If yes to the latter, how does one deal with the scheduled tune-up at the dealer?

Approximately how much does something like this cost?

...there is a problem with this mentality. you can go highER performance and possibly not "kill" whatever milage the 13BMSP can muster (performance is 100% about maximization of comprimises), but ALSO saving the warranty?? there isn't anything you can do unless you change it back and forth for service (without the slightest indication that you're trying to fraud them). if you're really curious, go to your dealership (the guys who're actually honouring your warranty) and ask them,
"if i do this, and get you guys to install it if i have to, will you still honour my warranty, or not?"

i don't have experience with ownership, so others i'm sure will chip in with their experiences.

hmmm i think that if you would like to retain your warranty, the best route to take with ecu tuning would be a reflash since u keep the stock ecu but the maps are changed(I doubt a dealer would be able to notice it). Although this is not the most efficient form of engine management, a LOT of wrx owners swear by it. Hopefully the rx-8 aftermarket will be offering ECU reflashes.

I emailed them to ask about ECU for RX-8.
"As the subject says I am interested in an ECU for a Mazda RX-8
Any news?"

Here is what they said:

"We are at final stage of ECU R&D at this point.
We will be working on tuning the car very soon if everything goes well.
Please check our web site sometimes for update."

So I asked:
"Great.
So, some questions:
1) What is the best method for purchasing from you?
2) Planned price?
3) What is required to install this?

4) Any quick estimates as to performance characteristics?"

And they replied:

"We will be releasing more information as soon as available.

Interestingly, they have an article in there (page 4) that says Mazda just released a new ECU flash for the Protoge. The new flash boasts as much as 10% increase in performance around 3500 and 5000 RPMs.

Now, if Mazda was to release the same kind of flash for the RX8 (as the article speculates they will do), it may not be as tuned as an aftermarket flash, but it will still keep everyone in warranty right?

The MSP flash has been out for a while. It corrects a rich run condition.

It does not add 10% more (horse)power, rather that performance gain is only torque.

We can all do with some more torque!
