DIY DIY! Aipex8 04-12-2007, 02:35 AM Wow! Looks really good (just like my photoshop ;)) I'll take a set. Any pics comparing the LEDs to stock? Just one thing left: front parking lights. I figure you can fit six in a circle with one in the center. White LEDs would look great with your HID head and fog lights. XDEEDUBBX 04-12-2007, 02:37 AM wow man, they look sick....cant wait to see them on sunday! thebiggdaddy 04-12-2007, 02:45 AM god damn, that's fuckin sick. Rotary Rasp 04-12-2007, 02:47 AM Wow! I figure you can fit six in a circle with one in the center. White LEDs would look great with your HID head and fog lights.Yea, it's gonna be hard to do because it is such a bitch to get back there. I have all the parts already. I think i'm going to start on my led puddle light project next. Then do the front parking lights. NgoRX8 04-12-2007, 02:59 AM that... is... awesome! Rotary Rasp 04-12-2007, 03:32 AM If anyone was wondering, I wrote the 'LED' and 'RX8' with a led flash light in the last two pictures. MissyK 04-12-2007, 04:06 AM Holy Moly!! THEM SOME HOT PIX love them!! scsi 04-12-2007, 04:19 AM dont forget some day pics tomorrow :D c41250n 04-12-2007, 04:33 AM that is sick, will you make one for me if i pay you? Rasp, the masses have arrived! he he he u called that one MrToeknee 04-12-2007, 12:11 PM Wow! Looks as if the 8 should've came like that! Great job! I'm surprised you didn't LED the rear bumper rotor. Rotary Rasp 04-12-2007, 12:22 PM Here is a close up without any lights on: http://www.rx8club.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=98148&stc=1 It looks very stock. Even up close you'd think it was oem, unless you own a rx-8. My coworker has a mazda3 and he thought my lights were stock. Rotary Rasp 04-12-2007, 12:26 PM that is sick, will you make one for me if i pay you?I am considering making a few more sets, however, nothing is for sure yet. It depends a lot on member interest. I'll take some day shots when I get off work. FE3P 04-12-2007, 12:42 PM WOW... nice job Rasp! I agree, the 8 should have come stock this way! :) Aipex8 04-12-2007, 01:09 PM If you would consider doing them in a chrome finish I would paypal you right now :). Off topic: what color temp headlights are you running now? Also what brand bulb are you using? I'm thinking of getting some 6000K bulbs, but am undecided on whether I want to drop $200 on Philips or take my chances with a cheaper brand. EDIT: I saw in your sig that the headlights are 6000K, they look perfect. Still wondering what brand you are running though and if you've had any problems with them. Jedi54 04-12-2007, 01:11 PM holy smokes Rodger, that looks freaking HAWT! Can't wait to see them in person... EDIT: I saw in your sig that the headlights are 6000K, they look perfect. Still wondering what brand you are running though and if you've had any problems with them.I'm running 5000k (ebay) for the fogs and some Philips DL35's for the head lights. I used to have 6000k. For some reason I can't change my sig. It would be very easy to use another color instaed of black. Just a matter buying the formica or painting it. I'm pretty sure you can already buy chrome formica. scsi 04-12-2007, 03:20 PM howcome you went with a black backing for the tails and 3rd brake, instead of painting them red, or even some red foil finish? Rotary Rasp 04-12-2007, 03:37 PM howcome you went with a black backing for the tails and 3rd brake, instead of painting them red, or even some red foil finish?I dunno. Honestly, you can't even tell unless you're six inches away. You'll see when I post some day shots. Mafia 04-12-2007, 07:14 PM if you were to make a few more sets, would you be selling the whole light assembly or just the boards for us to install? scsi 04-12-2007, 07:27 PM the passenger side light has they lock assembly in it right? is that interchangeable between lights? scremn8 04-12-2007, 07:40 PM there is no lock on his paasenger side... '87 Turbo II 04-12-2007, 07:45 PM Do the rear turn signals, and reverse lights as well. Hell do a full LED conversion, interior lights and all. I think an interesting idea would be a plate full of LEDs feeding a bundle of fiber optic cables, each end gathering light from a bulb then meeting up to form a tight bundle, with a ligthyl fogged piece of glass behind the clear exterior glass. I think it'd look awesome. The LED reaction time, without the "Dot" look. Just a really bright solid red circle. Only problem is it'd take up some trunk space to have room for all of that. Rotary Rasp 04-12-2007, 08:14 PM the passenger side light has they lock assembly in it right? is that interchangeable between lights?I installed a camera where my key was. Either way, it's just a hole in the tail light. The key unit is mounted on the car so no special modification was required to the tail lights. Rotary Rasp 04-12-2007, 08:15 PM if you were to make a few more sets, would you be selling the whole light assembly or just the boards for us to install?I dont know, I don't have any more sets of tail lights at the moment. I'd have to do an ebay hunt first. I do have plenty of leds..... The two circuit boards are identical. Do you think people would be interested in buying just the completed circuit board? coastie08 04-12-2007, 08:15 PM Nice conversion, very clean! Rotary Rasp 04-12-2007, 08:20 PM Do the rear turn signals, and reverse lights as well. Hell do a full LED conversion, interior lights and all. I think it'd look awesome. The LED reaction time, without the "Dot" look. Just a really bright solid red circle. Only problem is it'd take up some trunk space to have room for all of that.Well, that is an interesting thought. I think the new bmw 6 series does something like that. As for the rest of the car? I've already completed the interior, license plate, trunk light, and glove box light. As a matter of fact, the only thing left is the reverse lights and turn signals. x-ped 04-12-2007, 08:36 PM Holy smokes thats hott! Whats the turn around time to complete a pair of tail lights? WoodsOfGreenRx8 04-12-2007, 09:17 PM Sounds crazy, but you should try & sell a few sets.. Think I would grab at em.. Also, sell a completed set.. Like a bag o bulbs for the interior, so people could just order an interior set in blue.. which is what Id like to do.. MaddHatter00 04-12-2007, 10:50 PM Looks very clean!! I'd be all over them if you were to sell a set. i would want the whole light assembly just to make it easier of a swap. If you sell the boards and the leds what would be the cost? Install instructions included? Rotary Rasp 04-12-2007, 11:01 PM I think I need to contact a mod before I say anything about prices. d j 04-13-2007, 12:03 AM looks real sharp! are you gonna convert the rear signal lights and reverse lights to LED's as well? Cody Red 04-13-2007, 12:24 AM I'm loving the conversion. Looks pretty tight. Not to hi-jack your thread, but what kinda camera are you using? -Cody Rotary Rasp 04-13-2007, 12:34 AM I'm loving the conversion. Looks pretty tight. MaddHatter00 04-13-2007, 09:08 AM I think I need to contact a mod before I say anything about prices. After you contact a mod let me know. I'm first on the list. English 04-13-2007, 02:52 PM I installed a camera where my key was. Either way, it's just a hole in the tail light. The key unit is mounted on the car so no special modification was required to the tail lights. So what kind of camera, and viewing system do you have? What do you see back there? Topless ladies??? :Eyecrazy: Tayler 04-13-2007, 03:14 PM Wow looks great! I'd be all over a set of those if the price was somewhat reasonable. '87 Turbo II 04-13-2007, 04:28 PM The D200 is nice but this isn't low dispersion glass in this lens, you can see the LED reverberation on the lens elements (the ghost led lights near the exhaust pipes on the straight back pic) wwiifanatic 04-14-2007, 05:41 AM I registered (being the owner of the camera and the photographer for these pics) just to say that you're wrong about the lens. It's a 17-35 f/2.8 ED-IF AF-S. That is low dispersion glass. Doesn't mean it's flare, relection, or reverberation proof. I defend the honor of my equipment! Groundrush 04-14-2007, 10:05 AM Awesome man. You previously asked if folks would be interested in just purchasing the circuit boards...I certainly would, as long as there were decent instructions on installation. If it's too much of a PITA, I think most folks would lean towards just swapping out the tails completely. Fortunately for me, I also have a Miata, so could pull my tails and ship them for the conversion. Tasty! Also, Woodsofgreen's idea for selling full lighting kits was a great one! Dunno if it's my eyes or not, but did you also replace the LEDs in the twin marker lights at each corner of the tails? They look brighter to me than stock, but it could just be the camera... Rotary Rasp 04-14-2007, 11:31 AM So what kind of camera, and viewing system do you have? What do you see back there? Topless ladies??? :Eyecrazy:It's a 120 degree reverse image camera. Check out my website. http://www.trickrx8.com Rotary Rasp 04-14-2007, 11:45 AM Yesterday I started on a second pair of tail lights. These are the pair that were on my car before. I wanted to time myself and see just how long it would take. I'm not done yet but I can tell already that selling complete tail lights is not feasible. It just takes too long do. Cutting the back of the tail light and making the formica piece count for a large amount of the time involved. This second pair is slightly different than the first, from the exterior, the units are identical. The main difference is that I used a hot knife to cut the tail light. This means that I can reuse the original plastic. On the first set the back of the unit was sealed with 1/16 industrial rubber. Another change resides in the circuitry, this unit will have a slightly more complex system. In theory, it will keep the tail lights from dimming when the car is started. This means that I will have one pair of complete tail lights for sale. As of right now, there is a good possibility that I will sell just the circuit board. This way people don't have to ship out there tail lights. And he or she can choose whatever color he or she wants for the mounting plate. (It seems some people objected to my choice of gloss black.) And lastly, the pictures are flawless to my eyes, and that's all that matters. malfere2 04-14-2007, 12:01 PM Took a look at your website....I didnt realize you were the one that did the back up camera in the key hole and the HID Fogs. Both really sick upgrades BTW  Rotary Rasp 04-14-2007, 12:25 PM Thanks for the compliments about my site. Rotary Rasp 04-18-2007, 03:11 AM Rodger, with our recent weather here in Cali, did you get any fogging on the rear lenses?Nope. I've been keeping a close eye on them just in case. I've washed the car twice since installing them. Both times I hit the lights pretty good from all directions with the hose. So far everything is dandy. Rotary Rasp 04-18-2007, 03:12 AM The pictures above were actually taken right after I washed the car, hence the wet pavement. Jedi54 04-18-2007, 03:02 PM looks pretty slick |
