View Full Version : Data Logged on Speed?

I don't know if you guys know this but in the 3rd gen Rx-7's that the top speed and data is stored in the ECU and could be pulled out of the ECU by the factory service.

I wouldn't doubt that the Rx-8 has the same capabilities or more, so watch out when you go for servicing for your 8 at Mazda. Either that or maybe a good read of the warranty is in order.

I just thought about this as everyone seems to be posting their high speed run speeds.

Just something to keep in mind.

Well then, everyone should go do a nice run in 5th on a dyno.
I know Redshift has a nice picture of his dash with the tach somewhere around redline showing 248 km/h. :D

Seriously, if Mazda tries to do anything about your max speed stored in the ECU, just tell them you dynoed the car because of the HP fiasco.

How/why would Mazda deny any claims because of top speed? I can understand if you overrevved the engine but otherwise you did not do anything that the car was not designed to do.

Just trying to keep you on your toes for warranty! Mazda might give you the ol' excess wear and tear or something like that.

But Jasper has the right idea!

I read somewhere (old age makes it foggy) that BMW ties the warranty to how many hard starts are performed on the car. Somehow, it tracks these and this information can be pulled out if required.

This puts a whole new twist on Big Brother is watching...
