View Full Version : Loud thrashing noise

Yesterday I started hearing a loud thrashing noise when I get above 6K or so. It doesn't happen every time though. The best way to describe it is it sounds like a piece of sheet metal rattling loose or hitting something. It doesn't sound good at all.

Anyone else getting this? I have 2600 miles on the car BTW.

oops forgot that. It seems to be coming from the engine or just behind it.

This post is kind of funny because I believe this is the same sound that other owners are equating to the "chip flip". That magical point where the ECU decides to change its fuel maps and give you back the missing horsepower. ;)

My car developed this slight metalic rattle and louder exhaust at around 3,000 miles. I'm now up to 6,000 miles and I haven't seen any change in power, mileage, oil usage, etc... So I wouldn't be to worried about it.

I too had this noise. My engine is now being replaced. Please dont freak out, Mazda has admitted that its a one off.

Please read my post on how my engine was the FIRST RENESIS TO GO POP!

Funny this is exactly what I was going to say, it sounded like valves thrashing. My Jet-Ski made this noise just before it blew up...no valves there either.

bump, i had the same rattling noise tonight going over 6k. I also own an automatic transmission, just wondering if you guys figured out what the problem is. Gonna bring it to the dealer this weekend.

Slight, faint metallic rattle at exactly 6250rpm?

$50 says its part of the complicated intake setup on the car. Look at a chart of when all of the different stages come online and I am positive ;) that you will see something happening at precisely that rpm.

I have heard the noise on my car. Its faint, and most people probably wouldn't even notice it. Let me know when everyones car starts blowing engines and *then* I'll worry. :p

It could be a rattling cat converter screen also.

I hear the same noise but I hear it at around 6000 rpm and also at 7000 rpm depending on which gear i'm in. I've been hearing it for about 2 weeks. Performance doesn't seem affected but it's not an attractive sound to come from an engine. I thought I was the only one who had this problem. I'm due for an oil change, will inquire. If anyone else has any experience with this issue with their service dept. please inform.

The car is equipped with variable intake runners that change lengths...may be the whistle??

hmm
I saw this post about a thrashing noise. Almost three weeks ago I started the car in the garage and the normal whirring noise was accompanied by another sound. It was definitely associated with engine rev. I waited for a moment and then drove off the sound increased with engine noise. I just drove. It quit as I continued to drive. I had about 3070 miles. One thing that has seemed to have changed is the oil consumption has slowed. I went to add my half quart or so yesterday as I have since new and it did not need it! I have not heard the sound since and the car is running fine.

Mines a 6MT 228bhp. Done just over 1000 miles and was having alittle bit of fun with it. Went over 6000rpm and there was a sound like a ball-bearing being rattled around just behind the centre console. I immeadiatly eased off and the noise stopped. Accelerated a little later on and the same thing happened.

The noise is very loud and sound mechanical in nature.

Hasn't happened since though; was it due to the fact that this was the first time for the car over 6000rpm or is that just me being stupid and optimistic??

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers

I've had it happen to me for quite some time now. My only guess on it is that you have to drive the car a little more for it to warm up and then try to go up to 6000rpm and see if it still does the same. I bought mine into the dealer and wasnt able to replicate the sound for the mechanic. It happens sometimes.

Mine did that on the last tank of gas I ran thru it. It was regular gas and it sounded like someone pelting a garbage can with marbles! I put mid grade in it and it stopped! This was an experiment that was prompeted by someone posting that they got better mpg when running regular gas.

I won't go thru that again!

Cheers Fellas.

Who knows what it is then?? Does indeed sound like a garbage can being hit by marbles, loud too!!

The car was warm at the time and was running on 95RON petrol.

That sound made my blood run cold................thought I'd killed the bloody thing, it sought of sounds as though it could be catastrophic.

if someone can bring their car to the dealer and replicate the sound for them itll be greatly appreciated. It is embarassing to take the car to redline and the passengers think something is wrong with it.

The sound you describe sounds like engine knock/detonation... If it's something that you can reproduce I'd definately take it to the dealer to take a look at since, if it is knock, it can damage your engine.

dealers wont do shit unless u can replicate the sound for them
