Well....almost 3 years of amazing times and incredible fun are now at an end...

Insrance called today to say she's totalled. So what happened?!?!

Simply this... Going about 90 around a curve on the Freeway, Rear slipped out, corrected to avoid center divider, and flung right to the offramp. Car impacted the guard rail and slid along the rail with the nose burried in it....
Front wheel flew off and ended up a quarter mile down the road resting up against the center divider. I was alone, at night, and no other parties involved....

Walked out without a scratch, not even a bruise or stiffness the next few days. Thanks Mazda R&D!!!

Lesson Learned: When ZR rated tires say the reccommended life of the tire is 25,000 miles... dont wait until 50,000mi to CONSIDER changing them...

To all my friends from the Malibu Cruz group and Those in the OC and LAX clubs.... It has been fun, I will catch u on the Flip Side!

omg, those pictures are horrific! Dan, I'm glad to hear that you were able to walk away from it without any injuries, that's definitely the most important part.
Bummer you won't be able to make it out to Malibu anymore.

Wow Dan....glad to hear you're okay. Thank goodness that didn't happen on a Malibu run! I did one a couple years ago and loved it, and I never even thought of my tires! You still have the '54 Chevy? (I remember you got a 50-something Chevy when you took off for school)

For everyone's information: In the case of oversteer ("Rear slipped out") keep your foot on the gas or even add more power. This will shift the weight towards the back of the car an increase normal force on your rear tires contact patches. I've seen a lot of spin outs because people either let off the gas too fast or stabbed at their brakes. Doing so just exaserbates lift off oversteer.

Nice pictures though, surprised you were in sound enough state to take them. Are you sure those tires aren't racing slicks?

I have been through many track days including the BMW- M performance driving school. I think thats the only reason i ended up on the shoulder and unscathed. I didnt touch the brakes at all... Just guided the car as best i could with no traction and the stupid guard rail got in my way... lol

But good advice non the less ^^^

Glad to hear you are ok Dan. Was it raining? or did the windshield wipers come on in the process of correcting the spin?

sorry to hear man...makes you kinda reflect back on some of the driving we did on those first couple Malibu cruises....

I'm glad we were always safe and that nothing bad ever happened. Glad you made it out alright. Thank Mazda R/D, for sure.

Did any of the air bags deploy? Can't really see them from the shots you've shared. Have you checked with your insurance company to find the purchase price for the car...maybe part it out...or is that just one hassle you don't have access to since it was a lease?

HAHA...no
No rain, but you know, i dont know how they came on... prob the impact knocked the lever. Not the first time i have seen f-ed-up cars with the wipers up :)

AdictiveRx

Ah yes.... the airbags...
Well, my Airbag warning light was on for the 4th time... I had gone to the dealer to fix it 3 times and it still came on and as a result, the front airbags DID NOT deploy. The left side curtain and side-impact bags did deploy however and the only minor discomfort i have is from the curtain bag hitting my shoulder
I can't really discuss it too much (if u catch my drift) ...

Those pictures make it look like the fuckin car had it's head decapitated and the entrails were spilling out. Gruesome.

No...the amazing part is that you didn't think there was anything wrong with driving at 90 mph on bald tires.

I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

Sorry to hear about that man, glad your ok. I don't know if anyone else said it but there looked like a bit of a steep slide down the hill on the other side of the guard rail. Those things really held up hitting them at less than 90mph. RIP

Dude, I would delete this thread. If your insurance co. finds out you were drivining that fast they will site wreckless driving and fight your claim and will definately drop you. Then your rates will be phenominal. Either way, not a good thread. Should have just said you had a blow out or something.

Anyways I need some parts.

Anyway I can get some?

Or you could say F it and get a Cobra, Z06.. Elise?

90 mph? Bald Tires? Traction controls off? ........damn looks like you barely missed earning this years first Darwin award :spank:

4 years to Supercharge
02-08-2007, 04:02 AM
Was thinking the same with traction control but with those rears so smooth I'm not sure if that would have helped.

Had to dodge the animal that was crossing the road... or there was a pothole that tweaked the steering and put the car into a spin.

Running tires that smooth is almost as bad as not having insurance and letting the neighbor kid borrow the car for his first time driving. :naughty:

Sad to hear but reinforces the crash safety of the 8.

RX8Maine
02-08-2007, 06:25 AM
Even though bald tires put a lot of rubber on the road, it probably wasn't the rubber that the tire manufacturer meant to be on the road. You were probably driving on the construction rubber (hard, plasticky, NOT sticky or grippy) with all of the tread compound long gone.

Glad to see you're OK. That must have been a scary-as-hell experience.

Dtorre, Nrider stop being assholes, you're already good at it! I do'nt recall reading any where in this thread that AdictiveRX had his DSC off........ why would he be doing that speed on a main road with the traction control off? ''feel the love'' jees! the guy just had a f*cked up accident and lucky 2 b alive...

Don't mean to go off topic, but Mazda stated that those concept cars are far far away. It even says on Mazda's site: "We want to suggest where Mazda design will be in 2020."

Besides, the front of the Kabura makes me puke.

Raptor2k
02-09-2007, 12:55 AM
The Kabura is actually set for the near-future (2008-09ish), if they do decide to put it into production. It probably won't be exactly like the concept model as one could expect.

Sorry to hear about your 8. +1, glad you're okay and that no body else was involved. What are you looking at for replacments?

AdictiveRx
02-09-2007, 11:26 AM
Well.... Thanks to all who posted their concern!
For those of you "skeptics" out there, you leave me no choice but to get defensive...

The tires were bald, YES I KNOW
The road+tires were COLD, I KNOW
There was fresh OIL on both shoulders of the freeway, I KNOW
The guard rail probably saved my life, I KNOW
Driving over the posted 65mph limit is against the law, I KNOW

With all due respect to those who are "parenting" me, I know the circumstances of my actions and I am now WELL aware of what could happen, seeing as it did. I have already spoken to the insurance and they gave an adjustment (i mentioned this earlier) . But thanks for the warning, it was a good suggestion. (in all seriousness)

So to those who sent their regards/concerns/best wishes/sympathy/empathy THANK YOU! :):)

As for the rest.... I will now give you a chance to say how much of a wining baby I am :P:)

Sorry to hear about the crash, I know how you feel I rolled my old car 3 and a half times. I also got a way without a scratch worst I got was undoing my seatbelt and falling down, but it hurts to see a car go like that. Hope everything works out for you, and that you find a new car that makes you as happy as the 8.

dam......yea, blame it on the tires. 90 miles per hour around a curve is not a smart thing to do. Why go 90 on the highway anyways. Speeding is stupid. Anything can happen. Lucky u were not hurt. Not many people are given a second chance with a wreck like that one.
