View Full Version : 23 Mpg !!!!!!
r0tor 09-12-2003, 06:06 PM I'm just celebrating getting 23mpg (ok it was really 22.93 but whatever)!!!
It was comprised of about...
60 city miles
160 highway miles doing 65-75 mph
a half hour of idling do to a frikkin accident during that highway trip
and 3 short stints up to 90 some mph showing up a few people who tried racing me
I think without the accident and races, I may have got 24+mpg... not that I'd be bragging about that if I had any other car, but still its something.
for reference I have about 1000 miles on the car now
RodsterinFL 09-12-2003, 06:23 PM Great!!!!
so, would youy agree that there is not a great difference in MPG compared to other similar performing cars?

well I've been in faster cars that got a bit better milage (Vette getting around 26 mpg), but I don't think its DRASTICALLY worse if you drive with some common sense.
Maximus 09-12-2003, 06:38 PM pr0ber,
What grade gas were you using and roughly what was the average temprature during most of your driving time? Also tell us about how much A/C did you use during this MPG observation.
mikeb 09-12-2003, 06:41 PM sounds good to me and with only 1k on your car thats really good

umm...
gas was a mix of 89 (I didn't have enough $ to fill it with super) and some leftover 93 octane (put the good stuff in to celebrate getting to the break-in period :D )
temps were high 70's and I had the AC on the whole time on the lowest fan setting
newport8 09-12-2003, 10:16 PM pr0ber what's the build date on your car?

I would not agree at all. As said on other threads, several of the RX-8's are getting much different gas mileage. For example, I drove down to Tucson, Arizona, which was 99% freeway driving at about 70MPH, and I got only 21 MPG.
Racer X-8 09-12-2003, 10:29 PM Hey pr0ber,
Was that a fillup with a warm engine, used-up non-stop?
Or did you have some shutdowns/cold engine events during that tankfull?
highspeed8 09-12-2003, 11:11 PM I would love to see 23 mpg. Heck even 18 would be nice. I'm at 1070 miles, averaging 15 mpg on the last tank. My overal mpg through five tanks has been dropping from 17 to 15...
(80% city driving and probably 1/4 of the time is non-granny driving.) ;)
JeRKy 8 Owner 09-12-2003, 11:43 PM I still want to hearsomeone get 18mpg with only city driving!
texian 09-13-2003, 10:14 AM The day I bough my auto, I drove it home 250 miles or so, and I got 28 MPG, 95 degree heat, A/C on, two passengers. Since then, I have been doing about 70 - 30 hiway to city, and have conisitently got 23MPG.
I now have almost 2K on the car, and am in heaven.
newport8 09-13-2003, 11:42 AM It's such a crap shot, isn't it!

I'm getting 18-19 when I'm only driving in town.

That would be me. After starting with 9 miles on my car and getting dismal MPG at first, with over 1K on the car, I'm getting 17.8 MPG on the last fill-up while driving all city. I'm using premium only, though.
Got 23 MPG during one all highway run of about 250 miles. That was with cruise control set at 75 the whole way. Man I really like the way the cruise control works in this car.
mikeb 09-14-2003, 04:37 PM does your m3 have a rotary
do american muscle car's use rotary
rx8 has a rotary this plays a big role in the mpg

Does it make any sense why you are even posting on this board? You make stupid comments comparing gas mileages of a rotary to a piston. Apples and oranges.
We don't care what kind of MPG's your M3 is getting. This is an RX-8 forum. Now leave.

I would certainly hope that for an extra $20K+ your car would be better in some things.
Maybe it has better gas mileage, & definately better performance times. The braking and handling is a wash, IMO. The interior is subjective. And are you kidding us about the reliability of the M3 being better? IMHO, the reliability of your M3 is far worse than the RX-8 will ever be. Last the M3 will never be able to match the sexy sporty styling of the RX-8.

I'm so glad you didn't sell your car too. You don't deserve a car like the RX-8. You are too blinded by the roundel on your hood, to notice that there are plenty of other great performance, great handling sports cars out there for thousands less.
And in regards to your derogatory flaming remarks about the RX-8. It's uncalled for. Now's it time for the moderator to boot your ass off this board.
RX-8 Zoomster 09-14-2003, 05:23 PM Now to get this thread back on topic.
Glad to hear of your gas mileage, pr0ber. We have about 850 miles on our car. My wife has gotten almost similar mileage on her last trip, 22.5 MPG. And that was about 75/25 highway/city. No cruise control, 65-75mph speeds, occasional hi-rev shifting. Using highest octane.

Why do you care? Why are you here? GET A LIFE!
RX8by 09-14-2003, 06:15 PM I have been getting 20-21 mpg from 200-800 miles on my car in mixed driving. 27 miles to work half highway the other half city a lot of slow driving. I just checked my air pressure and it was 40 psi. I just lowered it to 32 psi. I will let you know if it hurts the mileage.
graphicguy 09-14-2003, 07:34 PM Why, oh why do people like devil come over here.
OK, let me address this as simply as I possibly can. First, the roatary has been at the forefront of technology since its inception. BMWs are fine cars. I've owned two of them. Talk about "tons of money", wait until you have to replace the water pump, or a fuel pump, or a fan belt, or any suspension piece....better go get a 2nd mortgage because that's what it's going to take to maintain your ride. Talk about the buggering you're going to get..........
While styling is subjective, I'm sorry, but I guarantee I get more 2nd looks, thumbs up, drooling over my RX8 that I ever did with the BMWs. Quality of the interiors between the BMWs and the RX8 is a wash....both are great.
Performance of the low end 3 series (that's priced close to the RX8) won't come close to the RX8. Handling with those same cars is no contest.....winner RX8.
I passed on a 330ci for the very reasons I stated above. And I'm a BMW lover.
You're right....you definitely don't qualify as RX8 material.
P00Man 09-14-2003, 08:38 PM ive been getting around 18-19 around town, fill up with premium only
17 hundred odd miles on the odo.
edit:
just took a look, whats with all the criers on the boards?

JeRKy 8 Owner 09-14-2003, 09:43 PM Hey for all you guys that say they get 18 in the city are you keeping the RPMs low like under 4000 or 3000 or are you just drivingthe car normal however you want and sometimes accelerating hard ??

I don't redline mine at every shift (if I did, I'd constantly be running at 100 MPH+). I do shift between 5K-6k pretty regularly depending on traffic.
I use 5th a lot in town. I reserve 6th for the interstate exclusively.
-17.9 MPG in town driving
-23.7 MPG in the interstate cruising at 75 MPH
Using stricly premium with about 1K on the clock.
Right, just out of curiousity, I'd like to know why most people are complaining about fuel consumption?
17MPG doesn't seem that expensive when I compare it to my current car, and it has "four" doors...
What exactly was everyone expecting?
No, with any luck, when I get back to South Africa, my local mazda dealer will have a nice Rx, available for a test drive.
*Just for a sidenote. When I parked my car at home, the Average consumption was 23.5L/ 100Km...
The car is an Audi S3 (MY2003)
brothervoodoo 09-15-2003, 12:06 PM Expecting values that are close to what was printed on the sticker.
DijabutiA 09-15-2003, 03:45 PM i dont see why you keep asking about octane; the only way your going to get NEAR that sticker number is only with premium fuel which is what the car was probably tested with
khoney 09-15-2003, 07:20 PM I'm getting about 1MPG better mileage with 89 octane than with 93 octane.
RodsterinFL 09-16-2003, 07:15 PM now try 87 octane and get 2 mpg better!!!
8th1der 09-16-2003, 07:35 PM LOL!
pelucidor 09-18-2003, 04:51 PM I am averaging 17mpg after 2200 miles. I am a little disappointed as this is worse than my SUV that weighs 4400lbs (plus 800lbs for 5 adults and 1 baby and stuff) and is ULEV and does 0-60 in just under 8 secs (I am getting over 18mpg on average).
Here is my fuel economy tracking:
Puppy1 09-18-2003, 08:48 PM But you have to admit the trend has been getting better and bettter just as other owners have noted.
pelucidor 09-18-2003, 11:30 PM Not really - my last three tankfuls gave 18.50mpg, 17.41mpg and 16.87mpg in that order (the last at over 2000 miles). Not a good trend.

You can forgive Puppy1's conclusion. I was thinking along the same lines. Your chart clearly does not indicate those last three tankfuls you just mentioned.
mikeb 09-19-2003, 01:31 AM you have to admit driving it gets better and better
Time2Share 09-19-2003, 01:31 AM I just hit 4000 miles on the way home tonight. Since about 2500 miles I have been getting 21.7-22.1 mpg, and 310 or a few more miles per tank. I've tried 92, 89 and 87 ocatne, the car seems to run the same and achieve the same mpg on all three octane grades. Nothing to complain about here!
r0tor 09-20-2003, 06:24 PM just got a city only driving tank of 19.89 mpg ... not too shabby :p
RotoRooter 09-20-2003, 06:36 PM We are dipping DOWN more lately but our car has 3000 miles on it and it is our commuter her in Atlanta. Our range is 17-19mpg.
I bet if I drove straight on some highway trip, no A/C, I could get 23mpg too.
Not horrible, I wish I could have the guts to put regular in it though.
mikeb 09-20-2003, 08:50 PM I hear ya, I can't make myself put 87 or 89 in the car
RX-GR8 09-22-2003, 01:59 PM prober have you always been getting good MPG or did you notice it get better at a certain time ie, 1000 miles, etc?
