Ok lets just start with I am furious right now and I am hoping to god my 8 is going to be ok. Last Thursday I went out of town and just got back tonight to find the car won't start. Nice. I assume it's flooded. It gives all the characteristics of a flooded engine. All my electrical is working so I wasn't really thinking of it being a dead battery issue. Well before I went out of town I had my oil changed at a Goodyear shop nearby. I specifically told them 5w-20 non synthetic. I get the car from goodyear and it drives home fine which is only about 3 miles away from home and parked the car in the garage and hadn't touched it since. So since it wouldn't start I decided to check the oil level to see if these fools screwed up and you wouldn't believe the nasty Sh!@ that came out on the dipstick. It literally looks like baby food/ runny crap I don't know what it is but I know it's not oil!! I have posted some quick snapped pics I took I'll try to get some better ones up. Please take a look and see if you can tell what the hell this crap is! I'm sorry for the blurry photos but you can tell from the color of the junk on the stick that it's not oil. If anyone thinks they may know wtf this is please please let me know!!! Oh one last thing, this junk went all the way to the top of the dipstick it was not just at the bottom where the oil level guage is at.

dont freak out....you might just need that TSB dipstick replacement..depending on the temp of the engine...i have seen my dipstick look like that....especially if its cold..if it looks likes its foamy....you should be ok...:)

I've never seen anything like that, but I have read of some "milky" substances comming out of dipsticks. I don't think they put crude oil or anything like that in your car, but then again--I've been screwed over by so many "service" garages before...

I hope you find what's what and let us know--just incase I find SKEET in my engine?

I got the same thing right before I changed my oil this morning. It was flooded and it took me a while to get it running due to a deployment to the sandbox. when I saw the sludgy substance, I immediately thought that there's coolant in the oil; but when I drained the rest of the oil, it wasn't milky/sludgy like how it was on the dipstick. my guess was condensation 'cause I've parked the car on the driveway this past week while I was working on it...

That service bulletin was pretty informative, but just how cold is it where you live. I know part of texas has been hit pretty hard with this snow.

Within the last couple of weeks it has gotten below freezing a few times but right now in the 30-40's however these last few days I've been out of town so I'm not quite sure but I think in the 30's. The car was in the garage while out of town so that should've helped some. I did get hit with ice for a few days about 2 weeks ago and during that time the car was harder to start but always fired up. The initial crank seemed to be much slower than normal. I just figured it was due to the icing because unfortunately I did have to leave it out in the weather during that and it was not in the garage so the car at one point was completely covered in ice. Nice huh? I'll be on the phone with Town North Mazda of Richardson, TX first thing in the morning.

No need to worry... I see that everytime I check the oil... in the winter. But I'm in Canada, so its natural. Oh, you southerners and your crazy ice weather...

mine is like that too, is it like there is a foam of bubbles mixed with the engine oil.

Yep. Have seen that too quite often in cold weather.

I just had the vent kit installed on my car to take care of the milky stuff and it's been 500 miles since it and a oil change and I have yet to see the that milky stuff return. It looks like it did the trick. you might want to go to I dealer they won't put it on unless you ask for it.

How cold has it been where you are and how big an issue was it for you before? I saw the TSB and wanted to hear how effective it was...

normal.. checked a used 8 on the lot with 25k same problem, not as much as your dipstick but still noticable.

1) No start,
2) Milky substance on dipstick (it helps if you explain there is so much milky residue that you have trouble accurately reading the dipstick level).

As the others indicated, Mazda has long since put Technical Service Bulletins in place to remedy these problems when they are demonstrated by an owner. Mazda will not hunt you down, break into your garage and smash your driver's window in the dead of night to abduct your RX-8 to a secret government facility and replace parts of your car at their cost. ;) You have to bring them the car and show that the repair is necessary.

I think I dropped the magic words, how it wouldn't start and the substance in the oil. They actually paid for the tow truck which was nice and the rental car is free. The car has about 53K miles on it. I bought it previously owned so I don't know if this has ever happened to it before but I'm hoping to hear something back from them today as to when I can get it back. As for Swoopes earlier question I hardly ever drive over 50miles at once, work is only 9 miles from my home. And those 9 miles are all city roads no highway. But I still hit the redline pretty much everyday. I mean come on if you aren't hearing the shift beep you aren't having any fun.

When I complained about the milky substance he said he could probably guess my typical daily driving. Causes more and more moisture to be built up in the oil - gets worse and worse the further you get from an oil change. The kit helps though.

get that all the time, youll be okay. I was worried the first million times I saw it at 19K miles and I still see it now at 72K, so I guess it wasnt that harmful :)
