View Full Version : Box building for trunk. Dimensions?
416to212 01-11-2007, 10:46 AM Since I know a lot of you have built boxes for your subs in the trunk I would like to request some box dimensions. If anyone has the box patterns written down I would appreciate it. Basically I would like to know what patterns I need to cut in the wood to build a box. Only planning on housing 1 12 inch subwoofer - would like 1.5 - 1.75 cubic feet of volume. Not that i need a lot of airspace but I like my bass a little more booming for Westcoast beats....
WikkedOne 01-11-2007, 11:01 AM here is the box i built for my 12... it's not the prettiest thing in the world.. but it was easy and fits snug with no bolts or screws.
It was about 1.2 cu/ft with 3/4 inch wood.. I built it for my alpine type x 12 which was about 9 inches deep

and here is the specs it is 18 inches across

416to212 01-11-2007, 02:59 PM OOoooooOoo.... There is a nerd amoung us! Nifty 3D rendering! BTW did you rip off the plastic backing to your rear seats? Why/What for?
Any other Box dimensions with a slanted backing?

yeah i was bored and built it on autocad..
yes i ripped the plasic peices out.. i thought they were rattling.. turns out it was the back deck, i left them out though and have spray painted the foam and support brace black so you can't tell
and I didn't want to bother with the slanted back, for several reasons,
1 it would make the build more complex (getting angles right and cutting)
2 i didn't need the space
3 the box wouldn't fit though the trunk opening, i would have to remove the rear seats and support brace...
it just wasn't worth it to me..
WikkedOne 01-11-2007, 03:12 PM Here are the dimentions of the trunk I drew up to help me think without having to go out to my car every 5 mins

if you are going to build a box make sure you build it out of cardboard first just to see if it fits!!! this saved me a load of trouble...
PM me if you want better pics or the autocad files or whatever..
416to212 01-12-2007, 02:26 PM Damn!!! Thank you so much. Excellent reference - has this ever been posted before? As thanks where can I send you a complimentary pocket protector and thick black framed Coke bottle glasses with Scotch tape repair mod?!
Your diagrams will save me a bunch of time.
I've sent you a PM for the additional pics and autocad files.
phat8 02-24-2007, 12:40 PM try to make the box as low and as shallow as possible as to not block off 2 much space for the bass 2 get into the car. i'll post some specs soon 2 help with ur decision.
jstkilntim 02-24-2007, 06:06 PM Also keep in mind box heighth. A good set of 6X9s or components mounted under the deck will not fit if it is too tall.
paulmasoner 02-25-2007, 06:59 PM you could always use the design that ZEnclosures uses. that is right at 1.5cube airspace total, only thing is mounting depth is shallow for most 12's. SOOO you could use that design, and just make it a bit larger

jstkilntim 02-25-2007, 07:51 PM I also have the ZEnclosures box, but it limits the speaker and mounting options in the rear deck.
jzrx8 02-28-2007, 07:37 PM pics installed and where to buy one?
paulmasoner 02-28-2007, 09:47 PM no pics yet.. my car is still in the shop from an accident(stupid HS slut!!)
when i get it back, i am going to do a full thread on my install.

if the link ever doesnt work... go to ebay motors, car audio under parts and accessories, then search rx8. you cant miss it.... look for ZEnlosures..
jzrx8 02-28-2007, 09:51 PM alright thanks
jstkilntim 02-28-2007, 11:30 PM Here is a pic of the old temporary setup using the the ZEnclosures box from ZEnclosures.com. I am trying to finish the system before I post any more pics.

silverwolf 03-01-2007, 12:57 AM i do not want to thread jack but i want ot know if you can fit 2 12's in the 8....
jstkilntim 03-01-2007, 06:32 AM Of course you can. It just depends on how much air space your subs require & how much trunk space you want to give up. The ZEnclosures box can be ordered for 12's if you have subs that only require .75cf each.

Ok, kinda a weird question, but how much room between that box and the rear seats are there? I was thinking maybe I could mount the amp on the back of the box? Not sure if it is flush against the seats or if there is room for that or not. That would be nice though.
firebirdude 03-01-2007, 06:25 PM Ok, kinda a weird question, but how much room between that box and the rear seats are there? I was thinking maybe I could mount the amp on the back of the box? Not sure if it is flush against the seats or if there is room for that or not. That would be nice though. My exact thoughts. If it's only say an inch, maybe I could slide the box to the rear another inch and mount the amp back there. The front mounting surface/beauty panel might not perectly line up with the curved edges..... I'll have to see how it looks.
Also, I'm buying one of these boxes and having a single 12" hole on the driver's side drilled. Gonna port this b!tch! hehe. I'll have exactly 1.2cuft net. (After port and sub displacement) Looks A LOT better than it's sealed counterpart!

jstkilntim 03-01-2007, 06:37 PM If you look in the front of the trunk, there is a little raised area under the pass through. The box fits flush against that or you can push it up over that and put it fairly flush against the crossmembers. Not much room at all. Another member put his subs in the front of this box, but it has to be close. I don't think an amp would fit properly. You may be able to do it if you move it to one side or the other, but my 6XS hit the passthrouh compartment when I tried mounting it in the middle.
dshiznit1489 03-01-2007, 06:52 PM here is my setup, not a good pic. its a 12" Alpine Type R, fits well, and HITZ HARD. 1500w max, 500 rms. :ylsuper:

firebirdude 03-01-2007, 06:56 PM ^^^ Great. A blue RX8 and a 10" Type-R floating in the trunk.... helpful.... :cwm27:

He said its a 12" not a 10...
but what is that program you used to map the output of those boxes? I need that!

EDIT: Ok. I've got my Zen box and set it into place in the trunk. There is next to NO space behind it. Just FYI for others that were trying to fit an amp behind there. Looks like you can slide the box to rear some to squeeze the amp back there, but obviously the curved face trim mounting area will not line up to the car perfectly any longer. :tear: I'm kinda disappointed. The box is fantastic and just as described.... I just hoped I could squeeze the amp behind it. I was thinking about how I could make one myself and use the Zen box as a guide..... but I don't see how I could fit it through the trunk opening. The Zen box is extremely close as it is.:tear:
Well......guess I'm just gonna slide the box forward and deal with the mis-aligning. It doesn't look TOO bad....:tear: but I refuse to mount the amp in the tub. So thats what I get. I'll post up pics when I'm done with the install.

You can. my recconmendations for the enclosure r 2 seperate enclosures built as close to the sub from side 2 side and top 2 bottom, but fairly deep 2 keep the volume size sufficient. the boxes placed 1 on each far side/ left and right of the trunk, behind the seat playing in to the trunk. this leaves a opening in the middle where the removable panel is, obviously removed. the bass will build up in the trunk and reflect back from the end of the car back through the opening in the middle in to the car.tried it and worked well and had good frequency coverage.
Tyguy 04-03-2007, 12:18 PM stupid questions, but what kind of wood do you use and where can I get the felt?
WikkedOne 04-03-2007, 05:11 PM use at least 3/4 inch MDF (your local hardware store will have it)
and the carpet you can get all over the internet like crutchfield.com or your local car audio shop
