View Full Version : missing holes for license plate
tribal azn2 09-05-2003, 10:46 PM so today i finally get my custom plates. as im taking off the dealer plate holder on the rear, i notice theres only 2 screws, both for the top row. so im thinkin that the dealer gave me 2 less screws. but when i took the holder off, to my amusement, theres only 2 holes, wtf? did my dealer forget to drill the 2 holes for the bottom row? or does everyone else only have 2 holes also?
Gord96BRG 09-05-2003, 10:50 PM Yes, the rest of us only have 2 holes also, and there are quite a few other cars on the market with only 2 holes for mounting the license plate at the top. Not a big deal.
Regards,
Gordon

cause theres 4 holes on the license plate, hence the need for 4 holes on the car. and with only 2 holes its going to be rattling and flapping around
MaRX8 09-06-2003, 03:05 PM It won't be rattling around with just two bolts. It a license plate thats a few ounces. Just put it on, I wouldn't suggest driling holes into the back of your car...
IWANTMYRX8 09-06-2003, 06:35 PM God..PLEASE don't drill any holes into the car. Just use the 2 top ones. It will secure it just fine. Trust us. :)
tribal azn2 09-06-2003, 07:50 PM guys, i never said anything about wanting to drill holes
RotorGeek 09-07-2003, 12:05 AM Most Jap cars are coming with only two holes. Just get a thin piece of sponge and stick it to the lower part of your plate in the back. It will stop all the rattling
Here's what I did to keep the plate from maybe rattling around: I got a license plate frame and cover. Then I went to Home Depot and bought a pair of 1/4" nylon plugs that come with screws. They're about $.88 a piece. Then just popped the nylong plugs into the bottom two holes, screwed the frame and plate together and then mounted the whole thing on the car. Cheap and no work involved. :)
carnut 09-07-2003, 12:48 PM I did something similar -- self adhesive rubber pads near the bottom mounting holes on the back of the license plate. No flopping around and no scratches. I have a black plastic frame around the plate, also, so you don't see empty holes in the plate.
Alvidrez 09-07-2003, 03:20 PM I too lamented the absence of the bottom two holes on the RX-8 because the plate does rattle when the trunk is closed. Right before purschasing the RX-8 I bought a Jaguar X-Type. Same problem with only two holes in the trunk lid and same loud rattle when closing the trunk. This has been constant source of irritation for my wife who primarily drives the Jag. I will follow up on the tips above for stopping the rattling. Nonetheless, it would be better if manufacturers went back to the four hold license plate mounting for US spec cars.
Chrisbert 09-09-2003, 08:17 AM I wondered about it too, but my theory is that at speed there should be little turbulance around that area to rattle the plate. I do like the idea of sticky bumper pads though. I'm gonna add those this week.
