Check this out folks - I was wondering if it would be a good idea for our cars. It could sit in the recess in the boot as it's only 110mm high - and it's plug and play.

EDIT: Just checked the dimensions (600x380x110mm high) and it would be a VERY nice fit in the recess!

CLICK HERE FOR DETAILS (https://secure4.vivid-design.com.au/jaycar2005/productView.asp?URL=index&ID=CS2275&CATID=15&SUBCATID=530)

Note the ad shows a significant discount for 5+ units ($159.95 instead of $199.95) so we could do a group buy!

Can someone with more tech/audio knowledge comment on its specs? I'm sure it's not kickass but it could still be a worthwhile addition...

What do you find wrong with the stock BOSE system?

Anyway,

> RMS power: 75W
>Variable low-pass electronic crossover: 40Hz ~ 600Hz

40Hz is a pretty crappy low end frequency for a subwoofer. If we assume 20Hz is a the lowest end of human hearing, and you can generally "feel" the sound pressure a little below that, then that unit is below par. AFAIK the standard BOSE system has better low end response than this. The factory sound seems , to me, to be lacking top end - so maybe replacing the tweeters would be a better "first option" for a sound system change ...

If you like rock groups or country or jazz, then it might be ok - but if you like minimal techno / drum and bass / deep house / or other music with an emphasis on sub bass, then steer clear.

This unit here is a good example of the sort of specs you would be looking for if you wanted to see a dramatic improvement on the factory BOSE system (note : assuming leather pack sound system). Admittedly, it is a lot more expensive - but the rx8 is a fairly expensive car - so I am assuming you can raise the cashola.

ie. 10 Hz, 500W RMS.

There are also plenty of discussions in the "Interior, Audio, and Electronics" section of this site with detailed technical discussion of the most effective ways of upgrading the rx8 sound.

I wouldn't put any subs in the car, it's just adding to the weight :D
