I may be time to let her go.

I have a 2004 RX8 that my wife and I bought when we got engaged in 2004. I thought I would keep her forever but the original engine quit in 2015 and while I thought we would get her fixed, she has been sitting covered in my garage since. Just when I thought we had saved them money to fix her, we need to get our deck replaced. I just know the longer she sits the worse condition she will be in. We just non-oped her so we don't pay insurance on a car that isn't running for a fourth year. I don't even really know that the engine needs to be replaced. When she died it seemed obvious to me but I have had people tell me it could have been a cheaper fix, but that would just be a band-aid, That original engine was doomed, just lived too long to have Mazda replace it. So my question to everyone is, if selling, what is she worth? Is this car for parts? Or do you think it would be someones project car? She was one of the few of her kind I was told. All black, with black and red leather interior, manual transmission. She is still pretty, especially to me.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

where is the vehicle located? that could help determine value as ares with heavy winters detrioritate vehicles quicker due to salt on the roads.
did you ever get the engine compression tested? I really hope so.
If the engine has no compression or it's drastically below minnimum then an engine replacement would be needed.

What exaclty happened when the engine "quit"?

Black with black/red interior isn't particularly rare, but it is a good combination. Pictures and your location will be the best aids in selling or determining value. Keep in mind though that RX-8's are not desirable to the broad majority, especially not early S1's. S2's and R3 trim in particular get more love but the demands and inefficiencies of these cars limits their appeal to a select audience that appreciate what the car gives more than what it takes away.

I paid 500$ for my non-running 2007 (failed coolant seals), black with black/red leather interior, manual, and GT trim level, cold weather and appearance package, and 89k miles when bought. You'd have to find someone very generous to want to spend more than $1,000 on a non-running RX-8, and it'd have to be in especially good condition or of special consideration at that. Considering the other side of the coin; I paid $3,100 for a Mazda reman from the dealer and installed it myself, factor in 1,500-2,500 more if paying someone else to do the job and any incidentals that might pop up during removal and replacement. On the high side you could have a car you care about with a known condition engine for $5,600. Seems you already have other forms of transport and an immediate financial need, so that may not suite you at this time.
