Fyi: Attention rx8 owners, [clutch pedal issues?]
PLease READ,
Last night after washing my vehicle, as I was driving I depressed the clutch and I heard a click. After this incident, the vehicle felt different, the clutch pedal became very soft and wouldn't come back up, it kept sticking to the bottom floor, it became extremely difficult to shift between gears. I decided to let the car rest for the night, this morning on my way to work, the car wouldn't even turn on, i played with the clutch and eventually It turned on, it wouldn't let me go into any gear besides 2nd and 4th and even then it would grind. I decided then to drop it off at Mazda. I was worried due to my broke status and being out of warranty since march of this year. Turns out that Mazda has a recall for this known defect where the CLUTCH Pedals breaks through the firewall. They at first wanted to charge me $115 Diagnosis, however I asked why, and stated that I had come in a while back and a technician had told me that they would diagnose it free of charge, THey called me back and said they would be covering the issue due to warranty. ANyways, I wanted to inform you that the clutch pedal may break, and if so YOU ARE COVERED, take it to your nearest rep ASAP! I was helped by CHIS ARCHER over at GALPIN MAZDA on Roscoe & Sepulveda in Van Nuys. He knows what he is talking about, and i enjoyed my experience with him, I will def. look into buying parts from them in the future as well as having work done there. My question is, if my trasmission develops issues because of this defect, are they liable for it? Will they cover it were it so>? |
Well, I'm glad you got it fixed, and I'm somewhat glad you posted this, but most other will probably see it in one of the two other major clutch breaking threads that have been ongoing for over three years now.
The letters to the owners started arriving in the mail today and actually you should go thank all the people in this thread https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/clutch-pedal-snap-off-8-year-warranty-recall-%7E%7E%7E-132912/ as they are the ones that continually pushed for this and made it happen. That thread has 45k views so a lot of people have been watching and keeping up to date on this issue. |
this happened to me a while ago, but i caught it before it fully broke. my pedal was really loose, and i could barely push it with my foot, and it would go behind the brake pedal. You should double check their work, cause it might happen again if they didnt do a good job of welding it.

Why wouldn't you just go get a new one?
If you had it fixed, can prove it with the required info, go get one! Read this........... http://www.hyperfinity.com/public_images/RX8SSP82.pdf |
just got the letter today.. warranty for the clutch is the same as the engine core warranty
|
just got that same letter :)
|
Awesome^^
They called me today, and I picked up the vehicle, it is running great, my 3rd gear used to grind, but not aymore. :) that was quick |
Will they replace it even if it hasnt broken? Mine makes a noise now and then, like a little Clicking and some possible squeeking...But i cant say its broken.... so would they still switch it out for a NEW pedal?>?
also... shifting into second gear sucks...it Kinda grinds a Bit...could this be the Clutch Pedal? or my Syncro? |
my clutch popped last night and after it has gotten shorter compresion i have to push it nearly all the way to the floor for the clutch actually to engage. its sometimes difficult to get into gears espesially reverse. i called the dealership and they said that it could be slave or master cylinder but i told him i read about the callback for the clutch pedal bracket because im pretty positive htats what it is. but then he told me that that specific callback for my car was expired? i thought if a company has a callback then every single car can get fixed for free, i didnt know there was a certain time frame?

im glad you found this thread (or one of the many on this topic) before starting a new one. the mazda replacement is no better design than the one that broke. unbolt your pedal and inspect it. while its out even if its not broke yet weld it so it wont break

i did mine with a mig. be sure you dont burn through it tho. if you cant weld pay someone with experience to do it for you. its very easy and should be pretty cheap
|
ok and was yours broke? i can see where its snapped on mine its on the left side, but its hard to put in reverse, will welding it fix that?
|
yep mine cracked. i straightened it out and welded it up. rock solid for a couple years now
|
This recall tho is only if u are under 80k right?
|

it's a warranty extension and NOT a recall. they are not obligated to repair it beyond the 8yr/100k miles. it was extended mainly due to the side effects of what happens when it does fail.
nothing on a car lasts indefinitely. |
Hello,
I'm jumping in here to see if the problem with the spot weld on the oem clutch pedal assembly has been fixed if I got a new one. Mine went about 4 ears ago, had it re-welded, and installed a reinforcement bracket. It just started to feel very slightly weird recently. It has a super soft crunching feel (not audible) when shifting. I'm guessing the weld came off again, and want to get a new one in, but would go with after market if oem still have the same issue. Thanks. |

Before you point at the pedal, check the clutch master cylinder. A properly installed reinforcement bracket along with having had the pedal welded back up shouldn't be flexing or feeling off at all. My clutch started to feel weird even prior to installing the clutch pedal reinforcement bracket and when I checked out my pedal it was fine, but the master cylinder was leaking and crud and dirt and stuff was all over it and getting into it around the rod on the pedal. Replaced the master cylinder which resolved the issue and installed the new reinforcement bracket since I already had it and it was all taken apart anyways. Combined with having firewall bracing in the form of the MS strut bar pushing on the brake master cylinder right next to it, my clutch pedal feels amazing. Only thing I didn't do that I wish I had was install a SS line while I was already there.

Thanks for the pointers. I took it in to my usual rotary guys to have it looked at. I'll report the result.
|
Sounds like I have this same issue, but of course my Warranty is wll expired now.
Taking it this afternoon to a Transmission shop. Any ideas as to how much this may cost to fix? |
Follow up to my last post, my Transmission guy called and yep it was the clutch pedal. $130 for the pedal assembly plus labor but he doesnt know how much labor will be. Breathing a sigh of relief I thought it would be an expensive fix. Unless of course its going to take hours to replace.
|
i cannot stress enough to just take the pedal out (3 nuts, 2 plugs) and weld it up. if you dont have a welder any shop can do it cheap. its a simple fix without having to buy any brackets or a replacement pedal
