Fixing power steering issue

I know there are a gazillion and one threads in the tech forum on how to fix (or possibly fix) power steering issues. I just took my 8 to a mechanic who tells me that it'll cost me $1,500 just for a new rack and that I need a new rack to fix the issue. I plan to take it to a second mechanic for another opinion. But is there anyone in the greater L.A. area (I would be willing to drive but I am based in West L.A.) who might be able to check out my power steering issue and possibly fix it for less than $1,500? I don't have the time (or the abilities, frankly) to do the cleaning/resoldering/examining that is described in the various threads.

Please PM me if you can.

Thanks!

most likely not the rack. i think dozer is the one that usually helps people out with this over there. i think he takes payment in beer. :)

Indeed, but be careful, he wears rainbow colored clothes and is all for the gay pride movement.

were theres three way to fix this, the way i tell people to do it, by cleaning the connectors, then theres actually changing out the harness, and then there the last solution by just changing out the rack too

is changing out the harness what the TSB addresses?

I have a feeling this mechanic is taking the easy way out by saying its the rack. But again, I don't have the time or abilities to fix the issue myself. So I will pay as long as its less than $1,500 and can provide plenty o' booze. :)

^i have no idea, but i usually recommend cleaning out the connectors first, this has happend to me and it was quick and easy fix..

+1 he needs to check the connectors first. 1/2 an hour and a can of contact cleaner is definitely cheaper and easier than a rack fix.

anyways, caligirl you have a PM :)...

Unfortunately for me, I don't have time/abilities - I am a girl, keep in mind. :P So it'd be difficult for me to try that myself.

I did ask the mechanic to check the connectors - I told him at least three times. He still claims its the rack.

I'm getting my kegs ready for Dozer.

Time to switch mechanics then. :) Lazy mechanics aren't worth the trouble...

RX8CaliGirl 08-24-2009 06:32 PM

Well, it really COULD be the rack, ya know. I asked him to check the connectors and see if they just need to be cleaned/resoldered and he said that he did but that its a rack issue. That's why I'm getting a second opinion. And it really could just be the rack, in which case I'm screwed.

More likely this.

Jeff has put a ton of miles on his car and tracks it on a regular basis and still doesn't need to replace his rack. Sure it's possible but since it's an electric rack most mechanics aren't very good at diagnosing the proper problem.

Additionally if your mechanic is going to throw parts at the problem I would expect him, as a good mechanic, to start with cheap parts first (like a new wiring harness) rather than the most expensive part possible.

my father was a mechanic. he told me the only way to
make money in that business was to cheat people..
so he did and at the end of the day he was still broke.

I might have an intake to install too :suspect: Even with all of your guys' expertise (not being sarcastic here) I don't see how we'll be able to finish all of this before the meet.

Atilla 09-02-2009 11:02 AM

If john works w/out any distractions he should be able to get the exhaust swapped in 2 hours tops. I can help w/the intake and adjusting shocks, no problem and dozer can work on the power steering (if she shows up). And after all that, i can help film the sound clips for jedi while heading over to the meet.

Only thing we're gonna need is concentration and less distractions.

which is virtually impossible but i have seen it done once...:D:

Jedi54 09-02-2009 11:18 AM

I'm down for helping fix the power steering if you guys need.
Dozer, I've got a new bottle of electric contact cleaner I can bring with me
