Problem we're running into here with the 8 club is that people think that EVERY single topic EVAR has been discussed so they'll just hit the button at every opportunity.
While it is true that we've covered countless topics over the years, sometimes actually finding the thread is not always as easy as some would think.

If they implemented the rule where you HAD to provide a similar thread then maybe it wouldn't abused as much because those who would hit the button are also probably too lazy to search themselves. (on someone else's behalf) :cool:

The only threads you can see are the FAQ's and the Search Button.

The problem feeds into itself. Older members tell new members to search. The search engine here is lacking. Then you get new members replying/bumping old threads which they really have no idea if what ever they are researching has been resolved/improved/dismissed due to a bad search string or a search engine not returning solid results.

IMO this button would get abused just for the sake of it. We have enough pissing matches around here that many threads would get moved out of spite.

i think the biggest problem today is that most internet n00bs today cant search for shit. in the other words, they often did not use the right "keyword"

Coming from older internet gen(me). I start using internet when 2400bps modem was "Da shit" dont even have search engine back then. later when search engine first started, it was horrible(compared to what google is today), and u have to think of a lot of words before you can find the stuff that you want.

today? type one word in and Google will "do the work" for you.

This forum's search engine is ok, its doing its job well as long as you can give it the right "keyword"

And therein lies the problem, the right keywords are often only obvious to people who are already well versed in the subject matter.

I am also a wizen internet user, new to the RX-8, not the rotary (1st gen RX-7 owner), and consider myself an accomplished searcher. (I'm in the midst of doctoral research so I need to be.)

Quite frankly the signal to noise ratio on the board's search results is far too low. As you all well know, for every nugget of wisdom there are ten nuggets debating whether the first nuggets is wisdom or not. (For instance this response to this thread).

Although I am seldom guilty of not searching I can certainly see where it would take much less time to ignore admonishments for not searching than to sift through the dross looking for the answer to your questions.

I have much better luck (an unaccounted for element in internet searching) if I search this board through google.

The problem with our search engine is you have to know what you are looking for. It does not help either the search engine is case sensitive and you need to match the exact spelling.

just force 10 posts to be posted until a thread can be posted without admin/mod approval. on quite a few boards like that. it prevents spam being posted, and reposts on subjects that are similar. let the mods weed out what they consider a repost or not. should also help with the repost or search comments being the only thing flooding threads. which has also made for an "a$$hole" forum feeling with new members getting reamed by certain individuals.

exact spelling, yes. case sensative, no. its not google where it will come back with a "did you mean: n00b".

I think it might be AVSforrum but one sight I go to automatically searches for the words in your thread title and displays similar results before letting you type the body of the thread of submit it. That way you can find similar things. Good idea IMO.

It can be hard finding what you are looking for if you are newer to the vehicle or some of the terminology... and also, if you are new to forums in general, you may not know the usefulness of the feature. Even if I know what I am looking for, I often have trouble finding/find it very time consuming to find what I need with the search feature

Maybe in the email you get when you register, include a brief faq outlining this?
