User Reputation!?

Well, cross my heart I searched for the subject!

Anyways, I am a member on some other forums (www.rx7club.com included) and I've noticed that, in their majority, all have a way to vote in favor or against a certain posts. Thus adding / removing from a users "reputation" - I think a feature like that would help newbs, as well as not-so-active members to id who they are about to reply to, and maybe even think twice before replying.

Oh, well....just a thought.

cgrx 02-28-2005 11:09 AM

They have that on another site I visit - www.707imports.com. It's pretty cool

khtm 02-28-2005 11:13 AM

Yeah that's a great suggestion. I've set that up on a couple forums I administered. It helps people when reading posts decide if the poster is an asshole or not. ;)

My point precissely.

dazygirl415 02-28-2005 12:29 PM

I can think of a couple a$$hole posters on this forum off-hand......

Aoshi Shinomori 02-28-2005 02:49 PM

They have this on Clubrsx.com. I like it, but I also don't like it. There are too many people I think, that would abuse it. I hate it when I get negative reputation for people disagreeing with my posts. Whatever, if we do end up getting the rep points, I guess I'll have to live with it.

army_rx8 02-28-2005 02:58 PM

^^hmm coudl you vote for yourself:p hehehehe

If you care about rep, it'll make you think twice before posting. This, in turn would decrease the number of pointless posts (obviously, the Lounge should be an exception to this rule..) throughout the site. Therefore making it easier to find meaningful information when searching for something.

That's the thing though. I don't want to hold anything back, or have anyone else hold something back because of it. Over there, I get negative rep because I am a conservative(in the bully pulpit). I don't think things like that are fair, people abuse the system. Now I don't really mind, but if I had a negative rep and people thought less of me for that, it would get to me. See where I'm coming from? By the way, about me holding back, I don't mean I want to be allowed to be racist or anything like that. I just want my post to be molested as little as possible.

cgrx 02-28-2005 05:32 PM

there are ways to set it so that no one person can ruin reputation or give too much to someone without giving it to others, etc.

In my mind, at least, it works like this:

1. If you have to ask a question, do so respectfuly.
2. If you have something to say, make sure it is in no way a personal attack, purposefuly intended to start a flame fest, or straight disrespectful.
3. If you don't have anything coherent to say, save it for the Lounge (no pun!)

RX8-TX...you have my support on this 100%. The bigger this forum gets, we will be forced to add more controls. Not to restrict, but to maintain quality. There are many, many great people on this forum that contribute great advice and share knowledge daily. There are also a few that are counter-productive from time to time. This suggestion should be viewed as a leash, rather than a muzzle!!

I understand it can work, especially if we can prevent abuse of the system. There are just some that are so immature that no matter what you say, as long as they disagree with you, you get neg repped. Not saying it will happen here, just something I disapprove of. Although most people here are very mature and we wouldn't need to worry about it too much, I'm just expressing my concerns.

2 things to say about that:

1. This is not ClubRSX, and there is not Street Encounter forum. So...the, "your d^@% smaller than mine" rarely occurs here in the magnitude as there (although it does happen...)
2. Those who abuse it....well, I am sure it'll catch up with them.

I hope so, and the above is true. Just a bad experience so far with it, that's why I posted my concerns. Maybe this forum will change my mind about it. :)

RX8-TX 02-28-2005 10:17 PM

I wonder...should I start a poll?
[whispering]Hey! Is GOD listening?[/whispering]

Aoshi Shinomori 03-01-2005 01:41 AM

You may as well start a poll, get some more opinons on it. Let's see the response from the rest of the forum.

Why do I get the feeling I could type "I hope everyone has a good day" and get bad rep points from some people on this forum? :p

naaaaaaaaaaaaah ;)
I am sure we could make it automatic so that, for every new forum user, they automatically vote to give you a neg. rep. point! Technology! :p

Omicron 03-01-2005 10:17 AM

This forum software has the reputation functionality, but we decided not to enable it for now because of the reasons stated above.

PUR NRG 03-01-2005 10:30 AM

It's an interesting concept, but would reputation points be adjusted on the fly by the responder's own reputation? Sorta like how the number of posts a user makes is automatically updated in the post header.

A person with a positive rep of 1000 pts. leaves feedback. That feedback should be worth more points than a person with a negative rep of -500 pts.

There are some Ragnarok Online forums that use the same vBulletin stuff. Their reputation system is based on "zeny" and "jellopies." (RO related stuff.) Red vs Blue has a very interesting "Karma" System which is very similar to reputation. Individual posts can gain or lose reputation which affects the total Karma of the poster. If you have positive Karma, you have a ton of mod points you can spend to mod other posts up or down. If you have negative Karma, either you have to gain back points via good posts or wait a while for your Karma level to get back to normal. The best part is the individual post modding because they have filters which allow you to block out all posts below a specified Karma level. They don't use vBulletin though... And explotation of the system is very rampant...
