I've listed below, a couple of the Rules of Conduct (from the FAQ section) that cover this subject. We (Mods) try to catch them, but we can't be everywhere all the time.

4. Personal attacks against other forum members will not be tolerated, nor will any type of "trolling" for a fight. This includes political attacks, slurs, or sneering at any viewpoint or political party.

5. No racist, homophobic, or misogynistic remarks, including derogatory slang, be it overt or covert, will be tolerated.

6. Be respectful. This is harder to define, but will be moderated. An example would be disrespecting RX-8 owners who chose an automatic transmission over a manual, and "sneering" at them or acting like they're idiots for the choice they made. If a moderator believes you are being purposefully disrespectful to a fellow member, you will be notified. Bashing for the sake of bashing will not be tolerated.

10. Attacks on new forum members (or "Noobies") will not be tolerated. Remember we were all new to the forum once.

True but how many of them truly read all the guidelines? :)

I am a noob in comparison to some of you veteran members and have found a wealth of knowledge from various searches. It just seemed to be common sense to me but I can totally understand why some new people post in the wrong section or only do a limited or no search. This place is indeed a vast and perhaps overwhelming place to the beginner forum member.

It is important to keep this place as free of repeat post clutter as possible but isn't the whole point of forums and clubs like this to foster relationships of like minded individuals whilst pass on information to each other. I am grateful for every post that I have read that has helped me enjoy the addiction that we all have here and if I can help someone else in that way than I will do my best.

I will not pretend to have all the answers to solve the 'noob' problem but perhaps part of the registration process there could be a short intro to proper posting similar to what one would have to read for a software agreement. The last time I installed a Microsoft programme there was way too much legal stuff to read but certainly three sentences would suffice for out purposes. The idea here being that one could not post until it has been read (and signed). Just a passing thought.

So long ago, when I was a noob I spent over a month of reading this site before I got a login. Then, it took 3 months before I had 20 posts. There is a lot of information here. But, the Rules of Conduct (in the FAQ) are only 20 sentences.
I have asked people to use the search my self. But, I have tried to do it with a little tact and sometimes even provided the link to the answer in the same post.

I think I did nothing but read for the first two months!

How about something like all Nooblets get redirected to the stickies for X amount of time? I thinking of other ideas as well............but thats my first thought, but I'm also logged into work and doing that at the same time, so I better think about it some more.
Maybe we all should draft a "standard" response and have it available as a link that we can just point at often?

I don't wanna alienate new members either, but we may need a solution.

Yeah the more threads that get started really do make it harder to search because there is a lot of repeated threads you have to get thru to find the good threads.

Or make a requirement to read the main stickies in each section first and you cannot post in that section with out reading them (at least click and open them) first.

That might just be the one..............can we make that a requirement and they have to signoff that they have actually watched it in it's entirety before posting?

Maybe this is the one that we should have a link to at the top of the page, so we can just link it all the time?

Maybe a welcome forum would be good. Make it so that new guys can post in there all there questions and whoever want to can answer them. Those that get offended about people not searching can just not go in there. Have a few stickys about posting, common mods, so forth (I know we already have these, but put them in there too!).

Doing it this way, we will still have repeat posts, but at least they will be all in one place. Another thing that could be done is when someone does a search make it a choice to search this "welcome" forum along with the rest of the site or leave it out of the search. This will help all those unrelated search results and make the search work better.

Problem is.....they will still make new threads with same ole subjects...............unless let's say they are re-directed to that thread/area until X amount of time and/or posts in there, then they graduate and are released on the rest of us. Just thinking out loud here. Can you imagine how much mis-information would be in there? :eek:

Some forums have this rule where a person doesn't get new thread starting privileges until like 20 posts.

The sad part is where the know it all's make longer posts trashing them, than actually answering the question. Must be a college education dysfunction.

I did the same. I could log in but could not post for a month. However the issues we had back then VS now are and where not the same.

+1 There are members on here that have been on here for some time now (over two years +) and think there sh!t dont smell. IE; "rude uncalled for poting behavior". This is not going to fly with me and everytime I see this BS "conduct" I will report it! :mad:

Searching wouldn't be nearly as bad, if when noob start's a new thread, people responded by giving a brief explanation and a link to a thread with in depth discussion. That way, any time you find a thread related to your topic you'll be able to find other relevant threads easily.

"Search noob!" is not productive especially when you're not sure what search terms to use.

but on the flip side of that there are new members who are given a short answer and told to search (with some even providing the search link) and just ignore the reply since it wasn't descriptive enough or it wasn't the answer he/she was looking for.

There are new members that expect to be spoon fed. They keep starting new threads (with questions that are answered in the FAQ) when they were already told in their many other new threads to try searching first.

yes, quite. I search all the time and it does take some time to find the right combination of words.

True.....it takes effort and some just don't(or won't) put in that effort. I agree the "search noob" is of little use, but I am guilty of using it from time to time myself.
There isn't going to be a fool proof way, but maybe we can come up with something productive. I'm always willing to help those that help themselves(where I can). I like the brief explanations with a link to the more detail, but I fear that's not going to stop the posts in that thread and I'm sure it won't stop the new threads on old subjects.

The only things I can think of, are going back and deleting useless threads or a thread rating system so you can tell the difference between a 5 star thread with a how to thats got pictures, and a 0 star thread of someone asking if synthetic oil is bad for the renesis or not. then you can specify in your search if you want to see all threads or only threads that have 2 or more stars.

True, However when you pay to attend Collage they Teach you, they dont tell you to hit up a Library :squint:

the idea is that by the time one is entering college at the undergraduate level they are ready to learn on their own with the guidance of the college faculty. Graduate students of course spend most of their time in the library.

Most students today think that the job of a college faculty member is the same as a high school teacher.

I'm not sure exactly why we are making the comparison between thread searching and college study but there seems to be a common theme of not wanting to research on your own wherever you go these days.
