Rep power?

I have noticed on many forums out there... there is a rep count for users. I think this would be helpful (if possible with this script)... especially in cases of buying parts... vendors.... listening to people with mods/tech info... and what not cases.

When you like what someone posts, or would like to commend them for something, you click the "Add rep" on that person and it gives them a point to add to their rep.
The higher their rep, the higher the amount of useful/good posts the user has made based upon feedback of other users.

For example if someone posts a very good DIY guide for something, you click the button to give him a rep point and write a comment saying "Awesome guide!" and it'll be added to his rep bar.

There's two cons:

People can exploit it and get 'expertise' that they don't deserve
It discourages newcomers from making posts, as they might feel unimporant.

I don't think those two cons are enough, but its also a question of whether the vBulletin version we have supports it. I'm not terribly excited either way.

I think this is a good idea. It would create more incentive for people to use the search tool and for people to contribute in a positive way

GT, I don't know how you could exploit it if you can't give yourself any reps. I don't know how you could get expertise you don't deserve if all the points are coming from people who feel like you do deserve them.

I think you could argue that it actually would encourage new comers to do their research and post more so that they become "important".

The more I think about it, this is a great idea

This system is homo. It's on a couple other forums I'm on and it just turns into a big circle jerk popularity contest. Why people care about their rep on an internet forum is beyond my comprehension, but they do. One forum I was on implemented it, and a couple months later removed it because of how out of control it got.

The only rep I ever saw that worked was a system where you started with 100% and only moderators could add or subtract points. People got points for posting DIYs and other incredibly helpful information, not because you thought he made a funny joke, and lost points for attacking people, breaking forum rules, or bad sales.

Voted for IDC because there are pro's and con's to both so I'm neutral on this one.

I don't think we need a number to tell us who is wise around here.....we can pretty much read and make decisions for ourselves...

Heh, hey r-enzyme. :)

And yea, as a few above have stated - it turns into this big popularity contest. Friends start 'rep'ing their friends for everything they say, and that friend returns the favor. I've never been a fan of popularity contests in general, but the Internet kind lead to a lot of abuse. Likewise, you could create multiple accounts and rep yourself back and forth. DIGG.com uses a similar system, and it leads to all sorts of abuse where someone will post something and every single one of their friends will 'digg' it so it goes to the front page, even if the story sucks. In return, they know that if they post a story those same friends will boost them up.

this becomes a "i like this person so i'm repping them" mess. It lends to cliques as well as fights. People giving bad rep to people they don't like simply out of spite. it can be setup to help deter this kind of action but it will always happen.

it's meant to help with credibility but it ends up becoming more of a popularity contest... it's just one more way of measuring an e-wang.

millerlight 10-18-2008 05:19 AM

i say no, i see this as being a popularity contest aswell.
