My user profile got hacked??

I noticed that AFTER I confirmed my registration all my data got edited or hacked.

Is this some sort of induction by the admins? Or is someone screwing with me.

Nope. I occasionaly find myself replying to a thread only to find that I am replying as someone else! I check my post and the Avatar is now suddenly different! What gives?

That happened to me when I first registered. My very first message on this forum showed up as if it was sent by someone else. So I went back in and edited it to "blank" and then logged out and logged back in with my username and password. No problems since then. I suppose I COULD have gone in and changed that other member's profile if I had wanted to.

There have been other threads on this. It seems to happen randomly. Try logging out (there's a logout link at the bottom of the homepage) then log back in. Pretty weird.

Well what is odd is that it's not that I am another user. Someone went in and changed my info to be similar but with more smart-ass remarks.

My occupation and city for example were changed so they they sounded the same but were altered to be insulting. As well as other things.

My guess is someone might be troll'in this board and hacking occasionally for fun.

Not a great first experience when joining a new board. :(

It's happened to quite a few people before. I remember something about deleting all the existing cookies and try logging on again. I may be mistaken... Nonetheless, it worked for me and I haven't had a prob since.

We're still checking on it- I haven't heard anything from the higher-ups but you guys will know as soon as we do what's going on.

I have had this happen also, 20-30 minutes after I joined.

Mistaken Identity

A few weeks ago, I was about to post and noticed I was about to do so as someone else. I logged out, and logged back in to cure that. No, I did not bother messing with their profile.

I'm guessing when we log in to the forum, we're assigned a code or cookie that gets recycled after our session is over (by logging out or timing out). I had been logged in earlier and my session timed out.

I think the way I became someone someone else was that my old timed out code or cookie was assigned to the second person whose session was still valid, so when I tried to refresh my browser with the reassigned code or cookie, the system thought I was the other person. Hope that made sense. Just my theory.

Very close. If you time out your cookie, a new user just confirming their regiustration may temporarily be assigned that one. Best option before posting is to log out /on, then clear your cache to be sure before logging on. It is random due to new member verification.

It seems to only happen to new users. I have had at least 4-5 different new users I could have abused. When you go to the forum from Internet Explorer, without even signing in, occasionally you will be logged in as a new user (who apparently has just signed up to the forum).

If you don't notice this, and assume that you are logged in as yourself (ie didn't log out when you last left), and you post a message, it will post your message as being from that new user.

At that time, if you are evil, you could change that person's personal information (or probably even password) and assume another identity.

It sounds like some are doing this.
