5 posts before you can start a thread anywhere other then the lounge and regional forums seems reasonable.

How about until they reach 10 post, they will be promted with a frequently asked questions page with links and a search page that explains how to search. If they say that there question is not answered in the frequently asked questions and they have attempted a search then they may start a new thread.

swoope Mar 26, 2009 02:46 AM

i would go with a post count to start a thread, and a how many threads you can start with a no or low post count..

the info is out there. if you question is not something that was posted in the last two day the answer will come..

but how many in one day. new poster, what intake, exhaust, power mod, how does a turbo work, what color seats should i get, i hear syn oil is bad, what is premix, it a 15 offset going to fit, when will the sun rise, if i say i am going to buy something and dont did i waste someones time (asshole), what color rims, how does (anything in the fucking owners manual work!!) bitter on that one, gas mileage, octane, oil type, octane, and best of all my car wont start.

i am sure i am missing something. please post a sticky i have missed..

beers

why not have some sort of "Thumbs Up" or "Thumbs Down" buttons to rate (YouTube style) each post. If it gets enough down, the post will not be shown unless you click on it. I think this will help reduce the amount of thread crapping that must be read in order to find the good "nuggets" of information.

These ratings should be allowed to be "overruled" by an admin in the case of a zurg rush of "thumb downers" in a post that is actually good.

Don't think it will happen...just throwing my $0.02 on a potentially great advancement in Forum Technology.

I'd like to point something out, only 15 registered users have said no.

shazy Mar 26, 2009 09:58 PM

Doesn't the Rx-7 club have this as well? They have a post 10 times in order to view the picture. But we should do that and do this at the same time. It will make the ignorant and the unknowing smarter

DOMINION Mar 27, 2009 04:33 AM

Hey what about a no0b section for new people. Like they can view but only post questions over and over and over in the no0b section and all the stickys will have hyper links to the stickys in other threads so its kinda like a short cut.
What do you guys think about that? a lot of other sites do that.

I already suggested something like this...and it was to combat spammers though it could have been used to fight noobs too

I guess I see what all the fuss is about starting a new thread for topic that may have already been answered. This is an online forum for questions, comments, help, etc. The way I see it, if I don't want to read a particular thread, I don't click it. Everybody knows the 'search' feature is faulty and you don't always get the information you want unless you click a hundred different threads with only a mention of the key word you were looking for. It's exasperating to say the least. Instead of jumping on new members about it, just help them out by commenting on it or pointing them to a thread where they can most likely find the information they need. Not all searched threads are as cut and dry as 'foam on dipstick' (wow, that could be read a hundred different ways!). Just my .02 pennies. Cut people some slack.

Atilla Mar 27, 2009 10:52 AM

^you can always use the "advanced search" function or just search by title instead of searching by 'word' - if you search by word you'll get damn near a million posts of people just mentioning it. If you search by title, you're almost guarunteed to find what you're looking for. . .

that or if you go to each forum, you can use the search function there. It should be under "thread tools" or something like that. Also, if you go to advanced search, you can narrow down your search by specifying the forum it will most likely be in (i.e. - what rims should i get - should be in the wheel's forum)

WantedTwo Mar 27, 2009 01:53 PM

Not to mention people starting 100 threads on one subject is what's making the search feature worthless

I move to institute a minimum post count before you can post a new thread. The site is becoming more and more cluttered with people coming in and starting new threads on gas mileage, flooding, performance chips, ect. Having a minimum post count of say 5-10 posts to start a new thread would seriously curb some of this and kill random spammers. I think the only exceptions should be the lounge (for newbies to say hello) and the F/S section. Click yes if you agree.

Hey OP,

Maybe you should have searched a bit instead of starting another post about the same things :-P

I hope you're not being serious..... You tell me where those other two threads sound like what I'm proposing.... :banghead:

First post of the other two threads:

I was thinking to prevent spammers and such, is there a way to prevent someone's first post from showing up until a mod approves it? Then subsequent posts (after the first was approved) are normal in that they don't need approval.

Well, I just joined another vBulletin forum and they have an interesting method of keeping spam out.

I do not know if this forum does it since I joined it quite a while ago and do not remember or if it has been a new addition to all vBulletins. The first post does not appear until a moderator personally approves it. Hopefully this would keep out some spam and some of the dumb newbie posts.

First post of the other two threads:

and if you read my post regarding my original thread, i said it can be used to do what you're proposing with this thread.

so if they wouldn't implement it for that (spam-which was a real problem), why would noob-proofing the forums be more of a priority :-P
Even the 4th post in that thread suggests what you're suggesting.

*sigh* you're making my head hurt...

Here is something for you to think about; you are trolling. Plain and simple. You're trying to get credit for a different idea then yours simple because it will have the same outcome. I'm not citing a problem; I'm citing a solution to a problem. I really don't understand the motive behind you trying to pick a fight with me. Please, let this thread be, it is something in my opinion will help out the entire community and I don't want to see it closed because of a bunch of childish glory hounding. This is the last I’m going to speak about this. If you what to blast me PM me.

geez don't take it so personally. Just saying a minimum post count isn't an original idea...

pdxhak Mar 28, 2009 02:00 AM

I like the idea but it never really works. You see on other forums some thread where all the noobs reply with, "post 1", "post 2", "post 3" and so forth until they acquire their minimum post count.

There is no silver bullet for stupid questions.
