Make the search function work
1 Attachment(s)
I realized today, I may have been to hard on people who don't search.
I started a thread at the beginning of the year entitled "NEW Spec NC Miata". https://www.rx8club.com/general-automotive-49/new-spec-nc-miata-56548/ I wanted to find that thread. So I consulted the search function. I knew the thread was in General Automotive. I knew I started it. And, I had a vague Idea of the name of the thread. So I did this: https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...id=61817&stc=1 Should work right? NO I had to use NC* cause NC is too short and omitted. So what, should still bring something up. I searched a good 5 or 6 different terms before just going through all the threads I have started in GA. Now, maybe I don't know something about searching that would mean searching for the near identical title would not show up, if so, by all means, let me in on the secret. That was a very frustrating few minutes. EDIT: Incidentally searcing for NEW Spec NC Miata or "NEW Spec NC Miata" gives nadda. Seriously, WTF is that about. Thanks :) |
well, if you started it, you can search by user name and by threads started by
|
he did do that.
also, if you click on his name to see all posts by him, it only lists the last 500 posts (13 pages worth)...hardly the 2,500 posts that he has. weird. |
Even worse... People don't always give threads proper lables like that... Most times it's along the lines of "Hey, look what I found!" or something. Searching by content isn't easy, either. :-/

I to have had this problem. When I searched for info on how much the MS Wing blocks or doesn’t block your view out of the back window, I got several pages about the MS Wing and just about every other wing out there. I tried every way I could think to find what information had already been posted.
I then posted the thread asking if anyone knew. Someone replied with a link to a thread with exactly what I was looking for, even pictures of the view out the back window. I then searched again for this info to see what I had done wrong and the thread still didn’t show up. Maybe it’s me but I just can’t seem to make the search feature work very well. |
I think the major problem is that the search function is not Boolean. And you cant use NEAR like in Alta Vista, or look for words WITHIN a single post and not sprinkled all over a thread.

hell i am pretty good with the search and i couldnt find any way of finding that thread by title. If you just search by threads started by you it is currently 3rd on the list. But if you say search for thread titles with Miata in them started by you it cant find it. very strange. ill look into why. it may be that it is not something we can fix but is inherrent in the VBulletin

A google like search would be nice also. One where you can search for phrases. Most of the time I have an idea of what I'm looking for, so I can sift thru the crap to find the thread I want. But if your not searching for something you've read before, it can be kind of difficult.

Thanks for looking into it!! :ylsuper: |
i think with google.. there is a way to set it up so that google only searches your domain.. like rx8club.com
i think this would be a much better search than the normal forum search method... i had problems finding my own threads... or threads that i knew the names of too... |
