DIY Section?

How about a DIY section for the 8?

This would help out novices like me (In my case, I'll eventually want to attempt to install the MP3 player and/or MD player).

i think most of the "Tech & Performance" group of sections (Tech Garage through to Audio & Electronics) will be the place to find things, but sorted categorically... unless i'm wrong, which i could be, as there isn't any "official" plan to speak of, just whatever Toady & The Powers That Be feel like doing...

Hmmm.... I think a "how-to" type of section like the "garage" section of www.miata.net would work a little better for what you are suggesting. That way, we'd be able to keep things clear and organized when someone is looking for something.

How about a sub-section (not sure what it's called) like in the "RX-8 Discussion" forum ? (where the "dealership/ordering" sub-scetion was added).

Maybe each forum (if relevant) can have it's own "garage", "mods", or "DIY" sub-section that only the moderators can move topics to or ask the person who started the original post (with the DIY info) to re-post in-detail the steps involved. Once something is in this section, no other replies would be allowed (unless new or updated info would become available).

IMO, I think this would save on useless clutter/posts and endless searches.

I think a "HOWTO/FAQ" section would be extremely useful and popular. It would include things like MP3 player installation instructions, Homelink programming instructions, and lots of other "knowledge base" and DIY things that would build up over time.

A good example of this type of thing is the Tech section at Audiworld.com (http://www.audiworld.com/tech/).

That's similar to the "Garage" section of Miata.net that I was talking about.

By doing something like that, the moderators can do a better job of quality control on the content, and keep things in a more standard, consistent manner, which will make it easier to follow.

On the forums that I've seen where moderators just make something a sticky, everything is disorganized and hard to follow.

I'm totally down with the DIY idea - I've used the www.ptdoityourself.net for a while to do various and sundry things to my dad's cruiser, and when there's an article with good pics, it makes the job infinitely easier than deciphering the shop manual or playing it by ear. Couple that with some group buys and retail discounts and the forum would get really useful.
