I joined rx8club.com shortly after the political ban. Did we lose those members because they got banned for unforgivable bad conduct or did we lose them because they now spent all their time posting on political sites? If it was the former, then I say good-riddance.

As I stated before, I could care less about a bunch of political talk, but what I fail to see is if the political discussions were ITS OWN SECTION, away from the other discussion threads, why would anyone who opposes such topics even give a FVCK? Would they enter these sections just to view that which they so adamantly oppose? How do all these nay-sayers even know what goes on in a politcal discussion thread? Sounds to me that for something they so vigorously oppsed, they sure spent a lot of time in there.

Do the political discussers go into different threads and post, "I'm still pissed off from a discussion where SpeedERDoc handed me my ass, so now I thought I'd come in here and give ya'll grief"? NO.

Reminds me of the Southern Baptist here in the south, in their self-appointed righteousness, wanting to stamp out all the the titty bars in the area. If they don't enter such establishements, why would they care if other people wanted visit? "My morales and values WILL BE YOUR morales and values. I am closer to GAWD, therefore I know what's best for you."

I, personally, am not nay saying. Also, I personally spent time there because I liked to hear other peoples' opinion that were contrary to mine, but in a civilized manner, heated sometimes, but civilized, which I do not OPPOSE. This is just how the political forums went...just make remarks and not really addressing what was said previously. Pull your head out. We do not need a headline saying "THIS IS A POLITICAL FORUM". The viewers knew what threads were political and there were still idiots that had no business in there just making random comments that had nothing to do with the topic of discussion (this part is what I opposed since your having trouble.)

That is what the lounge is...its own section. The lounge already has and had a 'keep it cool' sub-line, so why didn't that help 'magically' police the threads before? "So let's make another separate section and headline it POLITICAL DISCUSSION and coddle it and protect it from everything else and have the administators check in on the kids and police all the flaming " and that will make it civil? They do not even control those of you that think spelling FVCK makes it okay to type the word in this forum. Just spell it, it's like bleeping words on the radio...like your so mysterious.

That is the whole point. It was no longer civil. Hell, if you want freedom of speech so badly, why not recall religious discussion?

I still love your photochopping, BTW.

RotoRocket 03-22-2006 02:08 PM

All political discussion does is mandate, by law of nature, that moderators and the site administrator have to mediate inevitable disputes, close threads, and otherwise waste time babysitting people who will never agree, and who will always resort to nasty arguments.

Raz, I think you're overlooking a key point. Yeah, it's a free country, but this is a private forum. If the owners think it's too much trouble to put up with all the baggage that political discussions bring, well, it's their forum so they can set the rules. Being a free country means the forum owners are free to make their own rules and the forum users are free to go elsewhere if they feel differently.

I hope I don't remind you of the Southern Baptists in the south trying to stamp out everything incompatible with their point of view. I lived in Nevada for a while (which might be the ultimate live and let live state) and managed to get along fine with plenty of folks both more liberal and more conservative (there's fewer of the llatter though). I don't feel compelled to impose my beliefs on everyone I meet, but I do feel compelled to respect the 'rules of the house' whether I am visiting someone else's home, church or forum.

BlueEyes 03-22-2006 02:55 PM

I just don't understand why people feel there is a need to moderate it. If you make a section for it, explain that there will be no moderating, then who cares. The people who want to talk politics will go there knowing what they're getting into. Some people will get into pissing contest, and some people won't. If you get your feelings hurt, boo hoo, get over it.

Jedi54 03-22-2006 03:00 PM

Much anger I sense in Raz...

On a serious note: Why bring back all the flame wars? YES, some people will stay away if they're not interested in politics BUT there are thing that will catch their eye. They'll see a topic that quite possibly could interest them (when they click 'new posts') and then it's all :flamed: :cussing:

It's not worth the hassle that those threads bring to our community. Besides, you said yourself that only a handful of mods are truly driven to be here. Do you think they want the extra workload of policing a forum like that?! Heck no, I can only imagine how much work people like Zoom44 already put into this....

Get more mods you say?? Who? People who only want to talk about politics?! That doesn't make them worthy of being a mod...

I guess what I'm trying to say is:
1) I'm glad those flame wars are over
2) I love politics but I find other places to discuss them.

I assure you, I'm not having problems understanding your prospective. I simply chose not to define the details in which my counter-observations were based, lending direction of the observation (in case YOU are having trouble). Your interlaced depictions support what I've been inferring as the source of why certain topics are not successful in certain arenas. YOU chose to attack MY style or perspective instead of presenting your own or being satisfied with what you had already posted. Cynicism and sarcasm makes for escalating confrontations, NOT logical, even keeled debate.

I know damn well how to spell FVCK. I chose to spell it FVCK, who gives a FUCK? It's a text deviation from reality (normality) in much the same manner as photochopped images, which I find entertaining due to it's absurd trendiness. I never said it was alright to use it in here, but it is not against the Terms of service (see item 8. "If you are posting a new thread, do not use vulgarity in the title of the thread. Inside a thread, profanity will only be allowed if used in a controlled manner, and not directed at a particular forum member. Again, just try and be respectful of other forum members").

I'm fully aware of what your point is, but you're guilty of the same infractions your opinion is based (being civil). Leveling personal attacks on me does not reinforce your perspective, it merely provides a sampling of what the problem was. With this logic, ANY topic for discussion would eventually cross over into flaming...such as THIS one. I don't know where you think I should pull my head out of, but wherever it is, it's there because I want it to be.

p.s. It's not freedom of speech I want. I already have it and excercise it quite frequently, thank you. :bootyshak

p.s. thanks for the compliment on photochopping. I have fun at it. :)

I really have nothing against the Southern Baptist per se. I don't appreciate ANY facet of society appointing themselves the morale police of others.

I respect the rules of the house. I haven't violated any of the Term of Service. I don't talk about politics or religion or street racing. I'm just offering up an opposing view of why various discussions could work if approached differently. My opinion.....everyone has one. May not be the best or the prettiest, but it's mine.

Cool, I can respect that. Opposing views are good - glad you clarified; I don't think I understood you quite right at first. I've got no problem with your (on anyone's) opinion. :Peace:

Now, your avatar, that's certainly not the prettiest, but to each their own. ;)

This is the whole point. You call what you said earlier an opinion...yet use phrases like "who gives a fuck" and "horseshit". Civilized...good try. I am not trying to be civilized here. It is not required to some one who claims others' opinions as nay sayers. Obviously lots of people gave a fuck...the reason political threads are gone and for this thread.

Also, you seem veteran enough to know that this is no where near FLAME, and 'pull your head out' is definitely nothing to be squeamish over, much less consider a "personal attack".

It's funny that you quote line 8, but miss the whole end of the statement. Respect other forum members...your original post did nothing of the sort.

You're really not intelligent enough to piss me off, so I don't know what your agenda is here. Why do you feel the need to direct your perspective TO me? Just state your opinion, then STFU. I stated my opinion, but didn't single you out or direct it at any one person.

"Civil" was your word and not mine. I only used it to illustrate the hypocresy of your statement when you said "no longer civil", then went on rambling with your sarcasm directed at me. Keep rambling....words can be manipulated to support ANY perspective or hypothesis. Doesn't mean they're accurate, only that they are the representation of their author. Who gives a fvck? :D:

They no longer post here since political discussions were banned. Basically, banning politics drove the lounge into the gutter. I use to always check the lounge out as it was the hot spot. Now, it's the lamest forum on this site.

Not really. ANY discussion can regress to this level if opinions are directed at another person's views instead of addressing the topic at hand.

RIGHT WAY

Member A) I think it's perfectly natural to eat meat. H3CK Yeah!
Member B) I believe eating meat is wrong and we should all be vegeterians.

By the way....glad yer okay. Heard you guys caught hell down under.

That seems like a strange reason to stop posting here at all - I guess I don't understand their point of view.

Me - I didn't seek or join this site for a lounge - I joined for the RX8 specific info. I skip most of the lounge threads, but read some. I wouldn't classify it as gutter - just noise and random, non-RX8 thoughts from the other members. :dunno:

Highly ironic! ......and funny! Got quite a few laughs. It's further evidence to me that political discussions would add no value to a site like this (not that it's up to me, I just have my own opinion).

Ole Spiff 03-23-2006 12:43 PM

This whole thread perfectly exemplifies the reason why the moderators shut down political discussions. Nothing good is accomplished, no one wins....it just degenerates into anger and "No I didn't" / "Yes you did" type of posts.

I love a good political discussion and was one of those that participated in them here before they were shut down. I miss some of the exchanges but overall I have to agree with the decision of the moderators. Just because the forum is free for us doesn't mean it's free; the owner is paying for the bandwidth. When I see endless, pointless bickering going on in a political thread with over 5,000 posts and no end in sight... I agree the owner shouldn't have to pay for that bandwidth usage. This IS a private forum being generously provided to us by an RX8 enthusiast; we who use it freely should respect that.

Oh...and this isn't a democracy; a democracy is majority rule. The U.S.A is a republic; rule by elected representation irregardless of majority status. :D
