MS Cold Air Intake

What improvement, if any, after you install the Mazdaspeed Cold Air Intake? Do you feel a diff of, at least, 20-30% difference or just 10-15% improvement?

Please share your thots on this. Thanks!

Are you talking actual speed improvement or "I like my car better now" improvement? I don't think CAI gives much performance gain. Honestly though, I think there are a number of threads on the subject.

10%= 27HP gain? I dont want to even think about 20-30% gains on Bolt on's? Maybe a turbo or nos.

You're going to see around a 0.016% performance increase from it.

besides fuel management, most NA mods gain +/- 5 hp range.

10% would be more like 23 horsepower, and if you could get that from a CAI then Mazda has hobos engineering for them.

After a few beers it all feels the same on the butt dyno.

Even less... most people seem to have ~185 whp.

Mazda engineers did a very good job of getting everything they could out of the engine. I had a long conversation with the guys from racing beat when I was thinking about getting a ECU upgrade. They talked me out of it for the price and the actual gain in horsepower was minimul. If you want the intake then get it....just for the love of the car.

The Mazda 6 has some pretty good gains with intakes... ~15whp is the norm for a regular intake, and with C-PE (kind of a fuel management) for $500 you get 25 whp and wtq. Pretty sweet deal

With the MS6 you gain ~30 with a straight pipe too.

Edit: I got that from a dyno plot from a site selling the straight pipe. So it may be inaccurate.

Is that "claimed" hp gain, or did someone actually dyno that?

I'll bet you a Pepsi that it's very inaccurate.

Well, it is a turbo car, so I can see 10% gains from it. So 30 hp isn't out of the question.

Typically, when the hp gain is from the people advertising it, it is complete BS. Anyone can modify before and after dyno results. Changes in weather, humidity and temperature can modify a dyno of the same car by over 10 hp alone.

Best example I can give. SR Motorsports claimed a 15 hp gain with thier pulleys... I gained 2.

C-PE is very much like Racing Beat. They are pretty reliable with their whp dynos. No BS there.

People have gotten very close to 200whp with just the intake. And they dyno pretty close to what RX-8s dyno at (3.0L V-6s).

I don't care what you say, but nobody is going to get much horsepower going from a 4 pound crank pulley to a 2 lb one. It's just dumb.

If it was underdriven a lot, that would be a different story. But it's not, so it's junk.

I have heard the Mazdaspeed intake -- it sounds good. The HP increase is prob minimal, but the sound is nice.

I have the AEM, which is the intake that Mazda slapped their logo on, and I would say that gains are minimal. It does seem to pull a little more in the higher RPM range, despite my pessimism about the mod. I bought it because I will eventually be putting on a high-flow cat and new exhaust, where it will actually make a difference. The sound the thing makes is pretty badass though. When I took it to the dealer, one of the techs asked if I had a borla on my car. He was surprised when I told him I just changed the intake.

Milage-wise, I get about 27 mpg on long trips, and around 20 around town. I would say that's about 1-2 mpg more than I had before the mod. For the money, I think it's a great mod. You may want to consider the AEM though and save yourself $70.

Hope this helps!
