Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., has newly developed two new-generation six-cylinder V-type engines for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicles featuring powerful performance and improved environmental friendliness.

The 3.5L VQ35HR and 2.5L VQ25HR engines will be built at Nissan's Iwaki Plant in Fukushima Prefecture and will be equipped in the all-new Skyline to be released this autumn in Japan, as well as the US where the model is sold as the Infiniti G35.

Featuring newly designed engine blocks and other key components, the engines offer smooth transition to top-in-class level engine speed of 7,500 revolutions per minute drawing upon the "smooth transition" concept of the popular VQ engine, the only engine in the world to appear on Ward's 10-Best Engines list for 12 consecutive years.

The engines achieve a 10% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to vehicles equipped with the existing VQ engine and top-in-class Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle level emissions. SU-LEVs have 75% or less nitrogen oxide (NOx) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions than those stipulated by Japan's 2005 exhaust emission standards.

The letters "HR" in VQ35HR and VQ25HR stand for "high revolution" and "high response."

Nissan began VQ engine production in 1994 and has produced a cumulative total of 5.5 million units as of last fiscal year, ended March 31, 2006.

Main specifications of the VQ35HR and VQ25HR engines:

Smooth transition to top-in-class level engine speed of 7,500 rpm

Reduction of weight and friction through adoption of asymetrical piston skirt configuration

Reduction of piston-side force through lengthening of con rod

Addition of rudder frame, newly-designed cylinder block with significantly improved rigidity

Thrilling revving sound and top-in-class output

Adoption of perfectly symmetrical intake system

Adoption of continuously variable valve timing control (CVTC) for intake side and electromagnetic valve timing control (e-VTC) for exhaust side

Reduction of intake resistance through adoption of symmetrical twin intake system and straight intake port

Adoption of isometric exhaust manifold and perfectly symmetrical exhaust system

Improvement of fuel-efficiency and emission cleanliness

Reduction of friction through adoption of world's first hydrogen-free, diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating

Adoption of catalyst substrate with ultra-low heat mass, super-ignition iridium spark plug and fast light-off O2 sensor control

 

I'm not a Nissan fan, but those are really good engines. No mention of even a percentage power increase in the article. Wonder what those will be at...

 

Very smart move by Nissan as least from a financial standpoint. They can spread out the R&D cost for the V6 across several platforms.

 

This is why GM should "team up" with Nissan.

i hate the skyline :P but my favorite car ever is a skyline(hakosuka) and love the s15 (only siliva i will ever like)

 

Still wish they kept on making the Silvia's in the states.. the S15 is the last one right or most recent? Just the tail lights and that aggressive front end. Nissan would be smart to bring it back since alot of drifters are finding old 240SX's and modifing them up for drifting (though one guy in my area has his set up for drag my god that thing has *****!)

 

yep, i went home couple months back to visit family, couple of my friend own . they let me drive it, i never thought i would admit liking a silvia to them. but that car is very awesome. hehe but i still crap on the s14 and down

 

Hey now I was gonna buy a old 240sx for around 2k and mod that **** up haha.. but when I got 10k saved up I said screw it and said I'm buying a newer car hence my 8. They should still bring it back to the states. Have the 350Z be the straightline monster, the Silvia be the handling machine, and the Gt-R be their top of the line god lol. Will never happen but we can dream damnit and dream I shall!!

 

nice rant but to get back on topic i hope we finally get to see some numbers from the GTR engine, it has been under wraps for along time.

 

Its nice to see Nissan getting back in the upper rpm range again,7500RPM. Thats what the ultra smooth VG30,VG30TT was making when it was i the 300Z/TTZ.

I knew Nissan could do it with the VQ, and they did, took them over 10 years to do it, but they finally did it.

Rumor has it, the new G35 and the current Z for next year may be getting a boost in power from these new motors,rumor has it , 330-350HP.That would be almost tempting to trade my 8 in and go back to my Nissan roots, if the rumor deems true.

 

The VQ35HR was revealed already. It's going into the new G35 and makes 306hp. I have no idea about this VQ25 though.

 

I had a 96' 300zx and I could have sworn the rev limiter kicked on at 7250.
