it only last about 10 mins, the server is probably backing up itself

It happens every day at about 6:15 EDT, so I assume it is, as dillsrotary says, a system backup. It's a pain if you're on the site when that happens 'cause your last-time-visited time is cleared and the new postings you haven't read lose their bold typeface.

I've seen it at other times of the day as well. I also figured it was some sort of a system maintenance thing.

Enormous pain! I also have had problems at around 5:15 where the site simply stops responding; I had inferred that was system backups....
