Well I'm about over the trips to the dealer.......04 has been towed to the dealer 6 times in two years now....Flooded...no start,........I've owned the car since brand new two years ago..I have a whole...6k miles on it in two years now.. So for every 1k miles..it goes to the dealer..Just got it back today,,.. They did a different flash or something,,,,what a Dogggggggg .. 6speed with all the trimings...used to come to life at the 6,200 rpm mark atleast...... NOw nothing,,,just flat no frills. My dealer keeps telling me I don't drive the car enough,,...Like thats my fault... Looks like I will be selling it,,.. Took delivery of my new 06 Porsche Cayman S just last night... What a shame...I've done so many things to my 8... It for sure looks a million times better than when she was stock,,.. My suspension setup is dialed inperfect.....ugggggggggg...Piece of,,,,...............

Well, spending twice as much for the Porche is likely to get you at least twice as pissed-off since while they are great driving cars their reliability isn't so great. Hopefully, the one you get will be the exception.

 

This goes against anything and everything I've ever read/heard about Porsches in the last 25 years I've been a car enthusiast.

 

I've got an '04, and other than the creaking driver's seat that doesn't seem to ever get resolved, mine is perfect - has never flooded, and starts like lightning every time. They did upgrade my battery last year after I complained of it cranking slowly, but that doesn't seem to have done much.

Sorry you have had a bad experience. I would bet that fewer than 200 miles has plenty to do with it. Are you shutting it off before it is fully warmed?

i've put over 12k miles on mine this past year, and the only thing mine has been into the dealer for was the first oil change (during which the replaced the battery...which didn't help with the long startup problem for me), once it had a CEL, to which they replaced the plugs. and the recalls last july/august...basically, just maintanence. might take it into get the starter replaced. other than that, its been great (knock on wood).

hate to say it, but it sounds like a P.E.B.S.A.W. issue.

No engine mods other than mazdaspeed flywheel and Revi...intake..Yea the problem is I just dont drive it enough.....they tell me a rotory has to be driven to keep it running... so for me...just not a good choice of engine...I just bought it for an extra car....a toy.... jump in it to get this or that... Ive always shut the engine down with reving to 4 grand for atleast 10 seconds...just like my dealer showed me.. I love the 8 when it's running good,....my suspension is like bammmmm right there.... So if anyone is looking for a 2004 sunlight silver with only 6,000 miles on it....drilled rotors, hawk hps pads, racing beat front/rear sway bars, end links, areo flares, app pakage, full tint, Mazdaspeed flywheel, Revi intake, short shifter, lighted shift ****, Mazdaspeed carbon fiber front and rear strut tower braces, spec d shocks, racing beat springs....Told you I loved the car....just cant deal with it not starting when I need it to.......

 

I can't believe people here are still flooding their engines.

 

This may have been asked&answered elsewhere, but why do rx-8's flood and not sevens? I've never had the problem with my seven, nor heard of it on other rotary powered cars.

Well if one follows the reccomendations of Mazda and considering all the info here on the forum regarding what not to do, the only reason I can see is user error.
I know that comment probably won't go over well with some here but it's just my opinion so don't get your panties in a wad. For the record, I've got around 11,000 miles on mine with no floods and flawless performance since day one..

 

7s flood. all cars flood. A friend had an FB and has an FD. Both have flooded. Granted, the FB flooded more often than the FD.

 

No power = clogged CAT
Clogged CAT = Not being driven hard enough

I'm sure all cars flood, but personally in 16 years of driving I've never seen a single car that was flooded. And have never done anything intentionally to stop them from flooding. On the rx-7 board people's cars flood occasionally, but its usually because they screwed something up when working on it.

I see threads all the time about 8's flooding, so I just assumed they are overly flood-sensitive.

 

The FB would just flood, but i think that's because it had a faulty carb that was leaking fuel. The FD flooded when pulled out to wash. My dad flooded my mom's trailblazer and my grandmother's sentra when pulling them out to wash them.

The reason the rx8 has had problems is because the starter that was originally used was slightly underpowered, and now when an rx8 comes in flooded, the dealer is supposed to deflood it, check the plugs and change them if necessary, check the flash revision and make sure that is up-to-date, and install the new starter, which i believe is actually just an rx7 starter. not sure if the 2006 rx8s are shipping with the "new" starter.

 

A few people subscribe to that technique to avoid flooding, but I can tell you first hand that it does not work if you shut down your car after reving it. I always rev my engine (warmed up or not) but one day I moved it and shut it off before it was warmed up (Had a guy who was installing FIOS in my garage and had to get the car out of the way). It flooded anyway...

On the good side, that got me new plugs, batt and starter. Car runs a lot nicer with the upgrades.

 

JR, the Porche is a great sports car, however, they are prone to oil leaks (especially the Boxter) and other engine issues. Problem is, there is no such thing as a small expense when it comes to this car. I'm not trashing the car, just stating what I learned through friends who have owned them, what I learned while shopping around (I have owned a lot of cars over the years, a number of them sprort cars) and a look at consumer reports history.

 

I used to own two 993's and a 944. Every other month something else broke. AC units repeatedly failed. Automatic window motors, rack and pinion steering, bushings constantly being replaced, transmission died in one of them too.

Now, to be fair, I was traveling 50 miles each way to work and I drove them hard - also this was in NJ (extreme temps, snow, acid rain, etc).

Regardless, I no longer have a desire to buy Porsche.
