Thanks guys, although I think I've had enough birthdays now! Update is that I've moved on from Darwin, drove the RX8 all the way and am now set up in Melbourne with a new job as of 3 Jan this year. I'll be in Melb for some time now (min 5 years with my work) and should be meeting some of the Vic RX8 guys this Sunday.

Some Trip info for you all:

1. Got the RX8 up to 240km/h on a nice straight stretch of the Stuart Hwy with good visibility and no speed limit north of Alice springs. I had to stop as the road was getting too rough at that speed. Interestingly it takes some time to get to that speed, so some extra torque to get there quicker would be nice Hymee

2. Fuel consumption at a steady 150km/h is around 15-16L/100km, as soon as you get back to 110km/h it drops to just under 10L/100km. Must have something to do with the tertiary injectors kicking in I think.

3. Hymee's Grille kit was worth it's weight in gold. I filled up both the radiator and oil cooler air entry with locusts several times. I would have had a hell of a time getting them off the radiator if the grille wasn't there.

Yep. Car was travelling "legally". It isn't really my story to tell, either, although I furnished Gomez with the pic privately.

Now, as a precursor to the story, what are the documented top speeds "officially" recorded in Aus prior to this?

I ask, as this car had a "mod" that might have helped a tiny bit. It also had some mods that really slowed it down until they were removed, and put back to stock. A real testament to the research that has gone into parts of this cars design/engineering.

You go Revolver...not that I am condoning dangerous driving but compared to the OTHER drivers on the road we have had driver training...provided by the maker of our car so we CAN get the best out of them safely.....

Me I haven't gotten over the speed limit...but this will change when Max meets Mallala!!

Ps...we got a FIAT PUNTO up to silly speeds in italy....after we pumped the tyres up!! And I managed to break the land speed record down the M1 in a Diesel Vauxhall.....forgot about mph not being kph!! Blond moment was when I asked Bruce why everyone else was going so slow!! doh!!

Just kidding. Although I think the courses are a fantastic kick in the pants reminder of common sense driving, there's no substitute for being sensible about matters of time and place for 'spirited' driving.

Interesting story there Hymee/Wildcard!! I haven't removed any of the intake ducting from my car, probably explains why I had reasonable fuel efficiency (considering!) between Darwin and Alice Springs, and was able to achieve a similar speed. I sat on close to 5000 RPM for the whole day cruising at 150KPH and was getting between 15-16L/100Km. I did have an overheating prob however. I got the coolant light coming on intermittantly in the early afternoon, which has two meanings I think, low coolant or hot coolant. I check my levels and it was ok, so had to be a temp warning. The reason (I wish I had a photo) was I had TOTALLY filled up my air intake with locusts (Trapped very well by the Hymee grill) and only minimal air flow was getting in. Other than that, I drove the RX8 in the territory in mostly very hot and humid conditions for 2 years without any problems at all. Enjoy the Dry Season Wildcard!

 

Oh Wildcard, one of these on the front of your car may keep the stone chips from the roadtrains to a minimum on your weekly sanity run up to Darwin (Sorry about the pic quality)
