Transporting 4 V710's to AutoX

Okay, so I'm already thinking about next Spring...

How does everyone get there auto-x wheels to an event? Sounds like some people cram them in. This will most likely be my solution, so helpful hints would be appreciated...

I haven't heard anything really positive regarding the trailer hitch solution(s) out there.

There's a guy in the Philly reagion who puts a surf rack on his Elise. Pretty wild seeing a Lotus with 4 tires on the roof. However, he has the advantage that his roof is fiberglass. Would a roof rack support that much weight without denting the RX-8's roof?

Other ideas?

Four tires fit without too much trouble into the back seats. That's what we've been doing.

What I do is remove the rear seats and cram all four wheels / tires in the back.

4 mounted 245/35-18 V710s fit in the back seat no issue. I have the seat pretty far back and still travelled 1500+ miles one way with tires in my normal driving position.

I would suggest getting some good tire bags to keep the tires in.

Since I posted that I think I carried them on top once. Its just so much easier to put them in the back seat.

I use the heavy duty 55 gallon contractor trash bags, they serve dual duty for storing the tires as well as protecting the interior, but I also throw a big quilt over the seats for extra protection, it's long enough that it will fold over the top and conceal the tires during the trip

if you pack carefully you can pretty much bring everything you need for an event in the car, it's one of the things that makes the RX-8 an excellent dual duty vehicle

Yeah, agreed. We had a large craftsman floor jack, two jackstands, four tires on wheels, two weekend bags, a big rubbermaid tote with tools and gear, helmets, the camera equipment and still had enough room to put the seats in a comfortable setting and drive several hundred miles. Love the RX-8 for its utility.

If the event is withing a few hours of me I just drive on the tires. If I was going to put tires in the car I would use these: http://www.blackwatchracing.com/shop...products=motor

I have a set and they are nice.

very true, but $225/set of 4 is hard to swallow when I can get 32 HD contractor trash bags for $12 from Costco that last me a year with multiple sets of tires

that's the difference in a 3 lb racing muffler right there

Cheap

You spent how much on wheels/tires/shocks/header/ecu and you cant come up with $225 for tire bags. You better ask for a raise.

One nice thing about the bags is if you like to fly in and codrive someones car you can check them on a flight. Chiles did that last year. Or if you are in a band you can pack you drums in them...

In addition to all that, we could fit two people in as well.

easy to talk when you're not paying $1000/set for tires, and considering I traveled with as many as three sets of wheels/tires there's nothing cheap about coughing up $775 for some fancy zippered bags so throw another $20 in for shipping boxes

there was nothing cheap about how much I spent last year even having a codriver, it's just a matter of where it was spent

I'm still out a couple of grand on swaybars that have yet to be delivered

I can't wait to be putting those short Kumhos in the backseat this year...even 275 Hoosiers of about OEM circumference fit pretty easily.

You can also get 2 in one backseat, one in the trunk, and one in the passenger seat if you need a rear seat open...like I did for a trip or two with my daughter.

I have the 265 v700's... One in the trunk, two behind the passenger seat, and one behind the drivers seat. Much easier to transport tires in the rx8 than the miata.

Fancy tire bags IMO are a waste of money, just one more thing to deal with once you get to the event. I'm much less worried about someone stealing a couple bucks worth of trash bags than I am worrying about a couple hundred bucks of tire totes...

I'm just a hack, though... guess those tire totes are required to win a nat'l championship...

yeah, they're thin and tear easily, but good enough for storing tires

Consensus says 4 245/35/18 V710's fit in the back seats easily, but does anyone have tips on securing the tires in the backseat. Has anyone creatively used the child seat tiedowns?

With my luck, I'll end up panic braking on 495 because of some DC-area rubbernecking moron, and a couple of tires will go flying around the car.

sliding the front seats back or reclining them back should be sufficient, here's not much room left between the tires and the normal front seat position

unless you're worried about flipping over

yeah, I would still put them in a plastic bag first, the open center area will let you rub off brake dust, dirt, etc. onto the interior otherwise

The "wheel felts" they're selling will take car of the open center issue. I'm sure cardboard cutouts would do nearly as well. In all, those look like a pretty decent deal, especially compared to the BlackWatch bags. I may pick up a set after Christmas.

The plastic bag storage is a good idea within the Totes if you have them. Help prevent deteriation. Plus, plastic should last a little longer as a combination of each.
