What kind of fuel consumption are people getting? I've been running my '8 in for the last few weeks, and it's got about 2000km on it, but I'm only getting about 350km for a tank. I fill up on the fuel warning light so it pretty consistently takes 50L of fuel. I'm using BP Ultimate (ie. 98 RON) and it's all city driving but obviously very easy going since I was running it in. Reading the international forums, there seems to be a huge variation in fuel consumption, and there seems to be the "magic mileage" change where the car magically becomes more economical at around 10000km. The economy I'm getting now is about what I was expecting, slightly better than, say, an XR6 Falcon which gets about 350km for a tank of 60L.

What kind of economy are people getting from a tank of fuel, particularly for city driving? Does it really get better? How big a difference does hard driving make? Does anyone know how much fuel there is between the fuel light and empty?

 

i've got 11000km on my car , and i'm also getting about 350k/tank. 60% city drive.

 

14.5k on the clock and I'm getting between 400 and 450 a tank, I also fill up when the "no beer tonight" light comes on.

 

I have long term records going back to Aug 03 -- 12.6L/100k -- similar to Mazda claims. Search in this forum for my charts and records ---yours, in **** retentiveness...timbo :o

 

I am getting between 300 -350 a tank. I now have 40,000km.

For me the economy is *****.

 

It comes down to how you drive, and where you drive. I'm still getting around 11.7L/100km on an easy 50km/day outer urban commute and shoperama with my wife on the weekends.

 

Having attempted to keep up with you on the Old Pac Hwy I think I might know the reason why Gibbo.

 

Hmmm, OK, so some people are getting 50-100km/tank more than me. I'm thinking it's the amount of traffic vs highway driving that people do. I can't imagine driving much easier than I have been the last few weeks - there would be no point in owning an '8 if I did. So while driving style obviously must have a big effect, I suspect stop/start driving is the other major cause.

 

I'm averaging around 12L/100km... most of my driving to work and back is at freeway speeds though.

You are not alone.

First the bad news, fuel economy if stuck in an urban cycle doesn't really improve. I do 7km to work but it involves 2 stops along the way to drop off kids plus nose -to-tail traffic with stop-start 1st & 2nd gear.
Typically in this mode I get 300-330kms a tank (after 11,000km).

I accept that my travel pattern is a major contributor to the poor economy. Short journeys with low gears and lots of stops doesn't do the car justice. The car burns a bit warming up and then never gets the real value.

The schizophrenic fuel gauge doesn't help with perceptions of fuel use - it will frequently move up and down anywhere between almost 2 to 3 bars during a trip.

The good news is that fuel consumption doesn't degrade too badly when you mash the go peddle (when traffic conditions permit). So you can still have fun and not worry too much about consumption. Remember a redline a day (at least) keeps the grin on your face!

Even better news is get it on the motonway in 5th & 6th gear. Economy almost doubles down to ~12.xl/100km. My best is 11.67l/100km and my worst is 20.59l/100km and my average over 10845km is 15.81l/100km (yes I am as **** as timbo!)

My warning light comes on when there's between 7-9 litres left in the tank - based on my filing up when light comes on.

 

I'm with Kiwimeat. nearly exact same circumstances, and almost spot on fuel usage, only I've done 5700km.

Gotta remind myself to do more driving and less work.

 

I have 7,000K's now and I get 350k's if I run it right to empty and dont leave eltham (hilly suburbia). My wife drives it for a few weeks at a time while I am away and gets 500k with 90% freeway and would struggle to get it past 4000Rpm.

I get similar to you OzRX8. I do a lot of short suburban top start type of driving. I don't like to accelerate slowly either. Fuel consumption on country runs is pretty good at 10.2l/100 km.

 

435km full tank, odometer 1700km+

 

I seems to get more km/tank with the DSC off, with same fuel and same driving style. average 380k/tank with DSC on vs 420k/tank with DSC off.

DSC off in the wet is so much fun, when you figured out how to control the slide.

oh yes........

because you are more than likely to pick up crap at the bottom of the fuel tank and block the filter on the fuel pump

 

I know, I know, I should fill up early, but it just so happens that the "cheap" fuel day coincides perfectly with the light. Extra $2.50 a week otherwise.

 

I had a detailed post about a year ago on my consumption after I got the cat replaced. From memory it was over 500ks/tank when purely highway (approaching 10L/100). Around Sydney streets its more like 350-380.

And this weekend just gone at Wakefield: half a tank for 70k's

 

Crikey, Muzz -- that's a bit heavy! I got 95k for half a tank

 

I filled up in Armidale this morning, and not again till Nudgee (Brisbane Nth) this afternoon. Need to check all my dockets etc, but it was >500km on 'bout 60L.
