a- the remote fob will not unlock the doors while the engine is running.

b. there was no sound at all? if not then it is not a battery or starter problem. it is most likely eitehr an ignition switch problem or a neutral safety switch problem. either way it would be an ignittion switch circuit issue. check fuses etc make sur eyou clutch is depressed fully.

Weak battery. Trunk not fully closed and light on which drained the battery? Don't drive the car often enough?

One of the Mazda-recommended replacement batteries is the Interstate MTP-35 which goes for about $70. There is also a newer recommended battery, but I don't know the brand or model number. If you car is still under warranty, tell your dealer about your problem and they may replace the battery for free.

call mazda roadside assistance, tow the car to dealer, and dealer should replace battery with the updated one under warranty

The Optima Yellow-top 35 series is a great battery for this car. Especially if you only drive it infrequently. It withstands deep discharge far better than a conventional car battery. And, it's non-spillable so you never have to deal with corrosion or adding water.

Mazda does now carry a better battery than the original RX-8 battery so you might be able to get that at no cost.
