Well yesterday I drove up to pick up my friend who is visiting from Italy, when we left his house, I started the car, which felt fine, when I put the clutch in it felt really light, and when I tried to put it into gear it resisted and then sound like gears were grinding, I immediately put it back into neutral, and after gently experimenting I realized that the clutch was busted, so I called the tow truck got it to the dealer however they were closed at that time. Luckily they have an early bird box so I dropped off the keys, information, and a letter explaining what happened. When they called back the next day they said that the springs that connected the clutch were completely disconnected and one was gone. Have you ever heard of this happening, on any car?

 

Are you sure they said it was the springs, and not the bolts connecting the clutch pressure plate? Loose bolts, apparently improperly torqued at the factory, are a known problem; several people here experienced symptoms similar to yours and loose bolts were the cause. There is no TSB for this issue, though.

No they spesifically said that it was not the bolts, and I Have heard fo that problem, the boly usually fail at holding one of the plates in the clutch mechanism, not the springs themselves.

 

Yes, this is happening to many of us with cars built in 8/03 & 9/03. Usually the failure is a slow process which causes clutch and ultimately transmission failure. My car was in the shop a month ago for trans problems and the tech found the springs in the pressure plate were broken loose and the clutch was worn out. I had to pay for the clutch disk. The car had 12K miles on the odo. Mazda attributes the transmission to driver abuse.

This exact thing happened to my 1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R about 8 yrs ago. It's not terribly uncommon in a manual tranny.

 

Funny I should see mention of the "loose bolt" problem. I experienced it the day I bought it. Had to have it towed in couple days later and sure 'nuff..they found a loose bolt in the tranny!

 

yeah that loose bolt problem was a blunder
