The Tyrrell P34 was a 6-wheel formula 1 car in the 70 that won an F1 race and finished 2nd in several more. The theory is that there is a larger contact patch giving more front traction. Also in F1 the wheels were only 10 inches. This gave and advantage since the least aerodynamic part of an open wheel race car is the front tires. The car only lasted 1 year because nobody would make 10 inch F1 tires for 1 team.
