okay i've been looking into things and i relaly can't figure out which is the best scan tool for cars (i know ours use a can)

is it better to get one you can use with a laptop or even a plam..or is one that comes with it's own lill handheld doohiki better? inquiring minds want to know.

i know Hymee (spelling) has one you can use with a laptop but i think it is only set up for can (not sure who uses what protocol for their cars).

just asking what people have used and can comment on is good. thanks D:D

I have the Autoenginuity unit and it is awesome. I have the Windows laptop version but you can also get for Palm. The Speedtracer functions are a blast -- rolling dyno, 0-60 times, etc.

I got the wireless Bluetooth option -- no cables or wires needed. I just strap my laptop down in the passenger seat, plug-in the scan unit to the car port and go.

hymee is good if you want to do a digital dash

CANscan is simply awesome for datalogging basically everything there is on the car as fast as the CAN bus operates

 

The sCANalyser serial interface has no problems keeping up with the data rates of data coming back on current CAN bus vehicles. Even our double sample rate for the RX-8 doesn't even come close to saturating the serial link between our interface and the computer. Plus with a serial interface this makes it easier to interface with devices that can't act as a USB host (e.g. most Pocket PCs).

Logging performance on the RX-8 is not limited by the CAN bus, but by how long it takes for the PCM to respond to a request for data.

Can someone post a log file from the USB version of CanSCAN... I would like to see if it is faster than what we're doing over serial.

I'm resurrecting this because I'm looking at getting a CAN scan tool for my 8. Searching around the forum and some of the vendor site I'm torn between the Hymee Scanalyser from Mazdaparts.com and the Auto Enginuity ScanTool from Vividracing.com.

I wanted to get some feedback from folks that have either of these tools on whether they have been happy with them and what limitations they have found. My primary goals are to read CEL's (had one this weekend during the monthly drive) and log engine data to analyze.

I like the fact that the Hymee tool is based around the RX-8 and the digital gauge readout is cool.

I like the Autoenginuity's bluetooth feature and the dyno feature. (I have a gtech so it's not a breaking point for me though.) It doesn't say anything about the Mazda specific codes and I wonder if it has them all or not.

So are there any problems or limitations I should understand about either of these units? I'm not sure how to accurately compare them.
