How much radio do you have to keep for the AC to work?

How much radio do you have to keep for the AC to work?

Took most of the radio apart today, still having trouble getting the AC / display to work. I though you could just keep the board that's part of the faceplate and ditch the rest of it, but no go.
I need the main board from the radio that attaches to the faceplate? Does it just provide power, or is the logic for the screen on this board?
That kinda sucks because they join in a 'T'. Very inconvenient to hide away.
Is there some secret I'm missing?
