Please post pics of child seats/strollers that you use..have seen... or know that would work in the RX-8 along with any other ideas or concerns about children and the rx-8. there are some other threads here and there about these issues but i would like to see there be just one that everyone can look to for a quick guide..

i know some people get this car thinking that they can have it as a family car too.. and you can! but...they don't know which ones to get that will fit/look nice..be safe..etc..

let's get a good list going and keep the chatter to a min please. just pics/prices/direct links/ideas and concerns. Hopefully this will help alot of people out and cut down on time in searches..

I have a 4 year old and a seven year old...they use a car seat and a booster seat. They work fine. The newer xar seat has the fasteners that can use the hidden anchors in the back seat. The only thing I have to police the kids about is not crwaling over the console.

 

There was a pic awhile back where someone had a car seat to match their red/black leather interior. Looked good. I will take a pic later today of mine.

Perhaps MNAO has a list of good child seats to use with the 8? I know that the Japanese mazda japan sells certain car/booster seats for the 8 as options

My daughter loves riding in the 8, and she's only a year old. When we switched her to a forward facing seat, she's always leaning to the side to see around the front seat to look out the front window.

She only got really mad when I told her she couldn't drive.


(she's 9 months in that shot).

Here's a shot of the seat we use, but in the back of my wife's VW Golf. It fits perfectly in the 8.

 

We have used both our Britax Marathon and Graco ComfortSport carseats in the 8 -- they fit well in both forward-facing and rear-facing configuration. We have a Maclaren stroller that fits easily into the trunk when folded.

The only negative factor I have experienced on the 8 with my daughter (16 months) is that she tends to occasionally get the gray cloth panel in the rear door dirty. I plan to reupholster in leather + suede (all leather rear just for that reason) so it's not a big issue for me.

I've had no problems with Britax Roundabouts forward or rear facing. There was a guy I met last fall that was telling me that he's had trouble with booster seats where you start using the seat belt to actually restrain the children. The problem, as he described it, was that there wasn't enough room between the console and booster seat to get the seatbelt around and buckled properly. I haven't had to deal with it yet since my children are still too small for boosters...

 

Ya, its a bit of a pain...my wife hates it. (another reason why she drives the van )

Its tight, but I found that after a week I got the technique down and its easy to do up. My daughter has troubles doing it up but no trouble un-doing the belt.

 

I took my nephew in the back once and he uses a booster seat the kind where you use the seatbelt. It was harder to buckle, and his seat was a little too wide so he had a slight gangsta lean towards the center of the car. We only went 1/2 mile so I thought it was okay. I am sure they come narrower, his had these pullout cup holder things that seemed to make it extra wide.

okay, I'll bite.

No issues with an infant seat (that clips into a base) a while back. McLaren Techno fits in the trunk fine.

We have a britx roundabout that fite rear-facing, but I wouldn't want to sit in front of it. Front-facing should be fine, but the monkey's not big enough yet.

And she seems to love the car. :p

 

My daughter is 9, so we're way past the car seat thing. But we had another pleasant surprise. Where she tends to start getting a little car sick at 30 min in the previous car, in the back of my 8 she actually falls asleep. She says the seat belt is in a much more comfortable position for someone her age (lower on the hips) and the seats are much better too. But her number one favorite thing about the 8 is that it has cup holders in the back!

 

Advice for infant seat owners:
With any infant car seat, you are usually able to remove the Base, the part that the actual seat sits on. The base allows the seat to recline or sit straight up. Take the base OFF! It is easy to do, and makes all infant seats fit better in the 8.

Britax star riser comfy is a narrow booster seat that fits perfectly. Any Euro booster seat is going to be narrower and fit better than a U.S. "please pass the potatoes" one.

 

My kids love riding in the back. They are ages 13, 12, and 4. They feel like they're riding in a jet fighter. My youngest likes the little windows in the back. He says they're little like him.

 

This is good info! Have a daughter due in June and looks like getting an 8 is coming closer to reality.

Hey G8rboy, what make/model is that black leather seat and do you have any problems with it?

 

My kids 3 and 5 LOVE the 8, My 5 year old daughter always tells me to "Light em' up Daddy"

i have seen that the pego perego "aria" fits in the trunk quite well.. this is the only one i have found.. and there are two posts on here about Maclaren... are there any other strollers (that can have a car seat put in them) that can fold up and fit into the trunk?

Great posts on the booster/child steat issue, but I'm still looking for a decent booster seat which my daughter can buckle herself into. She's 7 and is exempt from the requirement to use a booster, but she gets pretty upset because I'm having all the fun up front and she can hardly see out of the windows.
Any ideas/experience on what really works? Anyone know if Mazda offers a seat belt buckle extender? These used to be around for really BIG folks. I suspect it would work great in my situation. The booster she uses in our truck seats fine, but you can't get the bloody seat belt buckled when she's in the seat.
Ideas? Yes it can be a marginally practical 'family' sports car!

 

The problem I'm having with the booster (seat bottom only) is the width in the back. It straddles the side padding and we can almost never reach the seatbelt receptacle. I haven't found a narrower, backless seat that fits between the cushions. I'm going to try cutting down the sides of our Cosco & see if that helps.

 

I have an RX-8 with a Graco Snugride Infant Car Seat. I use it with a base on the passenger's side rear seat. I bolster the seat base with a foam wedge that makes it more level, because when the seat base is in the car alone, the tilt is a little severe, particularly for a young infant.

You need to recognize that the seat will be taking up a bit of space - make sure your passenger isn't too tall! Over 5'10" may have a problem.
