Neat new suspension by Bose

http://automobilemag.com/news/0410_bose/

There is a video on the page. Sounds interesting

Some info on Bose's website
http://qualitysound.bose.com/pg/lear..._challenge.jsp

The more I read, the more I think this is pretty remarkable.

There is a video on the bose website called demo course on the right hand side, it is perhaps the most impressive video.

I read about that several months ago. It's pretty cool to use EM to control damping and spring rates. I think this far precedes magneto-rheological fluid filled shocks.

Bose, the company that makes overrated speakers now makes suspensions? <gasp>

EDIT: after reading the article and watching that video, I'm not even angry...I'm actually impressed!

From one of the articles I read, it sounds like they might be on production cars within 5 years maybe. Thing is, they are probably going to sell the tech to one car company. As well, apparently any car these are equipped too will be $$$$$$$$$.

Of course I know that. And they're ALL midrange....weak highs and lows. Typical of overrated, muddy Bose speakers

The company was started by a Professor at MIT named Bose. He pours 100% of earnings back into the company. Apparently he and various ultra smart students had been working on this for over 20 years. The idea came up in one of his classes. They do a lot of different work apparently.

Behind it all is Dr. Bose's lifelong fascination with air and hydraulic suspensions, which grew from a Pontiac he bought in 1957, to a Citroen he bought in Paris in 1967, to finally formalizing suspension research at BOSE in 1980. "I gave that Citroen suspension system as a quiz in acoustics to my students," Dr. Bose says. "The same mathematic principles apply."

You will be surprised at what companies can do with their core competencies. If you think more broadly, many of the technologies developed at companies can have broad applications.

Well, when you think about it, the suspension is run by electronics, so it must consume energy from somewhere. Unfortunately, the 1st Law doesn't allow us to harness energy from nowhere, which doesn't explain Fullmetal Alchemist. I'm sure Bose is aware about this minor flaw, and hopefully they can build a suspension that doesn't absorb as much energy as it should.

Well duh :p
I just wondered if he read it somewhere. He said it consumes several horspower, not that he thinks it would.
Anyone know how much power caddies magnetic ride uses?

The article mentioned that the Bose suspension requires a secondary alternator. A small 60 amp alternator requires ~3hp to drive.

Hey cool, if it's made by Bose does that mean it feels like your shocks are made from defective kazoos (like their speakers)?

Bose is overated crap and has always been overated crap...
-their is a reason Bose has a nickname of Blose
-their is a reason their marketing/ad dept. has a bigger budget then R & D dept.

Most overated POS they sell...those mini-cube speakers, $1000 for 5 speakers the size of a jar of vaseline? spatially incompetent speakers
