Eh i just got the new shaneracing cold air intake and i was wondering if i should leave on the plastic Renesis hood over the engine, it dosnt have the two holes that the stock intake had for the cover to pop into place but it is still pretty secure while im driving. Should i leave it on? YeH or Neh? plus, should i go for sr's pulley kit, i need new mod after borla exhuast and sr intake

Question, if the new intake doesn't provide the 2 holes to secure the engine cover, then how does the cover stay down securely while you're driving? I think you need to take it off because its going to come loose and move about your engine bay sooner or later. The 2 holes the stock system provides allows the engine cover to fit snug and secure. Without the 2 holes, its just wedged between the chassis and the battery cover, and its going to come loose.

 

uhmmmmm the battery and tip of the cyclinder for the intake keep that sucker in place... for now

I am not familiar w/ SR. What peformance enhancements does this particular intake get you?

I have the SR Motorsports pullies, RE intake, SR Motorsports hi-flow cat, and RB Exhaust dynoed at about 185 whp. You would be lucky to get 2 hp from that intake, all intakes. Previous people who do have it did weigh it, and it was like 2 lbs. lighter than the stock box. I don't have the cover on my engine (have the MazdaSpeed Front Strut Bar on).

This is a half-truth. Yes, some people will be "lucky" to get a gain as big as 2 hp, but as stated on practically every aftermarket site, every RX8 is different. This is a quote from the RE site...

Before you Order: We have found that a minority of RX-8's do not like a higher flow intake. Even though all RX-8's are supposed to be the same from the factory but unfortunately, they are not. This has to do with the version of the ECU program and also the batch of the MAF sensor. To ensure that our intake system will work on your RX-8, please do a simple test by removing the stock air filter from the stock air box and run your car from 1st to 3rd gear in full throttle and see if there is any kind of hesitation. Without the stock air filter in place, the stock intake system simulates a higher flow intake. If there is hesitation, any aftermarket high flow intake system will not work on your car, including ours. If there is not any hesitation and the car accelerates smoothly, you will see the promised HP gain from our intake system.

HP Rating: We have found that the 238 HP version RX-8 stock HP rating varies from 168 rwhp to 187 rwhp. Mazda has reflashed the ECU several times and the HP rating variance has something to do with the ECU program. We have found the first batch of RX-8 produced the most HP on the dyno. The recent batches have on average of 170 rwhp. Regardless of the base HP, the intake produces almost the same kind of HP gain at 8-12 rwhp at high rpm.


... end quote. Even on the SRMotorsports site, they are not claiming that you will gain 30-40 hp with thier stuff, they are claiming (and showing dyno's) from their own vehicle. Gains will differ from 8 to 8, the only way to find out what YOU will get is to install the parts on YOUR vehicle, and then have it dynoed. Always have your vehicle dynoed BEFORE installing aftermarket parts as well so you can actually see what change you get.

I agree with the previous posts... As for your next upgrade I would NOT choose to install aftermarket pulleys as they really don´t do much. They are a good choice if you drive your car really hard and the engine tend to overheat. Then the coolingpulley can be exchanged for a bigger one and resulting in better cooling...
First I would look at the CZ unit... then the flywheel could be a good choice for upgrading to a lighter one.

I don't believe the 12 hp the SR is claiming for the pullies, or the 8 hp that the intake manufacturers are claiming for the intake. And I have them on my car. A few here, a few there. Take a look at the thread and it is somewhat proven that these additions while giving decent high end hp, will not give the 8-10 hp that all the manufacturer's claim (except RB).

 

isnt it true that if you go for a lightened flywheel then you loose torque, i mean the 8 already has low torque so why would you change to a lighter flywheel

The loss of torque is marginal. You put on a lightened flywheel so the engine revs faster. I know with mine right now revving up in 1st, 2nd, & 3rd is quite a bit quicker. With this car you need the revs to get the power.
