Fog lights are dumb!

I have looked at pics that show an 8 sitting there sporting fog lights only. i have to turn on my xenons to get my fog lights to work which basically eliminates the purpose of them. can anyone tell me how to get my fog lights to turn on with just my parking lights or maybe even alone?

Most stock fog lamps are worthless. It doesn't matter whether the headlights are on or not, as what you want to do is illuminate the road close to the car, theoretically underneath where the fog hovers a foot or so off the ground.

I have PIAA yellow fogs on my car, and they are lifesavers in inclement weather, rain, snow, fog, whatever. If you want effective fog lights, get a set of quality aftermarket lamps with some real candlepower.

I had piaa 1500xts on my other car. What piaa's on your MP3?

Anyone change their fogs? Or just the bulbs? Search is bringing up old stuff.

the old stuff is the same stuff...swap your factory bulbs with H11 55w yellows for the best performance for stock conditions or upgrade the wiring harness to handle 80w bulbs

if you want styling and decent performance go with Super White bulbs

the Fogs are great in bad weather and mine turn on when the parking lights are on...so I'm not sure what you are talking about

Definitely go with the DIY on this for daytime control...that is my plan...one thing to note...the newer brighter white Halogens burn out MUCH quicker then standard Halogens

ie 100hours Superwhite, 2000hours standard...huge difference

Anyone upgrade to HIDs for their fogs?

Fog lights are great. I turn them on and people know I'm not a cop. Other people turn them on and I know they are not cops. When you're driving above the posted limit at night and a car appears in your rearview, fog lights means you don't have to slow down wondering if they're a cop. I think everyone should have and use fog lights. Except cops.

Fog lights are for fog! It should not be turned on unless there is fog. Aftermarket fog lights are the most annoying and dangerous because you are blinding other drivers out there. Stock fog lights are just fine, I use them so other people can see me in the fog... that's their only intent and purpose!

I have the 520 series Fog, with yellow bulbs- great in rain or just for fill on dark roads. These are large lamps that fit into the MP3's stock air dam perfectly, so they do cast a lot of light- the larger the reflector area the more spread you get.

Nice to have this time of year.

Not true, especially if you are using REAL fog lamps mounted properly below headlamp level.

The purpose of fog lamps is to position the lamp as far from the eye as possible to maximize the angle between your line of sight and the light beam. This, along with a proper cutoff beam pattern, minimizes the amount of light reflected back into your eyes from the water droplets ("backscatter"). You can verify this for yourself with a good strong flashlight in the fog. Point the flashlight straight ahead. Now keeping the same target, move the lamp next to your head. Notice how much light is reflected back at your eyes by the fog. Now move the light as far away from your head as your arm will reach, maintaining the target. See the difference. Since the goal is to minimize the backscatter, more power is not necessarily better.

Along with Nubo's comments, certain wavelengths and associated colors of light not only have different perceived reflected characteristics, but act to illuminate the road beyond in different ways, hence the tendency toward yellow fog lamps for white and yellow contrast versus blue, which serves less well.

Just my $0.02 from Physics II (like 20 years ago...ugh...).

I'll never buy amber/yellow coloured fog lights...I heard it explained (in Car and Driver? It's been awhile) - if you want to 'be seen' - use Yellow driving lights. If you want to 'See' - use clear.
