RX-8 vs my other choices spreadsheet

As I promised…

I thought I would share my spreadsheet with everyone, if for nothing else other than a laugh, but this is how I tried to figure out which car to buy early next year.

Note:

Fuel economy is not based on city/highway mpg. It’s actually based on what I would expect from the type of engine. The GTO’s 29 mpg highway is great for a 5.7L V8 while the 1.3L rotary (while I really did not have much to compare it to) I thought would get good mpg but really only gets fair for the size of the engine.

REMINDER: The rankings are based on my personal opinion and are subject to change.

Well, I hope you find some use out of it…and at least a laugh or two…

Wink

Funny thing, my wife uses this same system to figure out when I am going to get a massage with a happy ending.

Wow, talk about ****...and don't quality and durability kind of go hand in hand? If something is high quality then it is most likely durable and vice versa? You have the RX-8 as the highest quality, but the least durable...how is that as none of them have been out more than 2 years? I hope you don't base it on what you read in the forums here because if you read the S2K forums they can sound just as bad.

Anyways, from all your choices I can't even tell what you're looking for in a car. You have everything from a Scion Tc to a 4 door G35. So, price isn't really a factor. You have a camaro, mustang, and neon...so exclusivesness, resale, and a fun car to drive aren't issues. You have the EVO, so you don't care about a warranty that will actually be backed by the manufcaturer. Gas mileage is out the window with the RX-8...

So, what are you looking for?

wow...no offense...but you put the SRT-4 as the worst value out of all the vehicles...to me, a <$20k car with that kind of power, that beats an STI and EVO 8 (granted not overall or on a track) should be the best value. Just a thought. (granted its still a neon, but come on, give dodge some credit)

It's hard to tell what he means...If he means value when purchased and sold, then it's right on. Those suckers lose 50% of their value in 2 years...

Gosh, don’t be so harsh…I said this was something to laugh about. I made the spreadsheet when I was WAY bored but I still found it helpful. I love cars and unlike some people, I can see the good in just about any car. This will be my first newISH car (EVER) and I’m taking the decision very seriously. Furthermore, the money I’m going to be spending is not something I take lightly. So when you keep going back and forth…back and forth, like I do all the time, then I need something like this to bring it into perspective for me.

In regards to quality, I’m talking about quality of workmanship while durability I’m talking about the engines durability. I don’t really know too much about rotaries and while in theory they have less moving parts it seems that their history has been a little spotty. I think the 8’s rotary is great but that’s the score I gave it.

EVERYTHING, ALL SCORES…are subject to change….REMEMBER THAT

Anyways, from all your choices I can't even tell what you're looking for in a car.
RWD, FUN, QUICK to FAST, family friendly (for a sports car) and good quality so it will last me 7-10 years.

You have everything from a Scion Tc…
My last choice, this is basically a throw in towel car. I think it looks nice but FWD and only 160HP is a turn off.

…the to a 4 door G35…
A real nice sports sadan we all have to admit, but most likely not going to a choice.

So, price isn't really a factor.
Are you nuts, heck yeah it is…but remember that I’m buying slightly used and I’m willing to at least give these cars a chance.

wow...no offense...but you put the SRT-4 as the worst value out of all the vehicles...to me, a <$20k car with that kind of power, that beats an STI and EVO 8 (granted not overall or on a track) should be the best value. Just a thought. (granted its still a neon, but come on, give dodge some credit)

Again, right on…that’s what I’m saying…

Note: I love Dodge, the Viper is the car that made me a car guy back in high school. But, a Neon is not the best quality car…SRT-4 is a heck of a bang for the buck, but it’s value/quality is not really good. Forgive me if this is not the best spreadsheet, but again…I was board and it was done rather quickly…

Nice spreadsheet!
Heck, and to think... I just wrote down Pros and Cons!

I’m glad someone likes it, I hope it might be helpful…but if you just laughed, it was enough for me.

Are you nuts? Have you even tried to research what a 2003 G35 is going for? The car is holding it’s value like crazy and it’s one reason why it will most likely not be the car I end up with. I’m not sure about the other models, but the G35 is holding it’s price really well. It actually was selected (along with the 8) as cars that are keeping their resale value the best.

Thanks guys!

You know we've all tried to give you good advice in previous posts, but since you're not going to buy ANY car until next spring at the earliest, why not just keep us in suspense and let your next post be when you announce to the world what car you have bought!

No they don't, they're holding their value quite well and are pretty difficult to come by used (the Neon is pretty bad though). In addition the G35C is rated as having the highest resale value in its class and in any class for that matter by many publications. In general Infinitis are among the best when it comes to holding their resale well. Mazda is one of the worst among Japanese brands (though the Miata and RX-8 are pretty good) and it's usually Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and their luxury brands dominating lists, in addition to other luxury brands.

If you are interested in comparing the RX-8 with the GTO you might like to post a query on the Australian forum. There are some RX-8 owners there who have previously owned performance variants of Holden's Commodore. The Holden Monaro ( which for all practical purposes is identical to your GTO) is essentially a 2 door version of the performance 4 door Commodore. It's a decent car in its own right, but probably as different from an RX-8 in design, execution and driving as it is possible to be!

I can attest to what RX8wannahave already said. I've seen several mag's that rate the G-35 (and I think some of the other Infiniti makes) among the highest in retaining value. And, again, I've seen the 8 on those lists, only SLIGHTLY below the G35 (in one list, it was .1 lower).

You haven't actually driven all these cars have you? Looking at your numbers a few things stand out, you rate the RX-8 as having better handling than the Evo and STi. You also give the Evo more points for ride quality than the STi when the Evo is super stiff and rough compared to the STi, the interior as well gets more points than the STi when the STi is clearly a step up in quality, especially the MY05. It's interesting to see someones evaluation of all those cars none the less, just pointing out a few things I felt were a bit off.

I guess I should rephrase because some people don't understand that prices differ around this country of ours ...

Here in Utah near where I live, an SRT-4 is not hard to come by and are depreciating about 50% in 2 years.

Gosh, don’t be so harsh…I said this was something to laugh about.
Sorry, I wasn't trying to be. I actually found this to be very amusing...I was just trying to help in your car quest .

Ouch baby...real ouch...

I thought I had the freedom to write threads? I did not expect that from you grapes...ouch...

I shared that spreadsheet because I said in another post I would...that's all, for ***** and giggles you know....

I can’t say enough that I'm almost positive the 8 will be the car I pick, since I love it very much (just ask my wife who is getting jealous ALREADY). I can't wait to post...

"I gotz the 8, here are some pic's"

Ouch baby...but I thought I would share.

I looked at alot of different cars and I'm only sharing....

No, I have not...so I know some of those numbers might be off a bit, maybe more with some of them...got me there. But, it was my opinion based on what I have read.

also give the Evo more points for ride quality than the STi when the Evo is super stiff and rough compared to the STi, the interior as well gets more points than the STi when the STi is clearly a step up in quality, especially the MY05.
I agree, I remember reading that, I guess my numbers will be updated.

It's interesting to see someones evaluation of all those cars none the less, just pointing out a few things I felt were a bit off.
Your right, and I'm probably off with each car...at least a bit...

I make these stupid spreadsheets all the time to decide stuff like where to do my residency, cars, skis, job, etc. and then I always go with my gut. After I tweak the spreadsheet to match, of course.
Just drive 'em. You'll know what to do.
