When do you change the engine oil first?
I think now finished break-in. My mileage is around 900.

 

Thats when I did my first change. Save some trouble and let the dealer do it as the oil filter is on very tight.

 

I've heard there are two kind (or more) of engine oil. do you think which one is best for 8?

 

i f-ed my oil pan up tryin to change it put a hole in it

 

Don't poke a hole in your pan :-)

I use 5-20 oil as recommended in the manual, my dealer used to put in whatever they had at hand. Hope it was not olive oil.

 

i did mine at 1000, dealer did it, didnt take a look at it. I did my own at 5000, and the oil looked so black. then again, i didnt change it for 6 months also, darn my laziness. But the car is really easy to change, just make sure u have a filter wrench, did wonders

Change it now. Have the dealer do it. Then change it every 3k. Use the Mazda recommended oil only. The benefit of taking it into the dealer is they will also perform any and all TSB's on your car during the service.

The owner's manual states that oil change is due at 7,500 miles and no special "break in" required. This engine only has 3 moving parts and a tranny. On top of that you replace 30% of the (changeable) oil every 3,000 miles.

More frequent oil changes are only needed under racing conditions.

There is no special oil. Special oil is only needed under racing conditions.

Frequent oil changes and "special" oil is a marketing ploy for the oil companies to get even more of your money.

 

My dealer offers a free change at 1500, which I scheduled for Saturday. I'm a bit late, since I hit 1500 yesterday. Oh well, it's better than 7500!

Just to give a dealer something other than a slam, I asked the service writer on the phone what oil they use for RX-8's. "5W-20", he said, right off the top of his head. With luck they won't overfill it or break something!

 

I did mine at 1800 miles, and yes, 5W 20
