I'm planning on attending Drift Day on the 31st, and I was just curious as to how much headroom an average approved helmet robs? Is it significantly more then a bike helmet? (Dont laugh, but I tried driving around with a bike helmet on to test the headroom and it was totally comfortable). I just want to make sure that headroom will be alright before I order a helmet.

 

I don't own my own, but thinking about it logically...: I bet that if you have a friend with a motorcycle helmet it might be a better representation of the size of an auto helmet (closer than a bike helmet anyway). Your other option might be to try a local go-kart track, maybe they'll let you take one to the parking lot to try it out for fit.

I haven't started racing yet, but I have heard about an autox in my area and am looking into getting involved. So I hope someone who ownes a helmet posts, I'd also be interested in what they have to say.

 

Do you have any contacts with a local chapter of the SCCA? I'd be willing to bet that you could find someone there who'd be willing to let you try a helmet...and who knows? You might even be able to find someone who has a spare to sell!

Why? Even if it completely sucks (and if you have a moonroof it probably will) you still need to wear an approved helmet.

First off, I am not disputing the fact that an approved helmet is required, nor do i disagree with such a regulation. If you honestly care to know the motivation behind asking my question, it is because I would feel more comfortable shelling out 200+ bucks for an approved helmet, If i know that I would be able to fit in my car with it on.

Now does anyone have an estimate as to how much headroom an approved helmet would use?

 

Helmets are fairly standard in size; what can vary is how much padding is put in to fit a given size head. Figure 1-2".

My question is based on the fact that regardless whether you feel more comfortable or not, you still need to buy/wear a helmet. I'm 5'6" and with moonroof have to make compromises in seating position in order to minimize bumping. That's minimize--I still hit the roof after making adjustments. It sucks but there it is.

Yeah thats why I was concerned, I also have the moonroof, i'm about 6" flat, and I seemed to fit fine with the bike helmet, (~1.5") and I had an easy inch to spare. So I was just hoping that it would be at least Feasable with an approved helmet. I am willing to make the seating compromises, so I figure 1-2" should be ample. Thanks for the info.

If you can fit wearing a bike helmet then I strongly suspect your seat back is reclined too far. Proper seating position is the seat positioned so there is a slight bend in your knee when the clutch/brake are fully depressed. After setting that you then adjust the seat back so both wrists touch the top of the steering wheel when the arms are fully outstretched.

Oddly enough that is exactly how I adjusted it when I drove, and I was totally comfortable. I attribute it partly to the face that I do not have a long torso. Also, do you have any recomendations for some reasonably priced helmets? My primary concern would be weight simply for neck comfort. Also do you suggest getting a shield or an open face? ( I like the idea of a tinted shield to help keep out the sun, but otherwise I would just wear sunglasses with an open faced helmet).

By the way, is there anyone else on the forum that is planning to attend Drift Day on the 31st in Fontana?

Bieffe makes an open face called the Integral GT but it's hard to find.

Bell's Mag 4 is a nice open face that runs about $210.
